Hi, I am a first year student and would want to look for a laptop. Need to be portable and low price for uni assignments, like around RM 2k.

I doubt you can get anything meaningful with that budget unless it is used condition. Have to check Carousell and other similar sites for bargains.

I bought a msi modern 14 laptop during singles sales. The price is around 2k and is very portable and the battery life is long. Not sure if the sales is still on

I personally think if you have a bigger budget (approx. 3-4k) it would be better to invest in a more durable laptop since it's only your first year, you'll want it to still function smoothly a few years post-uni or at least until you're done with uni. It all depends on how you take care of your laptop to prolong its durability, but many uni students tend to "abuse" their laptops (many opened tabs, long days and nights gone without restarting the laptop at all), think of it as a long-term investment. You wouldn't want your laptop to start acting up by your last year in uni, that would be annoying and you'd have to spend more again. Been there, done that. However, here are some budget-friendly student laptop options that matches your current allocated budget:

Lenovo ThinkPad E550 - the heaviest among all choices here, around 3kg - don't really recommend as it's heavy
Acer Aspire 5 (RM2k+) - below 2kg, long battery hours
Microsoft surface go series (RM 1.4k and above) - touchscreen, convertible, lightweight (a little more than 1kg)
BMAX X15 Laptop (RM1.5k+) - slightly heavier, around 2kg
Dell Latitude E7440 (RM1.4k+) - below 2kg, touchscreen

Switch to MSI recently and I would say Modern 14 is doing better than other brands with its price range

Can look for modern 14, the one with only 2199 currently. it's light to carry around and its cheap!
