Hi all, I have a room, now currently using stand fan and table fan only.

I am thinking to mount a ceiling fan. Last time a contractor told me that there's a huge space between my ceiling and the penthouse above. A space enough for a grown adult man to stand and walk without needing to hunch. If i want to mount a fan, i would need to install some sort of solid wood on my ceiling to support the fan. And there will be a problem of getting this piece of wood into the lift because the length is quite long?

Problem is, how are they going to carry this piece of long wood up the lift? Or are there any other solutions? Or should i just stick to stand fan and table fan? Or wall fan would be good?

If they say need a wood beam, then it depends on what structure they have up upon the ceiling. The wood no need to be big or too long. My house probably has 2x2" (?) and about 1m long to be supported by ceiling frame. Ceiling fan is not that heavy.

just a simple plaster ceiling.
The plaster is starting to crack so i wanna get somebody to replace it soon unless it falls on my head. so at the same time i wanna fix the ceiling fan also. But there's a huge empty space between the plaster ceiling and the unit above me.

Customised a long 'J' bracket holder from grille maker to attached to the concrete ceiling.

To do the work, need to bring in scaffolding.

May have to remove plaster ceiling.

Attached Image

Other methods dont work if no existing roof wooden truss. Whatever wood also need to attached to the ceiling for support.

i think the metal will be very long to actually fix into the next concrete ceiling.

It can be done. Is matter of cost only.

You also need to pull new wiring for the fan as well.

They can mount it horizontally to the sides (walls) with L brackets and lag bolts.

If its under 14 feet you can get a single plank 2x4
Weight : 1.71KG per Feet.
https://www.kayu.my/products/balau-solid-wo...-4-2-to-16ft--1
Its pretty sturdy enough to carry a 6kg point load (i.e. your ceiling fan).

If its a very long section (dunno how big your room is), may want to consider 2x6
Wood plank 2x6 is Weight : 2.57KG per Feet.
Comes in up to 20ft lengths. https://www.kayu.my/products/balau-solid-wo...-x-6-2-to-20ft-

Its not terribly BULKY like a sofa. So still manageable. But extra hauling cost if need to use the stairs lah.
And the wall supports need to be bulletproof (safety factor).. most likely they'll make it out of similar 2x4 short lengths and anchored to the wall.
There is still an inherent risk of having a heavy beam on top of the ceiling...

-----------

It would be much less complex to just go for a wall fan like KDK KC-4GR. This model very good "tubular" airflow.
Ceiling fans, TBH, just blow the hot air downwards.. whistling.gif

Plus much easier to clean smaller fan than ceiling fans. Being at a lower height you will eliminate disco light problems with ceiling fans placed too near to a ceiling light.

They wont' use the stairs cause it's more 40 floors. ho ho ho.
I do have a plug for wall fan. I just removed it last time cause being OCD, i cannot stand having the fan so dusty on top. Maybe i will put it back. xD

Talk to your installer whether the wood need to be in a single piece? Any possibility to get the wood in smaller pieces & joint it back via mechanical screws / nails?

The stretcher lift car size normally is 2.4m height, you should be able to transport 3~4 meter wood in slanted position without any problem.

This strikes me as strange. In a condo, where space is a premium, there is such a large unused space? As the developer, I would have integrated that space into the penthouse above, and charged a premium since the floor space for the unit above is larger. I urge you to double check what your contractor has told you.

Maybe what the contractor said is true exactly above the place you want to mount the fan, but the entire space is only 2 m wide. (just speculating on the possibility) In that case you only need a wood support piece that is 2 m long, as you can mount it wall-to-wall instead of top-to-bottom.

A suggestion - since you are going to redo the plaster ceiling, why not see if you can make it into usable space? I see lots of people making a "mezzanine" of sorts in their house above the staircase to regain some usable space. You could do something similar if the space is as big as the contractor has said.

Yes there’s a large space between my unit and the penthouse because each of the penthouses here have private swimming pools in their own units. So they need to accommodate that depth of the pool.

And I don’t think you can just make use of the space like that, it’s a condo after all. Not landed property.

Better dont do any drilling to the wall, else the pool water may leak to your unit.

Great! Since you already know what you can and can't do, wish you all the best implementing it!
