Very hard to retire la as you get close to the age limit especially if you doing well in one career which also mean you at your highest earning capacity.

And even you have to be declared or forced to retire at 60, one will find way to continue stay employed.

I can't imagine seating idling being unproductive. I don't mind to cut back the hours and have a little work life balance and enjoy the fruits ...

And when you being in position of power as manager or leader, you will find it very bored not being challenged or dealing with crisis. I told my wife if I really retire, I go back to college for a master or doing some courses to keep the brain from going senile.

Every month, can be positive or negative.  But if I don't count my budgeted major expense (mainly my kid's education for next 3-4 years), I look at yearly net worth, it's actually still positive the last few years.

Anyway, I live frugally where possible.
*
If you don't mind me asking, are you below 50?

You saying kid still have 3-4yrs education presumably tertiary.. hence armchair deduction/assumption you are below 50?

Ah OK OK. I'm in same situation except no retirement yet. Got to slaughtered for 3 more years and then I can chillax a bit and get that JDM coupe or convertible while I'm officially "loanable" by the bank.

Updated above...but I guess RM2.5k per pax is a safe calculation.

And I am totally debt free (when I choose to retired, I cleared all my debts).
*
At that rate, do you still have insurance payment? Or that purely living expenses?

I know insurance meant different thing for different folks, I'm hoping to paid enough when I hit 60 and let it run on its own up till 80. Worst case, go to G hospital as earlier discussed if insurance cash balance dries up.

thanks. im just worried i save up too much  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

my field is where the older i become, the more money i make, so ill mostly stay working. but won't strive so hard.
Yup, I would also recommend people nearing 50 to clear off your debt asap, and not have more debts.

having debts in old age is no fun.
*
Small short terms loan that can be terminated with ease is still OK la like car. But of course clear it before retire. If things goes as plan, car loan will end when kid finish college and then down size to a city with the residual balance and that Coupe if I'm still physically fit to touge

Car like my only vice and as long as manageable with logical plan, it's acceptable pleasure la.. smile.gif

Mortgages is no no for me when hit 45yrs old as I cleared them in 5 years when lock in period expired. As many said it's a sense of huge relief and accomplishments when the mortgage is settled and deed is transfered to your name....

Now just need to worry if future SIL have such planning.... tongue.gif

this is a good number... reminds me of starting pay which gets me thinking... 50% above minimum wage should be a very reasonable amount

my planning is rm 100 per pax per day for comfy living...
*
This is the number I’m aiming for too including the kid as well even if they hitting working bracket soon. The gap is now how to get another 50% more to cater for those unexpected non regular expenses.

Just wanted to be safe/conservative to plan for it. If kid fully settled down, then it’s bonus la.

Hard to find.  And lots quit less than a year.  Job needs to travel one week to Vietnam another week to Manila and another to Jakarta and back in KL. You will be expat there. Driver and condo provided. All you have to do is oversee and lead.

People prefer to get paid less and work in more advanced places like UK or Melbourne etc. or rather stay in Malaysia get paid peanuts because of family.

What industry/role is this? Got opening for retire to be folks? 😅

it is not as fun as you think... especially if you are a producer and there are actual work that you actually contribute to completion. the weekly traveling is extremely tiring; based on actual experience and I was like in my 20s.

But I guess if the post is the useless management type role where you just fly here and there and meet the actual local heads and just talk, then maybe it can be fun.
*

Aiseh you saying batman 1172 either doing real work or useless mgmt role as he said oversee and lead... sweat.gif

Travelling can be taxing. Used to do them when younger. Living off suitcase. Fly off Sunday night home Friday evening within region. Fly to chiangmai and midweek to Jakarta and then home and another route next week.

Can be tough for the young. 80% of my colleagues then are either single or divorced,.... or going to.... wink.gif

This thread keep me company especially that scam forex MG and FD promo as im waiting for some to matured... even when travelling to Japan. You folks Keep me company while I'm lost in the sea of nihon jin....

If you all bitch and whine on property, here in Japan, house is a depreciating asset and has been depressing since the bubble burst.

House prices will dropped until nominal land value and the next gen will mortgage again to have a rebuilding cost for a new structure.

Plus the aging issues, there are many akiya aka abandoned house here that you technically can have almost for free.... with loads of caveat.....

True , 850k DS corner rent only RM1200, higher people not willing to pay susah...
if everyone same mentality look down on used  properties
must live only in new houses only ...shouganailah.

here decrepit houses in  central location  people offering good prices also
demolish rebuild sell make money........

same thing cannot be done  in places like Tokyo?
*
Generally those akiya or free/low cost abandoned house are usually with poor location and abandoned for a good reason. Not so much of ex dead owner but rather it cost too much to be rebuilt hence abandoning it. Japan still have inheritance tax which can be prohibitive which is why some offspring rather not having such unless it commercially viable to be inherited for rebuilding. There tend to be situated in country side even within Tokyo or Osaka. With such huge sizes and pocket of area with little access ie train or amenities, it’s fall off the typical Japanese radar. Some soc med trend now in YT with increasing foreign content creators jumping in and buy such and rebuild them for their content. The Chinese investor has been lured onto it for quite a while now (not the YT type) and convert them to Airbnb etc. but Japan city ordinance on such are grey and complicated that commercial return is questionable unless it is located in a prime location like very close to train station etc.

Those that can be rebuild and resell with profits are generally rare and would have been taken up by the owner or real estate company.

Talking about personal finances, any recommendations on expense tracker app that easy to use and can be ported out to excel and most importantly free?

Don’t need any fancy future retirement planning etc. it’s nice to have but not a must.

Currently I’m doing it old school way that I will tabulate all my expenses every few days with the receipts from CC.

I use Cc for all my expenses as much as possible instead of cash for the receipt and record to ease reconciliation later. I will pay even massimo bread with Cc… 😅 only tough part is food court and roadside with no such facilities hence the apps tracker for it if any.

Thanks

many of us under his division were saying the same... but all his choices. Plus company has another division in charge of spending mah... its called the accounting department. haha.

Tuition for uni in UK is close to 40K GBP per year. living allowance is say 2K gbp per month. so all add up is like 60K GBP => 360K myr.
Private schools in Malaysia is also not cheap... easily 50 to 60K rm per year.

If his kids educations were the only large expenses, may still be fine. but his lifestyle is not cheap. He has 2 drivers and 3 to 4 luxury conti cars, another example.

edit:
The good thing going for him is that all these education expenses will end sooner or later.
But time is running against him... he is almost 60, so maybe he has another 5 years top to continue earning his millions to build a decent egg-nest?
which goes back to a old example of how each person is born with around 80 sticky notes. How one wish to use one's sticky notes is one's choice. At 60, one only has 20 left.
*
40k gbp are those top school like Imperial College London, LSE, etc doing engineering..not sure fir medical. If he spent 60k, maybe doing medical. If kid do well, he will recover ROI tongue.gif

Anyway at that age, they at peak earning, why quit when you get paid top dollar... so may not necessarily to FIRE. Unless he is really crapped on his fin mgmt, they should have some backup exit plan somewhere

To be honest, a life lived where every penny is pinched is also a life lived in misery ... so I think a balance is important. I'm happy for your boss and his choices. It's all worked out well for him and his children so far.

Indeed, some balance needed. Don't be so "HUG POK" otherwise can't enjoy n kaput

Like my wife say, your son in law will drive that porsche instead of you... not that I can afford one. blush.gif

I presume you are younger than 55? Long way to go to think of such. Clear your bucket list... without kid or any left behind next gen, you are cleared for many choices..... biggrin.gif work so hard to get where you are... enjoy it
