Once in vet you can ask for a ball park figure before you opt for any further procedures and surgery. They would also do x-ray potentially before recommending any treatment regime.

I don't think it would be up to 5k but again it's depends on the vet you visiting. Best thing is to get an x-ray or any relevant scan done to confirm if it's indeed the case.
If yes you can use that confirmation to call up other vets and obtain a ballpark figure with other vet's by calling them up if want to enquire about the cost of operation.
