LaCie's new Golden Disk external hard drive sports a unique, liquid-gold look from designer Ora-Ito, with fanless operation and a 500 GB capacity. Boasting a unique liquid-inspired, shiny gold casing by famed designer Oro-Ïto, the Golden Disk offers USB 2.0 connectivity (via a single port) and comes with backup software for both Windows and Mac OS X. The drive itself is a 7,200 rpm device with an 8 MB cache and an average seek time less than 11ms. Perhaps best of all, the fanless drive offers nearly silent operation. "The Golden drive encompasses all that is glamour while having the guts to perform flawlessly with glowing performance," said LaCie's Lise Manteau. "Coming preloaded with utilities for automatic backups, the Golden Disk shines with its ease-of-use when needing to exchange information with friends and family." Expect to see it in October at a retail price of $189. Source: http://news.digitaltrends.com/news/story/1..._disk_is_golden

That aside, if that casing is pure gold - Either it get stolen frequently - Sources of electrocuted death XD

Maybe it's just gold leaf? Or plated with gold but the casing isn't gold itself. After all...gold is soft.

That aside, if that casing is pure gold - Either it get stolen frequently - Sources of electrocuted death XD Many metal hard drive cases today. Not that big a difference really. If it is strong enough to kill you with this case, it's strong enough to kill you with any case. The human body's resistivity makes the case resistivity look like nothing. And besides, the power brick converts the voltage to 12v before it reaches the case. So no instant death for anyone. Unless that person tries to be an hero.

Technically, in Europe, it is mandated that electronics conforming to EU standards come with grounded metal cases , this is also due to EU laws on radiated waves by electronic devices.
