Kampung honey is raw honey. Raw honey SHOULD not be fed to gliders. All websites said PURE honey, means those supermarket ones. RAW has lots of bacteria in it which can harm a glider.

The best advice, no need give honey.

Raw means not clean properly and not heated at the right temperature. Pure honey are those sold at supermarkets. The honey is cleaned and sterilized from bacteria, germs and dirty things. Well, honey can kill germs and bacteria but then sometimes you cannot be too careful with this. You do know that honey is the bee's saliva rite? They do not add preservatives coz honey won't rot. Raw honey can be good for us but we do not know what would come about for gliders since it is not a natural food source for them too. The ones in supermarkets are sterilized with higher heat, making the honey clear to see. There are no preservatives.

Go google Raw honey for sugar gliders.... all the websites which listed Leadbeater's mix all stated no raw honey. I would follow what they say rather than take the risk with raw honey.

QUOTE(dai86 @ Sep 20 2007, 03:44 PM)
is ok. but if u are getting it, get those with small small 'bowl' one, so it won't polutted with the poo and pee. hehe....

ooo.. crazymouse, thanks ya. but one more things that i not understand, isn't that glider in nature get honey is those raw honey? since no one cook for them?  sweat.gif .... but why the internet writer suggested not give them raw honey?
*
Aiyoh, they are known as sugar gliders mah, not honey gliders heheheh.... Anyway, KP already replied why. By nature, they cannot even eat honey in the wild. They got no protective skin, nor skill to open a bee hive and if a glider gets near a bee hive, sure die liao.

This is why no raw honey. Sugar gliders get their name coz they glide and they like the sugary sap from trees. They get the sugar from plants, not bees.

QUOTE(krynzpeaches @ Sep 20 2007, 04:51 PM)
Trust me, as long as it is a bowl, it will get contaminated even tho it is small.

Try yourself and see, the next day, you will find the water clouded already. And you have to change the water everyday.

Everywhere also if you search will recommend water bottle over bowl, why do you still wanna use a bowl?

Where in the net or research that you find they feed on honey in the wild?

In the wild, they feed on tree saps and gums, fruits and insects, NO honey liao.

How the heck are suggies suppose to get the honey from the bee hive? They'll get stung by millions of bees and definitely won't  survive dey.

from another discussion board

he/she replying to sumone asking about mix and suggies food
i reply . took some info from 1st page
he'she reply .. the same one as the 1st quote
what to reply ?
*
HAhaha.... sugar glider must gesek gigi? Glider is not a hamster. Reply that:

Sugar glider is a marsupial. They eat tree sap, fruits and insects. Dogfood is hard, can cause lumpy jaw and also kidney or liver failure if the food is the low quality kind.

Bird egg.... she wants us to panjat pokok and get telur gagak? Hahaha... sorry, I can't resist it when it says birds egg. It is true that in the wild they will eat bird eggs and even baby birds.... but tak akan we wanna give that rite? Hard Boiled Chicken egg lah.... telur puyoh is too high in fats and cholesterol for gliders.

You can tell the person she/he still need to research. Best is never give dogfood. If wanna give, get the super premium quality and soak with water or juice first.

Their gigi is not like hamster or tikus, so no need to sharpen their teeth lah.... if wanna gesek gigi, might as well say give batu LOL.

QUOTE(vincent09 @ Sep 20 2007, 06:07 PM)
Just now i try feed water by using bottle, lucky Ah Pit still take some from there. biggrin.gif .  Maybe is that watermelon alot of juice.
Oh yea, maybe i know what is the problem, last time i still feed dry cat food, maybe not so much water, that's why Ah Pit will go drink water from there. Nowadays i feed mix food & fruits only. biggrin.gif
May i know guys when you let your suger glider come out, what will you do with them? Just feed food and touch touch them?
Everytime i let Ah Pit out  ( morning or afternoon ) i just touch touch her in sleeping place and let her come out move abit. ( If too long time for coming out, she will jump here jump there. Quite hard make her coming back. )  At night i make Ah Pit come out and enjoy the mix food, after that wait her pee & poo and take her back. ( After eat the mix food, Ah Pit will stone there and pee or poo.) Just like hard to let her search around for long time.
*
A glider enjoys being out and jump here and there. That is their nature. You cannot stop them from being active mah. Letting our gliders play on our body and jump here and there is good exercise and also great socializing with them.

