my purchase cycle
2010 - 2011: Lenovo V series (broken because of car accident in 2011)
2011 - 2017: Dell Vostro series (broken too)
2017 - present: newer Dell Vostro series (cannot upgrade to Win11 because of the gen 7th chipset)

Now I wonder, how long can I still keep my Dell...

If it works fine then hold on another few months to see how good is DDR5 and Intel 12th gen. Windows 11 is not worth upgrading your laptop for. Give it another six months to iron out its issues too. None of the latest AAA games are exciting. Similar to Vostro's price range, you won't find many laptops that is worth your money.

For me untill it broke, slow to the point that it is annoying and no upgrade options or maybe stolen.

Previous Dell laptop last me for almost 6 years before it was stolen(my house kena break in). current one I think 4 years? and still good

As I use mainly for light office work only and have a dekstop for heavy lifting

2018 - ASUS FX503 until now
Having fan issue and frequently overheating because of bad thermal cooling, will probably use for a few more years as it still fulfill my daily usage well, although slower than those newer models out there.

could try to replace your thermal paste (if you dare)...
I manually replace my 2017 Dell thermal paste, and getting good result, now the temperature is much stable thumbsup.gif
(but it does involve some extend of risk ya...)

I often hear consensus that Acer is crappy don't last for most people, but somehow for me never really had any issue and works great. I was a heavy gamer and often push my laptop to the limits but all ok till now. After this thinking of saving up to move on to Dell's XPS line tho. blush.gif

2012 y580 used till now, straight changed to ssd and use hdd in cd drive slot when just bought, upgraded the ram to 8gb too.

In between, the ssd died once, changed it 2019. Still going strong till now, mostly using it with charger 100% of the time, didn't plug in the battery since it will only last 1-2 hours.

Now i try to play some recent games(not aaa), need adjust lowest settings and play with 30fps only.
Before MCO still able to play dota 2 with low settings at 50fps iinm.

For my current usage of web browsing and watching videos, still perform 10/10.
Next year gona be 10 years old.

Thinking if I should retire it now and get a new laptop, but at the same time, i don't feel the need to upgrade as it is still serving it's purpose wonderfully..

Used to upgrade every two years. Now no more.

<2016: Dell, Lenovo (all not very good, broken)
2016 - 2017: HP Elite X2 (broken)
2017 - now: Acer Spin 5
2019 - now: Microsoft Surface Go

I am surprise how good Acer and Microsoft Surface Go are. They have so far little problem. My previous laptop from Dell, HP and Lenovo all have major problems. So right now I am considering Acer and Microsoft. But would like to try MSI or Asus for a change. Having used touch screen, my next laptop should also touch screen.

I also have a desktop with Intel 8th generation chip and ASUS ROG motherboard, I can't remember when I bought it but I use that for work and am still using it.

I think it all depends on your usage, I always have a bunch of tabs on and always let my laptop sleep instead of shutting them down completely. I believe that was one of the reasons to explain the short lifespan of my laptops. Cheers!

Depends. Usually 10 years or so.

Newest is the L440 fully modded. Oldest is the X32 from 2005. All still working fine.

I'm in the process of fixing many dead laptops at home to be given away for charity.

2007 - 2010, Acer duo core laptop
2011 - present, 1Malaysia netbook
2014 - present, cheapest lenovo i3 4 gen.

to my suprise, i got 1 Malaysia netbook from government, use 4 years for my uni time, still stand strong although it is super lag (honestly i sufer a lot when doing assignment). All my brother & cousin who received 1Malaysia netbook already broken within 6 months received of the netbook ((biasalah, Malaysia product). Until now it have 11 years already.

Lenovo also not bad, every week sure dota 2, still stand strong and i m happy with the performance. no issue at all except the charging cable rosak after 1 year sharp.
