If you want to learn how to use a dedicated camera, a6000 is definitely still valid. But please remember that the lens is the one that makes the image, the camera body merely a image recorder. If you don't have budget for a better lens right now, I suggest you save up till you have enough money for both the body and a lens. If not, very likely the following scenario will happen.

1, you got the a6000, you will be very happy and excited and you start taking photos (with the kit lens) and expecting a much better results than your phone camera. 2. You may not be able to see much difference of the photo qualities you got from a6000 and your phone camera. 3) Very soon, the excitement will wear off especially for the fact that, the phone camera is always with you and your starting to get lazy to bring an extra piece of electronic device during your outing, which you're not even sure if you're going to use or not. 4) Slowly, you find that, the camera is sitting on the shelf/storage more often than you think you will use it. 5) You started to regret and now u want to sell it and move on.

@kidmat, m50 is a good choice (I used to recommend it a lot myself on this forum) , but EOS -M is a dying mount. I would think the E mount is more future secure option for the TS or anyone who wanted to start photography.

Why not just pick up a budget DSLR with a kit lens and top it up with a 2nd hand telephoto? You can spend the additional money saved on a small dry cabinet, fast memory cards, and even a hotshoe 3rd party flash for some creative lighting.

Mirrorless is light on weight but not light on your wallet. Beware.

Saw some budget DSLRs selling in Lazada/Shopee for less than 2k?

Also TS doesn't seem to have a look of money. He even thought the A6300 (discontinued model) is too high of a price for him... don't think he can even afford a M50 non-Mk II.

urm if it's really no budget then i too concurr Sony A6000 instead of DSLR below RM2k. the Nikon's D3500 series lack in auto focus and it's relatively slow compared to mirrorless counterpart. Canon D1xxx series stay away.. D250 as an entry the price is comparable to M50 MKii ady.

other options i have in mind would be the M4/3 from Olympus those are great walk around cameras as well. Anyway i do not have the lower end DSLR but i've had Canon D250, Nikon's D5600 when compared to my M50 and A6000 i just don't enjoy shooting with them. Anyway before pandemic i sold everything i had and just recently moved into fujifilm but i still think sony's sharpness could be better. Just wanted to try "Fuji Colors". hehe

Saw a few A6000 selling at 1.79k... probably a good choice cept that the ergonomics kinda meh.

For the D3500, as long as the central focus point works well... just reframe and shoot after locking in. Since TS is probably not going to have any 1.8/1.4 grade lenses, DOF would not be an issue?

From your comments I can tell you have a fair budget to play around with various options... haha poor TS probably confused already by this point.

Which Fujifilm do you have currently? Might go that route when I am 'retired' 10-20 years from now lol.

The D3500 yeah if focal point always at middle then most likely you can get a sharp image most of the time.. or you have to be very good at fixing the focal point. That's what i have to do in my D5600, if not mistaken it has 45 auto focus point with 11 cross type can't recall. fairly advance compared to D3500. but once you nailed it.. it's sharp.

I'm now using fujifilm x-s10 will use it for a longer period of time. I find it not as sharp as nikon/sony and it's only good up until iso 3200 max. When it comes to all the video and photo's produced out of the camera that's where i like them, it can be used immediately out of the camera without much editing. I only shoots in JPEG use their software capture one which is free for fuji owners minor edit for the photo's all at one go.. viola can use ady.

Anyway from a review posted by DCW,

Nikon does not use on-sensor phase-detection autofocus in its DSLRs, relying on slower contrast-based autofocus instead. Or at least it should be slow. But somewhere along the line Nikon has found a way to make the D3500’s live view AF feel almost as responsive as a mirrorless camera’s, and we think it’s down to the AF-P autofocus technology in its kit lens.

(Indeed, swapping to one of Nikon’s AF-S lenses confirmed that it’s the AF-P system that’s providing the speed.)

After reading thru the review, I feel the D3500 is pretty rock solid. Comparable to my old trusty D80 which I had to retire due to the LCD starting to KO + ACU gone lolz.

If it was me, I will choose A6000(owned its).

Go with the kits, explore the kits lens limit, then decide what next to purchase for the lens.

Nowaday many 3rd party such as Tamron, Sigma, Samyang, Viltrox produced a good and reasonable price lens for the e-mount APSC.
Each lens with their own characteristic.

Wish that our RM return back to Rm3.7 or below era per USD.

Sigh

P/S: A6000 got eyes auto-focus
