So I have been having this iPad pro '18 11in for almost 2 years with 512gb storage...
I use it for note taking at work, microsoft team, outlook, watching video, editing video from my insta360 and gopro
Editing photo from my dslr... playing game... listening to apple music... watching youtube
and everything.. you name it...

I'm very deep into apple eco system... mac m1, old iMac, iphone 13 pro, AW7, airpod pro,
appletv, homepod and very long list... recently into homekit...

So here my dilemma... my iPad pro develop a problem and no more warranty... parts of the
screen are no longer responsive... note taking is no longer possible with apple pencil...there are
2 stripes about 1 cm wide that are not responsive to touch....

I did inquire about repair cost... screen replacement almost RM2k... and I'm considering options

Repair the ipad pro or buying new ipad air or the new ipad mini but too many things to consider...

the old ipad pro is nice screen... 120Hz.. watching youtube and playing games is nice... can you notice the difference on
60Hz screen???

Limitation of storage on the ipad air and mini.... my old ipad pro has 512gb.. even though I haven't cross 200gb yet... I
subscribe to apple 2TB icloud...

[COLOR=red]Processor..
I notice that my old iPad pro only using A12Z or something... the air and even the mini are using A15...

Budget... Hmm.. I'm willing to spend 3k..

So need opinion... from all otai2 apple user here... help for the insight really appreciated.

Thanks

You have to ask APPLE store itself. But dont expect much return.

you can refer instacash for the trade in since switch also use this platform. but i think the trade in value for ipad is not high. id rather repair it since rm2k cant get a tablet as good as your current ipad pro. Given that you repair in authorized service center.

Yes.. I think so. But looking at the processor maybe will be outdated soon... and current processor maybe much better... Any way just looking at options
and weighing at which is the best route to choose...

I had a similar issue with my iPad Pro 9.7". Battery died and repair/replacement cost is just too much. I've been using it constantly for online meetings so it might have stressed the battery a lot as well.

In contrast, I also have an iPad 3 which is still working fine with good battery life. The newer models don't seem to last very long, and no battery replacement policy (battery replacement basically is whole unit replacement) means it is not worth repairing.

It pretty much depends on your use case. If you are not doing any graphics design then I think even the latest low-end iPad should be more than enough. It might be more worth it to save the money and spend it on a set of BT speakers if you want to have stereo sound.

Well to be honest... I'm a 54 year old person who among other things like technical stuffs... like apple stuffs unlike most of my over 50 year old counter parts

Going to retire next year... and my intention is to take up some classes that require lotsa note taking. Then come lotsa hobbies like cycling, motorcycing and local travelling that may put my existing dslr, gopro and insta360 working and producing video and photo that require little bit of editing for my own
amusement... Now my tendency is more towards latest ipad mini due to portability and better processor.

I do have a original homepod for my speaker. I love it

Notetaking is fine with the low end iPad, it uses the Gen 1 Apple Pencil though.
As for the video and graphics editing, I guess having a higher end iPad would be necessary.
However, given that video editing will use a lot of storage, I'm not sure that 256 GB would be sufficient for this use case.
I think using iPad as the primary video/graphics editor will be pushing the storage capacity.

I have not used the latest iPad Pro with USB-C, so I'm not sure if it will support exernal storage solutions. However, for your usecase I suspect you'd be better off with an iPad Pro with USB-C. Then you can also attach an external monitor to it.

The iPad Pro 3rd gen is still powerful to date, with very close performance to the latest m1 if you are using it for basic stuffs and not running high performance apps etc..I would suggest fixing if its not 2k, and I doubt AASP could offer you high trade in value if it needs 2k to repair, it must be something that degrades the trade in value.

Yes you can feel significant difference between the pro 120hz vs latest iPad mini 6 or the air 4, I have all 3 models at home (m1 11”/ mini6/ air4) and I can feel the huge difference, especially on games (honestly can even feel the difference from swiping up to kill apps, the air4 and mini6 just lags a little compare to the buttery smooth iPad pro (even 3rd gen 2018).

