Of course there are a few exceptions

But by and large Malaysians don't read for entertainment. We spend more time watching TV or crapping political shit on /k or equivalent

BBW typically attracts the same old bookworms and isn't that successful, not for a 10 million pax potential market in KV.

It's fun to read and such with low cost. But the problem with bookexcess is that thier book quality is very much stick to learning better language in general and very little good quality technical books to up skills for other sector.

It's build with dumpster book in mind where you need to dig through a ton of stuff just to get a few good ones.

You see a lot of auntie buy books from bbw not because they are a good read, but the nature of thick book at a low price that attract them to buy for either resell or donate to orphan.

Bookxcess firstly is the Reject Shop/FOS model where they dump a lot of unsold books. Secondly they focus on entertainment. So there would be very few "technical" books. Usually you'd get those from university and specialist sellers.

But I went to this shop and saw they have a lot of coffee table books.

BookXcess sucks btw.

Yes, their books are cheap which u can get below RM20, but the collections that available are really bad.

I'm a big fan of fiction books such as thrillers, horrors. But majority of the genre books that available mostly full with trash/unreadable books.

I bought Kindle Paperwhite(e-reader) at Shopee that cost me RM700++ and I can buy latest books from Amazon or alternative website to download books for free.

I won't pay RM50-100 for 1 paperback/hardcover books.

Government bising orang Malaysia tak suka membaca, but they dont even bother to put more budget to our local libraries, provide subsidy to purchase new books etc

But instead spending on unnecessary things such as giving RM150 E Wallet to students. Priority ke laut.

The other day while searching The Crysalids by John Wyndham after seeing Kino selling then at almost 100, Google suggested get them from BookXcess for about 20. Sebab tu singgah MyTown branch. Sekali tengok jadi sarang TikTok and Insta girls.

The bookstores that I visited in the US many years ago used to have cafes and areas where they had performances and signings on weekends. Sadly, many have closed down.

Glad to see something nice coming up in Malaysia, but sure about the sustainability.

I mostly browse these bookstores to check out new titles to download to read on my Kindle. It's very hard to find more obscure books or complete series since they tend to only stock that stuff that actually sells.

Wut. You know all the Kindles are fully touchscreen nowadays? You just tap the screen to turn the page. It's not like 5 years ago where the cheapest standard Kindle had buttons to turn the page and didn't have a built in light. Now all the Kindles come with these features. It's only the more expensive Kindle Oasis that has buttons nowadays for the oldfags that prefer physical buttons. Even then you can still tap to turn the page. It's not an LCD screen so you won't have any eye strain unless you've got a special disease that causes eye strain from reading a book in the first place rolleyes.gif

Bookdepo still cheaper

I generally browse and buy nonfiction books that have won either Pulitzer prize or Baillie Gifford prize , or come up in the shortlist. Sometimes I'll even browse those books that people recommend to be in the running.

thinking to buy kindle too but not a fan of their physical button clicky thing to turn page

in your opinion really no eye strain anot? cause that’s the only kindle selling point for me, cause cannot read encyclopaedia in it
*
No eye strain compared with LCD/OLED screens like laptop/monitors or iPad. Also, it helps you focus on the reading. with iPad, you tend to stray to doing other things.

I got a Kindle Oasis. Strangely when you think of the ebook reader, you think wanting like iPad, full touch screen. But then after awhile, you prefer having the physical page turn buttons like Kindle Oasis.

Maybe it's different for everyone but there's a market for physical page turn buttons. Look at the latest Kobo Sage for instance or Boox Nova air (which purposely had a cover casing that's having physical page turn buttons.

Very true.. BBW sift thru for hours then only think think is it worth to gamble on new-to-me author. Sometimes got gems but book availability sucks.

It was good to fill in the blanks for favourite author stuff that I didn't manage to cover.

Yes I have but the link doesn't factor in shipping so u need click one by one

Whereas BookDepo have free shipping clearly stated so you can't just take the price at face value

Mmmm… I still feel if it’s a bookstore, kinokuniya klcc is probably lots better as a bookstore (and also it’s collection) . Eye level book racks (except on perimeters) and line of sight is such an important thing. I really don’t get why ppl stack so high until u need ladders. Library maybe, but book store? Safety first….

I Donno about the one in mytown, but the book access in KL EAST is filled with fire hazard situations with tight staircases, not clear line of sight to exit n such. Looks “nice” but terrible by usage. It’s always unclear where everything is once u go way in.

Design is design, but Don’t forget fire requirements yo, Especially in a place filled with books.
