There is little to no correlation between the imaging ability and speaker size. Pro audio speakers are big because they need the clean bass extension. There are 3 and 4-inch studio monitors for those that don't work with low bass content and don't require the SPL levels that the bigger speakers can achieve. In fact it's actually easier to make smaller speakers image better (albeit with limited SPL and bass extension). Closer distance between tweeter and woofer simplifies their integration. If you are not sitting a good distance away from the speakers you don't need them to be big. The closer you are to a bigger 2-way the worse the "smearing" caused by phase issues between the tweeter and woofer.