Back to your main question, I think the iPad pro and mini are both perfect for their purpose, for example if you are using it at home or office all the time and don’t need the portability, then go with the pro…iPad mini is only good for one thing which is the portability..it’s so good to the point that I uses it much more than my iPhone 13PM, easy to carry around, bigger battery, bigger screen, for surfing the web and YouTube or Netflix ?.and the iPad mini 6 is not cheap if you are getting the cellular model, it’s price is close to the base model WiFi m1 11” iPad Pro…

All in all, if you compare both the iPad Pro and mini side by side, the mini’s performance turns you off, screen/display not as crisp, speakers bass not as good etc…not as smooth and yes it lags sometimes even scrolling on safari..but those lag is more like sprite lags (not the kind of lag that you feel on a slow and under specced device)…test it out at the store side by side..and see which suits you better portability vs power

I have the same generation iPad Pro as well and if I were faced with the same situation, I would actually opt to get the new iPad Mini. After a while, I feel like even the 11" is a little hefty to be lugging around and the new Mini feels like a great machine for note taking and basic photo editing.

I think I have similar feeling with your opinion. I'm trying to connect with freelance ipad repairer. But location become a bit of an issue.
Also has doubt in my mind. You know something like, if you repair something, open it up and somehow later if unlucky, I will get another
problems not long after the repair.... But anyway will try to repair it first.

Yeah.. I'm really tempted to get the mini. If there is stock for 256gb, being a compulsive buyer myself, I'll be playing with it right now.
But really sayang my ipad pro 11. Watching video on it, is just magical... I play around with the mini in shops... don't like the screen
but I think I can live with it...

Same here for me! If I were to travel a bit whether it is for work where I need a laptop, I would definitely have the Mini in tow instead of the 11" iPad. If I were just to carry my iPad Pro then I would have a keyboard and a mouse for it.

It’s quite a common thing where sending to third party will lead you to more issues there after…but it’s all about going to the right repairer, technicians who know their job will likely fix it for you without issues, problem is not knowing who/where to go for these repairs..

Had the same heart breaking experience with my 2020 iPad Pro 11 - it just decided not to power on last week and remained dead ever since. Brought it to Apple’s authorised service centre and they certified it as dead as it won’t respond to the diagnostics software. Was also told they don’t repair iPads, only replace. The cost to replace mine would be RM2,600 (WiFi + Cellular, 256GB) and the replacement unit would come with 90 days warranty.

Anyways, considering it’s only a year and 7 months old, that’s very surprising. I’ve owned many Apple devices but never had one died on me before I sold it off to upgrade until now. I have a 2014 MacBook Air that’s still running fine and an iPad 4 which I passed to my brother that’s still working fine too. This explains why I didn’t purchase Apple Care for it when I should have, but as they say, hindsight is always 20/20.

Like you, I love my iPad Pro to bits as well… it’s my go to for emails (I have one of those Logitech keyboard case for that), it helped got me through my MBA course last year and it’s my nightly companion for binging Netflix and stuffs. So I’m torn now between paying the 2600 to get it replaced or buying a completely new one with another year warranty and this time I will add that damn Apple Care. The other consideration for me whether or not to splurge another 4k is that am not sure the iPad Pro will receive an update next year, since they were just updated this year. The 2021 11” vs the 2020 11” isn’t much of an upgrade if compared to the bigger sibling that got Mini LED. Might be worth waiting for a bit before deciding.

Anyways, am also deep into the Apple ecosystem although I do use Android phones every now and then. When it comes to my tablet though, it’s iPad or nothing biggrin.gif

I went to Alamanda today with my wife, son and daughters and son in law… just following wife doing her usual window shopping… while she was in parkson, I and my son in law went into switch. To my surprise, the shop got stock for 256gb one. So I bought it and playing with it now.

The size is nice… Still trying to get used to it…

As for my ipad pro.. still looking for a reliable place/person to repair it…
