Recently I got an affordable temperature scanner and today I decided to just check the temperature of various household equipments.

To my surprise, the MCB (not sure if I am using the correct name for that box, but it is the main black box inside the house with a fuse) part holding the fuse came out to be 100 to 110 degrees celsius with 4 aircons on. Would like to ask if anyone knows this is normal? TQ

This is not normal. It is not supposed to get hot. Call an electrician.

Can you post a pic of which item is getting that hot? I hope its not these ancient fuse boxes - high time to modernise

Yeah, am seriously considering that now. I just realize that when i was doing the measurement, we were boiling water and someone was taking a hot shower as well.

it is the part I circled in red that was in 100s temperature. But the fuse box says 60Amp, which is almost impossible to reach I think. I wonder if the fuse is about to give way: it was last changed like 20 years ago maybe.

Not sure if this function the same as the black box in your picture...

with 4 AC  on and  2  water heater plus others    on ... your  Fuse 63A  should blow  ...  i have seen the happen .

the fuse work on  heat . if too hot for long  it should blow. to protect your house wirings .

agree... and yesterday was a very hot day, so that could be a factor in increased current load.

60A is not that hard to achieve with your usage
4 1hpaircons on @ 6A each = 24A
1 water heater 3kW class = 16A
Kettle = 9A

this is already 49A/60A. haven't counted your other stuff or 2nd water heater running..

It is better to replace with a proper MCB. Specify either ABB or Hager. If it trips, you just reset (push up).  thumbup.gif

this is MCB ^

ABB store sell pretty cheap for the 63A 2P MCB then you get the electrician to come and install. It might be worthwhile to refresh whole DB box if its just as dinosaur.

Current fuse holder, if fuse blow at night, it is almost impossible to find a fuse icon_question.gif laugh.gif

Agree with you. like you said, didn't even factor in other stuffs like TV, fridges, computers etc.
And yesterday was a hot day. i guess the aircons were working at 100% all at once.

thanks for the ABB or Hager brand recommendations. I completely have no experience in this. Called a local electrician recommended by some shop, and hopefully the chap can come today or tomorrow to take a look and make necessary changes.

Luckily today weather is cooler, and the temperature on the MCB is hovering at 70 degrees. but scary to have it at 100 degrees. can cook meat already.

Sorry I have no electrical knowledge.
Is it possible that ur scanner is actually in Fahrenheit?
Coz i see ur photo, u have duct tape & masking tape on it... IF its really 100 Celsius, it should have melted after so many years

the cheapo scanner was in Celsius mode, and i did double check yesterday by pointing it into my freezer (displayed -15) and pointing to the boiled water (displayed 98). So it is at least ballpark accurate.

yeah, i am surprised as well that the electrical tape seems to be holding on well... time to change the black box regardless I think (the tape was there cos the side plastic chipped off and I didn't want any insect to accidentally go in and cause sparks).
