Yes, this is the norm and has been the norm for a while now. The price you paid or even the CIF value means very little to their Customs as they have a price gazette for just about everything.
Yunda is probably the best and the cheapest, also most likely to be able to clear your goods and deliver it in one piece.
It's indeed a pain to send items into China these days. While it's rare for the items to be stolen, it isn't unusual that something is purposely stopped for random checks.
