This model proven to be another turning leaf of Proton I think. Well, at least since the Persona comes in sweat.gif
Actually I can say Proton had done a great job on their own. From what I observed on this Saga, it's nice biggrin.gif
Great headroom...nice meter cluster... decent design...but bad trims. I mean, they introduced 3 types of trimmings that shouldn't have been used at all. Let's not talk about the body colour front and rear bumpers and garnish... or the comfort seat fabric, keyless entry remote and airbags. However, why are people paying extra for the standard safety features which they can get on any cheap cars, such as rear passenger assist grips, alarm system, reverse sensor and seatbelt pretensioner???

my god doh.gif I know what I said might be flamed or whatever... but all those safety features should be embedded on all cars they manufacture.....sigh sad.gif

Incidentally, I asked Dato Syed Zainal whether we will see this same generation around in 2030 (and my son will say he remembered his father rushing to finish this report to meet the 5:30 pm deadline) and said 'Absolutely not!'. He said that at this time, model life cycles for Proton are planned for seven years at most and they will not keep a model in production for as long as before.

From this conversation, I hope they don't drag the model production anymore like what they done to old Wira and Saga...

This pic from the motortrader site makes the Saga look like a toy car hehe... those skinny wheels just ain't right. Oh well, after market mods I suppose.

But overall it's a good effort from Proton. They really have come out with something "new" this time round, instead of rehashing the old Wira/Iswara models over and over again.

The N-line is quite crap looking with the black bumpers and ugly rims. I wonder why local manufacturers love to do this. The entry level Vivas and even Kelisa have the same problem. Black bumpers make the car look unrefined and incomplete, as if the factory workers forgot to add on a part there.

Agree for both statement nonetheless. icon_rolleyes.gif
They shouldn't have done all these silly trimmings. It's like, you're buying a GunPla without decent decals or weapons. Need to add extra money for the optional things. sweat.gif

QUOTE(Chips Yap)
When asked about the 1.6-litre engine being fitted to the new Saga, Dato' Syed Zainal said that this is already under development but is intended for the taxi market. Discussions with taxi drivers showed that extra power is required but the engine will be tuned to run on NGV. Whether a non-NGV version will be sold to the general public will depend on demand.

For brakes, the new Saga gets ventilated discs in front and drum brakes at the rear. ABS is not available at this time, mainly for cost reasons, although it has not been ruled out in future. When asked why an airbag was provided in the top version and not ABS instead, the answer was that market surveys showed that Malaysian buyers were more keen on the airbag than ABS. This reflects the lack of understanding of both devices because ABS is something you will use almost everyday whereas an airbag is a 'one-time thing' - which you should hope you do not need to use.

I do hope they have a revised 1.6 version of this Saga with standard fitted common safety features in it. Proton rather follow the market demand flow than focus on the safety of the car. That's "clever"...

All in all, it's considered good for Proton to finally open the hood and see what's the world is now (considering they have been, not that now they aren't, under the hood of the government protection).

now only i realised there's a honeycomb web inside the air cond vent. sweat.gif

I still don't understand why they, because of wanted to attract more low-payed customer, willing to manufacture an Entry-level trimming which lacked all those fundamental safety features. Do they not think of the safety of the consumer??? Do they still have the mentality of way back then when the road ministry said "There's no need for airbags or ABS in Malaysia. Our road is safe."?! I'm okay with the Medium-Line, that's the only trim I like for this new Saga. Or maybe I'm wrong, for they wanna create a down-to-earth basic car with down-to-earth price which means we pay what we get.......I'm not asking them to include all those safety features in M-Line as standard in E-Line, but couldn't they just stop the production of E-Line? Just because of wanted to fight with Viva and MyVi in the market, they had not concern about consumer's safety. And hold on, maybe they're asking the consumer to get 3rd party accessories...... doh.gif

Gunpla Baseline model = MG Destiny normal version... Highline = MG Destiny EBM tongue.gif

Anyway, about the 1.6L engine for the Saga... hm, not sure whether it's a good idea or not. If the Saga gets an 1.6L surely the price will go up, maybe reaching the level of a Savvy. When that happens, the Savvy will truly be at a disadvantage, in fact it already has a smaller 1.2L engine.

Maybe this might mean future Savvy models will get a larger and more powerful engine. That'll be more suitable as the Savvy is being marketed as a hot hatch. More power will be welcome for any hot hatch.
*
Yeah haha...

Anyway, as that Dato' Syed Zainal said, no more proton to be use for more than 7years thingy thingy. Who knows in the future Savvy gets larger in size and stronger with larger engine capacity? icon_rolleyes.gif

Reading back of what i wrote earlier, a 1.6 Saga really breaks the tradition haha. They still have Persona, Gen 2 and Waja to think of. Thus, forget bout a consumer ver of Saga 1.6. Now, they should have a plan for the next car, either a MPV or design a new luxurious Perdana. What about Putra? Putra Neo brows.gif

To me, I still love Perdana V6 (before the newest face-lift) among all Proton cars.

H-Line for basic car like Saga? I don't reckon they'll release 1. However I might be wrong anyway whistling.gif

Bout extra gimmicks, let's see : Rear passenger power windows, driver windows control center, 1-touch central locking control (dunno what it's called), ABS, EBD, leather upholstery, pearl coating (joking), front passenger seat height adjuster and 17" alloy rims with larger wheels?

They need to stop production for the E-Line. Not that it's not worth buying, but it's not worth gambling your life in such a low safety featured car. sweat.gif

When, or rather if, they start manufacturing 1.6 for Saga, I guess it'll rob many sales from Persona, Gen 2, Satria or Waja. That's if, the consumer don't focus on the looks (which is rather rare).

QUOTE(Quasar @ Jan 19 2008, 01:25 AM)
I dun think it's possible to stop producing the E-Line at the moment, at least not for Malaysia income.

Since the Saga is meant to be a budget model, it is targeted at the low/mid income group. And not all those in this income bracket can afford RM100-150 extra each month (assuming the difference between full safety and non).

And unfortunately, not all Malaysians are of the attitude that it's worth it to spend s little extra for the safety features. Unless the govt make it mandatory to fit Airbags/ABS on all cars, manufacturers will continue to offer models with nil/little safety features for the low end model.

Anyway, at the end of the day, safety features can help in accidents/emergency situations etc. But what is more important is driving attitude. Practice defensive driving and it can safe more lives than safety features. And PUT ON THAT SEATBELT!!!!

Should be right side since it's using most of the Savvy gimmicks. Seriously hoping it's not following the Waja style, confusing.

Hmmm.....let's see, if a car came banging into you, it would most likely from the back or side, righT?

In this case, ABS/Airbag also not of much use......what would be more important would be the car's structural stiffness to absorb and deflect the force of impact from the passenger cabin. This is where crumple zones/side impact bar etc come into play.....in this case, I think they would play a more important role as compared to Frontal Airbags and ABS.
Side airbags would help though..........but as it is, it's seldom offered even in more expensive imported models (excluding premium brands/high end cars etc).

On the other hand, if all Malaysians practice safety driving, more accidents can be avoided, not?

Haha....this is beginning to become a discussion on general safety of cars instead of focusing on the SAGA.... tongue.gif

Your comments are acceptable. Since it's based on the Savvy, by which means it has a rigid passenger body cell?

Seriously buy this car first and see for yourself..you'll adapt to it in no time..gys who complain about the left signal usually never drive a LHS signal stalk before.
