dun blame penjajah. we no longer build big ships because of the law of diminishing returns. at a certain stage, it's just plain dumb to keep building bigger version of things. the only thing it achieves is stroking the e-penor of the architect and builder

QUOTE(mrg220t @ Mar 4 2022, 10:07 PM) If Melaka so powerful why have to pay tribute to China? Sorry necro thread.Oh wait, is it not tribute but actually derma? Melaka too rich and China is poor so they every year give them money as derma? Watched this video on YouTube. Interesting to know Melaka's ufti doesn't include military protection. |

didnt think it was true but seems to be corroborated by AI:
"Yes, historical accounts indicate that Malay jongs were notably very big, often described by European and Chinese chroniclers as being larger than the European ships of their time. Size and Specifications Tonnage: The average deadweight tonnage during the Majapahit era ranged from 1,200 to 1,400 tons, with some larger vessels reaching up to 2,000 tons. For comparison, the largest Portuguese ships of the era, such as the Flor do Mar, were around 400 tons. Dimensions: Estimates based on historical records suggest lengths of approximately 40-60 meters (around 130-200 feet), with the largest possibly exceeding 80 meters (over 260 feet). Construction: Jongs were massively built with four-layered planking, making their hulls resilient to cannon fire from smaller Portuguese ships. They featured advanced construction techniques like bulkheads (watertight compartments) and were built with tropical hardwoods. Capacity: They were designed as large cargo and passenger vessels, capable of carrying hundreds of people and substantial amounts of goods for long-distance trade across the Indian Ocean and beyond. Historical Context European Accounts: Early European visitors, like the Portuguese, were highly impressed by their size. Alfonso de Albuquerque reportedly referred to the Malay ships or galleys (ghalis) as "World Shakers". Reports mention that the deck of a jong was higher than the tall aft-castle of a Portuguese ship. Origin: The term "jong" or "jung" is of Javanese origin and these ships were widely used by various seafaring ethnic groups in the Southeast Asian archipelago, including the Malays. Influence: Some scholars argue that the impressive size and advanced design of the jong, particularly the balance-lug sail, influenced European ship designs during the Age of Exploration." |

QUOTE(Randomization @ Mar 4 2022, 05:07 PM) In 1575 siege, Aceh used 40 two-masted galleys with Turkish captains carrying 200–300 soldier of Turk, Arab, Deccanis, and Aceh origins. The state galleys (ghorab istana) of Aceh, Daya, and Pedir is said to carry 10 meriam, 50 lela, and 120 cecorong (not counting the ispinggar). Smaller galley carry 5 meriam, 20 lela, and 50 cecorong.[11]: 165 Western and native sources mention that Aceh had 100–120 galleys at any time (not counting the smaller fusta and galiot), spread from Daya (west coast) to Pedir (east coast). One galley captured by Portuguese in 1629 during Iskandar Muda's reign is very large, and it was reported there were total 47 of them. She reached 100 m in length and 17 m in breadth, had 3 masts with square sails and topsails, propelled by 35 oars on each side and able to carry 700 men. It is armed with 98 guns: 18 large cannon (five 55-pounders at the bow, one 25-pounder at the stern, the rest were 17 and 18-pounders), 80 falcons, and many swivel guns. The ship is called "Espanto do Mundo" (terror of the universe), which probably a free translation from Cakradonya (Cakra Dunia). The Portuguese reported that it was bigger than anything ever built in the Christian world, and that its castle could compete with that of galleons kantoiiiiiAceh punya, sibuk nak claim. |

QUOTE(narf03 @ Mar 4 2022, 05:12 PM) dont get the logic, tanah melayu was a small place, compare to all other nations, which is like few hundred times bigger, so those nations can use small ships while TM need to use big ass ship ? Because of trading. Just like now cargo ship generally bigger than warships/patrol ship but they have less combat power. That’s why even Portuguese ship smaller but wins. And the articles twisted the facts 7 layer masts ship actually refers to Zheng He treasure ships. Jong is big but compare to Chinese naval = mid size level. But yeah these ppl like to mix facts with mythology them combine malay becum invincible |
