It depends on your daily needs since it will be an electronic investment, so do consider well... If it's for work + letting the kids play, maybe go for a 2-in-1 laptop, so that's dual-functionality for you. Choose laptops with more flexibility like the Windows Surface Pro series / Acer spin 5 series, they can be flipped and are really portable + lightweight.

However, if you're not much of a laptop person, an iPad would suffice as it's less bulky and easier for you and the kids to carry around (it might be a little pricey but if you ever want it to function like a laptop you can always purchase the magic keyboard and use it like a laptop as well!)
