Well, I just ran a quick test and found that GitHub.com is 6% blocked in China.

According to a Chinese netizen, they can only access GitHub.com during midnight now. What a bad news for China coders.

What does this mean for you? Do you not feel for them?
(They do have their own Gitee.com as a source code sharing platform.)

do they have an alternative? Thought china always copycats the west and make their own version of a website/service.

Because tools that can be used to breach the internet firewall (a.k.a VPN) can be found on GitHub.

From what I know, they do grant exemptions depending on the nature of the work that a company does. Our 2 offices in China has the office IP addresses whitelisted for github access.

Gitee, looks quite a lot similar to GitHub, maybe they really are copycats. lol

But my recent encounter is that Gitee, does not allow upload by files, only Git command is allowed.
And the good thing about Gitee, is that under every repo, they have this comment section (you won't see this in GitHub, although they have alternative and separate Discussion tab)

Today I found upload files function is available on Gitee, so there was a mistake in my statement quoted above.

Is gitee safe or do you think they search your cookies?

(Since my main account has been recovered, I will use this username to reply)

I have no idea what Gitee would do with my cookies. From experience, I can tell GitHub is easier to use, and look more professional.

Gitee has policy to deactivate account as dormant after two years of inactivity, which is something I don't like.
And I have no control over the username of my Gitee account, if you sign up with Gmail like wongahhuat @gmail. com, the Gitee username is automatically fixed as WongAhHuat_7d9c. On GitHub, I can even change the username if I don't like the username I chose during signup.

I think Gitee is mostly for their citizens, but even China nationals would want to use GitHub, I suppose.

I just know can use GitLogs to search top repos on GitHub. However, I am still figuring out how to search for the latest repos (within the last minute).

https://www.gitlogs.com/
