He was excellent as Puyi in The Last Emperor. He and Joan Chen deserved to be at least nominated for Best Actor and Actress for that movie but unfortunately, they won't consider Asians at that time despite the movie getting nominated and win so many Oscars.
Another forgotten but really good movie from John Lone was Year of the Dragon.

He also starred with Mickey Rourke in this movie, Year of the Dragon
Decent crime flick and he looks the part as a slick crime boss and speaks pretty good Cantonese here too
he was an orphan borned in hk... his childhood story is pretty sad, he went acting after adopted in US.
After famed in hollywood, he went back to HK and get treated like shit even hollywood treat him so well. he still insists making movies with hk and china but ended up miserably... and also lost so many opportunity in hollywood because he wanted to make movies in china. sadly he was not known by his own homeland but japanese treat him like god.... u can dig up his old japanese commercials

Are you sure about being treated badly in HK? After The Last Emperor, he and Joan Chen were very big n HK but he was a Hollywood star and not many HK movies can afford him. Also, HK cinema at that time was at its height with their own stars. As for China, he did go back and made a few TV series but just like HK movie industry, they can’t afford him as China entertainment industry was just beginning at that time and was not paying so well like today. He did try to get the Leslie Cheung’s role in Farewell to my Concubine but lost to Leslie. After that, he sort of retired from acting as Hollywood keep giving him bad guys/triad boss/Fu Manchu type of roles due to the success of Year of Dragon and Rush Hour 2.

you're right at the beginning part, but things goes ugly in casting of "Farewell to my Concubine"
John was so obsessed with the role mainly because he reassembled his own childhood, being orphan and raised in chinese opera house, he rejected a few hollywood movies and spent a lot of time to prepare for the role, and at the end it went to Leslie, that is fine, but since then China and HK press launch a media propaganda on him, spreading lies on him to protect their own industry and boycott all his future releases including the M Butterfly. (M Butterfly finally fulfills his dream to play transgender & opera role)
In the later days, there is a china director scammed him into China TV series and John gave up the role in Memoirs of Geisha, and the chinese series failed miserably, the above video also has a summary of that, you can refer to the below starts from 6:15.
Lastly, M Butterfly is a masterpiece by John Loan but was not public known due to china's propaganda as he was playing and china transgender spy in the film, highly recommended by me.
The Last Emperor.....still remember watching it at PJ sentosa cinema when i was young......Emperor die of STD
Puyi did not die of STD. He lived a long live and died as a gardener. He even got married after he was released from re-education but the movie did not portrayed it.
Last Emperor was one of the best movies from the 80’s and the first foreign movies to film in the Forbidden City.

bit of trivial, Farewell to my Concubine's director, Chen Kaige also played a small cast in the last emperor as a guard, with less than 1min appearance
