Hi all. I have been trying to change industry as my current role does not fit me well, i dint foresee myself to stay in this line for good. Recently got a new offer of my desired industry but with 20% paycut.. is it justifiable. I am early 30 no kids yet, but i find it difficult to downgrade my salary. Any feedback?

what is the potential of this industry? If this is the industry you have interest which foresee you have long term career, take it as stepping stone.

As for salary cut, ask yourself, can you sustain with reduced salary or not? Or, just your pride to downgrade salary?

From marketing/sales to teaching. I can sustain, just more like pride to downgrade.

20%? I took a 70% and no regrets. Also to education line.

One thing, the work in the education line is not financially rewarding, but if it is your calling, then you will enjoy it.

If it's your industry and if it's your passion ...Id say go for it.

Take the pay cut if you can swallow. I left a mnc job that needed me day and night into meetings to a local company. Accepted 20 percent pay cut and got back the 20 percent cut I took in 2 years via promotion. It gave me better work life balance and peace of mind.

As long can sustain my life I won't mind downgrading. Doing something I like feel more rewarding to my mind.

Speaking as someone who has done it before (took a 40%) paycut to go into teaching, I'd say consider carefully. I'm back in the industry after almost 3 years of frustration and disappointment.

As one who has gone through that personally, I would say no. To get back the lost 20% took me at least 4 years which was a real pain.

I took a pay cut twice because I moved to an industry where I had no experience and had to learn from scratch. From being in a call center (1 year) to IT/designer (12 years) to content moderator/copyright related (almost 1 year as of now). It's what I wanted and never regretted it, great experience and met a lot of nice people. My salary never went above RM3.5k throughout my career (no, I never had to starve myself) and am still able to live comfortably. I'm in my late 30s and not married and things are going well. There were countless times I was told to move for a better pay but to hell with pride, I enjoyed what I was doing and I was earning enough.

Depends if your passion or interest is worthwhile enough for that 20% cut.

If it is a new industry, you will be treated as one with no experience. Hence a paycut makes sense. Just take it if it makes you happy.

If your working time become more flexible, workload less compare to current one and in addition its a job you can enjoy then why not. You will definitely live a more quality lifestyle.

HI TS, do whatever that makes you feel happy and comfortable with.

in life, we always regret about the the things that we did not do rather than something you did.

if you are not taking this opportunity now, 5 years or 10 years down the road, you will keep thinking what if you took the leap of faith and change job, life would be much better / different. no right or wrong. just that just suck it up for the consequence of your decision.

and another piece of advice would be, please try to nego with the new employer for to adjust the salary as close as possible with your current one. another 5 to 10% would be great.

We live in capitalistic and materialistic driven world that people cannot fathom not being able to change their phones every few months. We place so much of our self worth based on how much we earn that we will never ever get to taste what it feels like to wake up every morning looking forward to do the things that we like doing.

Wait...

Teaching in a university or in an international school

if it's in an international school, forget it. Don't do it. Many ppl regret this. Low pay and dealing with pampered kids everyday. Just forget about it.

If it's a college/university, then still ok.

I did take the pay cut once, I tried 2 years.
I felt my $$$ tighter, at first I didn't mind at all.

I received better offer and benefits after that. I think I was not in the right mind back then.
