Unable to set 1440p resolution on monitor

Hello,
I am unable to select 1440p resolution when connecting my macbook air to an external monitor, only able to connect 1080p.
Macbook: MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014)
Processor: 1.7 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7
Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB

MacBook Air 2014 only support up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on external. https://support.apple.com/kb/SP700

i believe HDMI of that era only goes up to 1080p. you’ll need mini-dp -> dp cable with a dp monitor, can go up to 2560 x 1600 eg dell ultrasharp 30”.
