my friend invited me to contribute to his open source project and i am really excited because i get to work with some of the pros (just looking at their resume gives me imposter syndrome) its an android project, built using java. i have no problem with java the language itself. but setting up android studio gave me a lot of grief. i still cant get the AVD working yet and then i get hit in the face with gradle and stuff. i can grind through this slowly and painfully just like i did with everything else but i prefer to fast track my learning. Are there any android experts here willing to help me out?

I suggest be refrain from jumping into coding directly. Instead, start by reading the basic concepts in mobile app development. Android's official website for developer has these resources. Once you have the basic idea, setting up AVD should be easy, it has been simplified a lot comparing to the past.
