I have been eyeing on the Steamdeck for quite a while.
But I always felt it wasn't worth it since Steam has yet to officially release it here (no warranty, higher pricing)

Thus, I got the Asus ROG Ally instead.
Was really impressed by the versatility and power behind it.
As a gaming machine, the amount of games it can run natively is pretty amazing.
For those with gamepass ultimate, this is definitely a huge plus.
It does drain power though, so a external powerbank is almost a necessity for more demanding games...

But even when it's not used as a gaming machine, you can easily plug this into a dock and it works as a medium powered PC.
And as a windows machine used for web surfing / office work, it just sips battery power.

The latest update regarding fan speed help resolve most of the sd card issues.
I don’t really have any issues with my sd card so far.

Having said that.
A 1TB high speed micro sd card (sandisk extreme pro) is more expensive than a 2TB SSD.

So the optimum way is to just upgrade the ssd to 2TB or more.

i don really use sd slot but i do mind when it is not usable when i need it and you wont know when the day will come for urs to be defective.

another safer way will be like what u said upgrade the SSD and assume that rog ally doesnt have any sd card slot if i am going to buy 1.

will see how it goes with the lenovo legion first since tmr i think will be the launching date already.

With a 2 years local warranty, at least I know they would replace it if there are any issues.
The Legion go does look interesting, I'm also eager to see if its specs justify the cost.
It starts from USD 799. And if the cheapest model is for the standard Z1 with 256GB, it's certainly a lot more pricier than the Asus Rog Ally.

Tomorrow is the official announcement date, release is in October.

I wonder if they'll include an OLED screen.
The fact that they use better joysticks, detachable like joycons and even has a mouse track pad is cool.
I heard they do have slightly better battery too.

But from leaks, it's using the same Ryzen Z1 extreme.
And it's also heftier than the Asus ROG Ally.

Screen is great.
1080p vs 720p is very obvious on that screen.
120hz isn’t really needed in most cases, but it’s good to have.

Regarding battery life.
You need a portable powerbank. It last about 2 hours with Genshin impact.
I would say this is the biggest weakness. A Nintendo switch has double the battery lifespan.

Software update is seamless.
basically like updating a windows laptop.

Next is the size and weight.
I’ve mixed opinions on this. I know it’s smaller and lighter than the steam deck. But it still takes a good amount of space in your bag. It’s not something you put in your bag and forget about it.

As for games selection
This is the biggest win.
I’m on gamepass ultimate. So there is a good list of games already available to me.
With gamepass ultimate, steam and emulation, this device can play a huge variety of games at not much cost.
It’s also powerful enough to play AAA games at a low setting. I’d say the performance is somewhat similar to a PS4 Pro or Series S.

While silent, I do feel I’m really pushing the console to the max when playing AAA games. The exhaust gets really really warm. More so than the switch.

As for overall experience.
I would say it fits my use case very well.
Basically a powerful handheld console that can work as a portable pc.

The portable gaming space is having a bit of a renaissance though. The ally will likely be outdated relatively quick.
So it may not be a bad idea to wait too.

Thanks for your detail review. Really appreciate it.
Is 512gb ssd enough for your games?
Do your unit have the sd card reader issue?

Depends if you like to hoard and your internet speed.
512GB ssd is enough for 2-3 AAA games.
So it’s barely sufficient.
I’m using a 512GB Sandisk extreme sd card.

But a better method would be buying a 2TB SSD and replacing it.

Thanks.
Might as well buy 1 or 2 tb ssd and be done with it.
I mainly play star rail on the go. But as you said AAA game nowadays really chew up ssd storage space.
Thanks for your insight.
