Hi everyone.

I'm planning to get my very first 4x4 pickup truck. Thing is I have no idea which one to get.

I know the famous ones are

1. Ford Ranger
2. Toyota Hilux
3. Isuzu Dmax
4. Nissan Navara
5. Mitsubishi Triton

Anyone here own any 4x4 truck or used to owned one? What brand and model did you buy and why? Do you actually buy for workhorse or for show...

I'm leaning towards Ford Ranger and maybe the raptor too but how does it perform in real life? Is it good or bad?

Heard it is the number one in Malaysia I'm not sure why is that..

Any other alternative than Ford Ranger that you can suggest I'm open to your feedback as I said I never own any pickup in my life before this. So any points helps guys. Thanks!

Toyota Hilux/Ford Ranger. Easy to maintain.

I used to drive Navara, Triton , Ranger and Hilux. The best still goes to hilux, very durable. Less problem even at 200,000km still going strong

you want cheap roadtax get that 1.9L dmax, no fear kena curi take a Hilux, want something highway cruiser take a triton

Ford ranger / mazda bt50.
I drive the bt50 old version. Solid workhorse. 250k km on it.
Already tested Viva and Altis and Kembara-proof (minor scratch n dings but nothing drop) a lot of sleepy idiots so i put the red yellow commercial sticker on the tailgate "just so they know" i am there

Then maybe ranger ok. I say that coz for people who always hardcore masuk hutan, then only hilux recommended coz u dont want to breakdown in hutan..

Hailak too many went to migrate overseas..few friends kena.

Only failure i had was in jalan imbi jam. Some ppl might hate me for breaking down in peak hr and stuck like a damsel in distress because clutch hose burst after 8 years. Lucky got 3 abang pulis trafik help me stop all lanes and push it into bus stop while i wait for tow truck.

Best tyre: oversize 31.5x10.5x15 made in japan yokomahal geolander AT. Stuff lasts forever. Other tyre botak too fast

First ask yourself why you need one. If you can’t find an answer, pls buy a normal car.

new dmax is quite good tbh, as reliable as hilux but the design is fresher

hailat.. their 1st batch of 3.0L got very weak brakes.

no idea abt current model since not many using hailak now.

Old 2.5 Dmax suspension more sampan in corner than a maivee is it still like that?

G class no need 4x4. 2x4 Triton enough.

4x2 bang, 2x4 implies a vehicle with 2 wheels in which the torque gets delivered to 4 wheels

My hilux 2015 still going strong even already clocked 180k

last gen hailat, tank like hell except sked kena steal

1. D-Max 1.9L 4x2
2. Hilux(in 90's this ranked no.1, but not since 2018)
3. no other else unless you'd a deep pocket(a Raptor)

Do you see alot of older 2.2L XLT Ford Ranger out there ?? My mechanic warned me not to buy. He replaced many turbochargers for this truck. 6k .

Hilux new , no stock everywhere. Dmax 1.9L too. Shortage.

Navara , rear suspension use coil springs. No good to carry heavy item.
Triton , got ready stock at MMM . Quite powerful for a 2.4L engine. I personally think this frame is quite soft. Seen a few of these at service center replacing bent frame. No idea what reason that caused it.

Used Hilux super good 2nd hand value . My friend just sold a year 2008 manual 2.5L 4x4 with 239k km milleage for RM39k. My 2014 Vios with 40k+ km was offered much less than that.

I never knew triton had bend frame issue.
Work truck mmg mahal, those single cab also hold good value

Even the new 2.0 biturbo engine is problematic.
Both engine and gearbox seems to be made out of tissue paper. suitable for pondan to drive to IKEA buy self assemble furniture.

Hailak if you only care about being practical.

For enjoice only Ranger is the right choice.

It depends.

The Hilux and DMax tend to be the better ones for heavy duty usage.

Ranger? Good truck let down by a shitty distributor.

Triton? Good highway and urban usage truck, competent off road but not that durable.

Navara? This one is the midfield.

As for me? I like the DMax the best as I use it for agriculture and commercial purposes.

Mazda gooding. Tough ass heavy frame then. Now not sure if its still the heaviest machine. Only caveat is the SC oil price is yahudi so from 2nd service all the way I brought own HDEO to SC (delo 400 or delvac MX) buy from distributor direct.

At 2009 levels the oil cost 400 plus..which can buy two pail 18L already. Mana ada orang use fully for trucks.

what's your intention of getting a 4x4? for work or for gaya?

if for work, tentunya Hilux, no need to consider others. The name speaks for itself

if your own gaya purposes, then whichever one tickles your fancy la.

Volvo XC90. Ride in one before. Besar gila space. Cars also don't come near when driving.

triton is all rounder

I drive the latest DMax 1.9 3rd gen. Very happy with it. Here's my opinion from East Malaysia perspective:

1. Ford Ranger - perfect for urban cowboy. The most expensive to maintain among the list. Quite manja.

2. Toyota Hilux - Super reliable as workhorse and for family. Will never disappoint you. Chesp maintenance.

3. Isuzu Dmax - Hey, it's Isuzu. They only make diesel trucks. Very reliable. Second to hilux. Cheap maintenance.

4. Nissan Navara - passenger friendly. Not suitable for heavy duty tasks but perfect to use in city. Maintenance is on the higher side.

5. Mitsubishi Triton - fall between workhorse and lifestyle. Popular choice among off-roader but not as reliable as hilux and dmax. Heard quite expensive to maintain too.

In bottom line:
Dmax & hilux for reliability.
Triton, ford, navara for city use.
