I was about to buy my macbook today, but i was struck with another dilemma because of a certain ram problem. The macbook that is supplied, has 2 pieces of 512 mb ram (512MB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)).

To upgrade it to 2G of ram, i need to fork out an additional Auz$198, which comes out to approximately RM600. Bearing in mind that they are just changing the two pieces of 512 to two pieces of 1G, i was told that this were merely one of the "mac" money policy.

Has anyone tried to upgrade their ram for their macbook, but using the ordinary notebook ram? I know it comes with risk and everything to actually do it on your own, but forking that additional $198 to REPLACE both the 512's, i find it a bit heavy for my liking.

How much is it per piece of 1G ram for the notebook? (Malaysian or Australian price)

Any one tried it out?
