Here is a game we can play. McT is playing CDM. When we are building from the back, count the number of times McTominay receives a pass from the CBs (either Maguire or Lindelof). See what number you get.

Unless it happened during my toilet break, the number is zero in the first half.

Looks like McT is playing as a pure destroyer role for his physicality. I think RR also takes into account his lack of passing range and the Leeds pressing.
So it looks instructional that the system is bypassing McT when building. With Leeds high pressing, RR does not want to lose the ball in that central area. This denies Leeds one of their weapons on the attacking transition.

See McT losing the ball at the start of the second half and it almost resulted in a goal. It's the system which we want to deny Leeds a turnover in a central area.

Pogba is immense this game.

This is a fluke goal. Shit happens.

I literally just posted that United were trying not to lose possession in a central area. And that is exactly what happened for the second goal.

My personal thoughts on this is that it is instructional.
When out of possession for a Leeds goal kick, we look to be forming a loose 4-4-2 formation. Bruno will push up almost parallel to Ronaldo to pressure their two CBs. This is to try negate the forward passing from the CBs and force the ball out wide as compared to through the middle.

And talking about instructions, we had a different tweak at the back in light of Leed's constant high press. Maguire & Lindelof I suspect also had instructions to move forward into midfield to overload the central areas when the opportunity arises.

I think the point there is that United always had a policy to promoting youth players.
But we don't treat them like stars. Even during Sir Alex, there were youth who shone bright but never really made it. I remember Macheda's debut against Villa as an example.

The difference here is that the senior players aren't up to scratch to provide the platform whereas during Sir Alex, seniors could always be counted to stablize the team with youth on the pitch.

It's not about the fans being right.
It's about Rangnick actually being able to drop both which is amazing. I suppose he had to keep ONE English out there which is why AWB gets the nod.
