I first started this thread exactly 4 years ago. I am 50 already. i spend most of my times  with my child and doing volunteering work.

I am actually quite happy my financials (this I have to thanks everyone here for contributing ideas and suggestions)  notworthy.gif

My financials  is  more than RM6 million now, I have no loan or mortgage. What I have been doing for the past 4 years is :
- minus amount of my FD, 30% of my portfolio
- only hold dividend paying and blue chips in KLSE (Maybank, Tenaga, RHB, IGBreit, PavReit)
- bought 3 SG banks and 3 reits in SGX
- bought gold (physical and etf), today is 10% of my portfolio

Again, Thank you everyone here wub.gif

Congrats!
I have never FIREd.
But i am 63 years now. Retired and still consulting. AND travelling! thumbup.gif
My 2 children are graduated and living in Australia. They just bought their own properties. I paid for their down payments. laugh.gif

Your financials are very impressive! After paying for the children's education and property down payments, i am left with only pittance.
My investments are similar to yours.
- NO FD. Everything cash in EPF- 30% of portfolio
- NO KLSE
- Started investing in SGX in 2011. Banks and REITs for dividends. Approx 25% of portfolio.
- LONGGGGG Gold since 2002. Gold paid for my children's education and property. Physical Gold is now 28% of my portfolio due the rise in price in the last 2 years. Gold/silver miners make up another 20% of my portfolio due to the astronomical rise recently.

Wishing you the best. thumbup.gif

If just undergraduate studies, AUD100k per year is more than enough.
*
Right. Most good courses are 4 years course.

QUOTE(MGM @ Oct 13 2025, 08:29 PM)
Rm1 mil for education + rm2 mil for property.
*
About right.

QUOTE(ltpg @ Oct 14 2025, 09:18 AM)
xan share how much is the average property cost there? a lot of us need to plan
*
Depending on which city. Sydney is out of whack. Houses are like average $1.5 million
Perth is much cheaper. Approx $750k average.
Melbourne is approx $1mil average.

So education is approx $400k and house downpayment of approx $500k
equals $900k = RM2.48 million in today's rate.

as a malaysian i wont even consider Australia as my sister is there for almost 30 years
once ur kids go there (in this case i refer to my sister) they never wanted to come back
now 30 years plus she has her own family and made it in life she say this to me - study australia ok, have family here = no family
dont get me wrong she has a wealthy and loving husband, she has a good income job, she has kids in australia
now she is there 30+ years and her kids are all adult
her kids is a product of australian made, australian groom, pure australian manage
here comes the problem:
1. culture and tradition all gone
2. empty nester - kids move out when there are 18, some 19 and some 20 and very young age
3. loneliness (husband still alive)

money wont fix any of the above problem

me and her grow up in a big big big family, we stay in kampung house and inside 1 house got 4 generation
*
Well, each to their own.
i sent my children there as i cannot trust the politics of Malaysia. Nor the never ending RnR societal rhetorics of the nation.
We are empty nesters in Msia too. laugh.gif
The thing is whether you know how to form your social networks, whether in Msia or Aus.
As for Australisation of the children, what do you expect? Remain Malaysian? laugh.gif

Loneliness when hubby is still alive means there is a marriage issue. nod.gif

Most people claim to love travelling but they go the same touristy places every time. They totally ignore entire continents while focusing only on a few countries they like. Travelling is a shallow hobby to do when one retires.

Most people just want to be tourists, they have no concept of cultural immersion or experiencing something the way a native would. After a while it becomes tiresome coz being a tourist is tiring.

This of course does not apply to all but most people who say they like travelling are like that from what I can see.

Holier than thou preaching.
Each to his/her own.

i like travelling to visit my friends and family overseas and just chill. Is that for everyone? Nope.

Each to his/her own.

Yea, same here. Although I don't claim to love traveling, in fact I don't really like it, just go for the sake of family trip

It's good reason enough to accompany your family to do what they like. Well DONE! thumbup.gif

Yes. well said.  it's not about the travelling or the place you enjoy. It's who you want to spend time with and creating the memories together with.

TOO TRUE! Nicely put that. thumbup.gif
