Hi. I just remembered I got some American Express Travelers Cheque from quite some time ago. Last time I tried to cash it out (in 2018 I think), most banks said they no longer accepts Travelers Cheques. Tried with Maybank, CIMB and many other major banks, all say nope. RHB say I can, but I need to have a bank account with them.

Last time I successfully cashed out my Travelers Cheque, probably back in 2012. Just walk in to Maybank, say I want to cash out, give them the cheque, sign it and they give me cash.

Tried to contact American Express in Malaysia, but they don't reply. Calling them also was not too helpful because they just ask me to go to Maybank.

There is no issue with your problem ...just open a RHB account.

You cant change a bank policy if it no longer accept TC. Similar, some merchants dont accept Amex card.

i read that they might treat it as a foreign cheque, and after some fee, probably i won't get much.

anyhow, just found out that american express now have online cheque redemption since people don't travel much these few years...
just submitted my claim, we'll see how it goes.

Interesting problem. The last time I bought traveller's cheques was in 2004. Can't imagine they're still in use. Used to be able to use them at Walmart or other grocery stores in the US.

Funny thing is, Maybank support says they no longer accepts or issues travelers cheques. But on their website they still says you can buy travelers cheques from them. Even back then when I cash out the cheques, the bank staff will give me the look, like 'where did you get these?'.

Got reply from Amex today. They ask for a scan of my ID and the cheques countersigned with big large bar crossing one edge to another, ask me to write void. after that need to dispose of that cheque.

I think for the signature is not a problem. Usually when you first bought it, you sign at the top. When you want to use the cheque, you countersign at the bottom. Few of my friends mistakenly countersigned when we first receive our travelers cheque, they still accept it.

There's an option during the claim process, you can choose 'not signed'.

it got an option either local bank deposit or international wire transfer swift. the local only available somewhere but not from msia i think since the option was greyed out, can't select the option.

so, it's from oversea transfer.

Another thing, when they ask for ID, it's better to give passport scan because it got the signature of the owner. I send MyKad scan, they ask for ID that bears signature same as in the cheque.

Now I just need to remember where I put my passport lmao.
