I do not think Newcastle represents a credible threat in the transfer window this season for Manchester United. If they play their cards right, maybe in the next 2 - 3 seasons.

Newcastle are not in Europe. They do not have the prestige of the more established European giants nor the reputation. They do not have the global platform that United have. All they have now are very rich owners in their first season.
A lot of good players aren't willing to gamble their careers for money. Money that they can get, maybe a few pennies less, somewhere else. An argument can be made for players who DO want the money and are willing to come to an unknown club project. Think Robinho who traded Real Madrid for City. Footballing wise, it did not do much for his career. But he did make a lot of money.

It was not until City became a credible threat to the PL title that they began attracting top tier players.

So I think Newcastle will have to recruit very differently from United this window to build a solid squad, not a world beating one. Our very own Jesse Lingard wanted 150k per week from Newcastle thinking they'd just trump up the cash and they withdrew from negotiations. That's why Jesse is now in talks with West Ham.

might not be a direct competitor per se. but i believe they can disrupt the transfer plans. a 30m player can be jacked up to 60m by the parent club if say newcastle also joined the party
