Are you sure about being treated badly in HK? After The Last Emperor, he and Joan Chen were very big n HK but he was a Hollywood star and not many HK movies can afford him. Also, HK cinema at that time was at its height with their own stars. As for China, he did go back and made a few TV series but just like HK movie industry, they can’t afford him as China entertainment industry was just beginning at that time and was not paying so well like today. He did try to get the Leslie Cheung’s role in Farewell to my Concubine but lost to Leslie. After that, he sort of retired from acting as Hollywood keep giving him bad guys/triad boss/Fu Manchu type of roles due to the success of Year of Dragon and Rush Hour 2.
you're right at the beginning part, but things goes ugly in casting of "Farewell to my Concubine"
John was so obsessed with the role mainly because he reassembled his own childhood, being orphan and raised in chinese opera house, he rejected a few hollywood movies and spent a lot of time to prepare for the role, and at the end it went to Leslie, that is fine, but since then China and HK press launch a media propaganda on him, spreading lies on him to protect their own industry and boycott all his future releases including the M Butterfly. (M Butterfly finally fulfills his dream to play transgender & opera role)
In the later days, there is a china director scammed him into China TV series and John gave up the role in Memoirs of Geisha, and the chinese series failed miserably, the above video also has a summary of that, you can refer to the below starts from 6:15.
Lastly, M Butterfly is a masterpiece by John Loan but was not public known due to china's propaganda as he was playing and china transgender spy in the film, highly recommended by me.
