After just eight months, veteran star and TVB's deputy general manager Eric Tsang has been promoted to general manager of TVB’s content operations.

According to a media release issued yesterday (Sep 27), the 68-year-old’s responsibilities will include creating various types of content including non-drama, co-produced drama, music and the acquisition and curation of programmes. The new role will take immediate effect.

He's proven he deserves to be up there

Eric joined TVB in 1992 and started out as a host before becoming an actor. He was appointed deputy general manager and special adviser to the administrative committee in January.

Since then, he has “successfully reinvigorated [TVB’s] non-drama programmes by broadening content diversity and re-establishing links and cooperation with Hongkong's entertainment industry”, said the media release.

Under his leadership, the station has produced a number of "hit shows" like reality game shows Dub-Of-War and Stars Academy, which captured the "hearts and minds" of audiences.

And thanks to him inviting Jacky Cheung to perform at the recent Miss Hong Kong 2021 finals, the pageant drew approximately 1.8 million viewers.

The broadcaster believes that with his wealth of experience, Eric will continue to strengthen TVB's core competency in content creation.

Perhaps he can turn things around in the drama department

While TVB seems to have scored some success with its variety shows, ratings are still lacklustre in the drama department.

One of its newer dramas, Murder Diary, is now the lowest-rated TVB drama of all time.

All they have these days are those variety game shows and talk shows recycling the same actors and actresses as guests.

If you watch their recent variety and talk shows, there are some improvements.

There are more youngsters involved and the topics are quite daring.

There is even a show where strawberry generation discuss all sorts of topics with boomer generation which creates a lot of funny sparks.

Their travel shows are eye pleasing too especially those hosted by Taiwan mei mei and every episode will have them in bikinis biggrin.gif

Their big boss is actually from CCP, not impressed with TVB in recent years.

Which is why they brought back Eric Tsang.

After Sir Run Run Shaw and his wife left the company, I heard the Management was in disarray.

A lot of in-fighting which resulted in a lot of good directors and producers leaving/retiring from TVB.

Eric Tsang did managed to reinvigorate the company recently.

The anti-TVB wind due to the katchat protest previously seems to be dying too.

Difficult to compete in drama series nowadays with many countries putting lots of money into series production. Many high quality TV series are being produced globally with sky high budget that TVB can never hope to compete. TVB recent experiment to deviate from their old formula to produce short and tight story with better looking set has not been successful, and changing to more sophisticated plot has also failed to improve rating. TVB still mostly cater for the older audience but those market is getting smaller. And facing immense competition from streaming plaforms, South Korea, China etc it will be difficult to really do much. Market smaller means revenue smaller.

That is why they should be concentrating on their strong points instead of trying to compete with Kdrama or Cdrama.

Kdrama will be more hip and better storyline while Cdrama has bigger budgets.

They should be doing more dramas about HK and look back at why their dramas in the 80's and 90's were popular.

Look at Jdrama. They never really try to compete with Kdrama and maintained their appeal since the 80's.

80s and 90s have lots of lengthy dramas with complicated inter personal relationship as plot devices. They tried it again with Gem of Life in late 2000s and hit very low rating. From that point onward they already decided such approach is no longer viable. It costs a lot of money to produce long TV series and if it hits bad rating then it is very bad news for them.

If you see their series with high ratings, it is usually the smaller production but concentrate more on relationships whether it's serious dramas or comedies. Yes, it's old fashioned but that is their strong points. Concentrate of that type of plots and update it to be more hip and relavent to society. Their market should first be HK and it's surrounding Cantonese speaking provinces in China.

Big budget is never always good. Look at most Cdramas biggrin.gif

how creative can they be when they have big brother CCP breathing down their neck?
*
They do not need to be extremely creative.

Just do what they have been successful in the past and try to replicate it today.

TVB dramas has always been family friendly except for a few series.

As for variety shows, again they just need to do what is entertaining and funny.

They don't have sissy guys or actors/actresses avoiding taxes problems.