Er just now my Ah Pit jump on the mosqito killer pad there.... if she push the button herself ..........

Maybe need to take her to somewhere is free of space let her run on floor biggrin.gif  ( run very fast )  Or i act like tree let her jump. ( just success 1 time, most of time she will jump on floor run somewhere else.)

Anything can attract suger glider for call them back? Food, fruits like no work.
*
The problem is you did not bond with your glider well. So she is more likely to run away rather than come back to you. You only make her see you as food provider, you never make her think of you as a playmate and companion..... Also, gliders are not like dogs. They will only respond and come when they want to.

Yes, acting like a tree to a glider, making them jump from 1 hand to another and letting them run up and down is the way to get along with them.

Did you play with him? Carry around is just for bonding but they need about 2 hours of play time with you. Hold, make him walk up and down.... but joeys generally sleep more.

Like Hun said, if your glider is bonded to you, they will come back to you once they are done playing or exploring.

Sometimes when thay are still exploring, they will not want to come back yet.

That's my glider's case, he'll come back once he's done playing and exploring.
Yeah, you can give them those fruit juice without added sugar or preservative for them to drink once in a while.
Haha, Chika so funny lar laugh.gif The only glider I know that likes water.

Mebbe he likes the sweet smell of Milo, that's why he doesn't want you to clean him tongue.gif

Added on September 21, 2007, 10:22 amIn response to that whoever idiotic person,
It's not that they like dog food, but they will mainly eat whatever you as owner give them.

Although they eat it, they do not know the nutritional value of the food or if it can cause harm to them. Only the owner with brains can tell. So despite knowing that dog foods are not good for them, yet you still give it, shows how much you really care towards your glider - NIL.

For calcium, don't rely on dog/cat food, the calcium content is too little to compare to actual calcium supplement. As good owners, we get them actual calcium supplement, NOT dog food.

Who the heck told you gliders need to "gesek" their teeth? They are not even close to hamster or gerbil family! If they so need to "gesek" their teeth, why would they get "lumpy jaw" condition if they eat too much hard food?? And please tell me you know what is "lumpy jaw" condition...

Yeah, whatever lah you wanna give them honey as snacks, as long as it is not raw honey and not too much of it. It can cause diarrhea to a glider, plus honey is a heaty substance, even more heaty than durian. Try consuming a lot of honey yourself and see what happens...

Honey is heaty? Aiyoh, my mom kept saying to me honey is cooling and ask me minum banyak banyak when I'm sick LOL.

QUOTE(vincent09 @ Sep 21 2007, 10:23 AM)
Hmm are you guys let your sugar glider at living room explore or outside house?  Maybe need give some toy let Ah Pit play when she coming out, because my living room just got chair, table and big spacing floor, nothing to Ah Pit jump just always run at floor and go kacau the rabbit...... Hope she won't jump into my Bo Chai storage box there biggrin.gif
*
As long not a dog kacau then ok lah. But you must make sure your room or area is glider safe. Means no windows open, no electric cable that can be easily chewed, no holes and places to hide that you cannot reach. I normally let my gliders roam my room. Once they finish exploring, they will either go back to their cage or pouch to sleep or come and climb on me.

I think the ears growth is deformed or something.... coz that really is not normal. I can see some white lining. Sometimes gliders can get short ears when the ears are either chewed off or burnt off...... the ear membrane is suppose to be very thin, never thick or rubbery.... it is more like soft skin. So if the ear membrane is thick, could be the ears stunted growth, cannot grow in length so it grows in thickness I suppose.... but over all you glider quite cute lah, just weird with ears like that. You Google, you won't find normal gliders with that kinda ears coz in the wild, being nocturnal, they need longer ears to listen to danger and night sounds.

Food is best chopped into sizes where you glider can hold in their paw..... for me, big pieces do not make my glider finish their food. They will chew what they want, then leave the rest. If I cut into small pieces that they can hold with 1 hand like holding a mealworm, then they will finish all their fruits. That's why now I got no problem feeding any fruit or vegie to my gliders.... but last time got, they won't touch alot of fruits.....

TOFU is definately NONONONO!!!!!!!!!
nowadays tofu contains lots preservative compare to last time, becuz now the tofu is not freshly made everymorning like be4  ohmy.gif
by the way, my glider loves watermelon, honeydew, and rock melon....

somemore the newspaper will be WHOLE WET in the morning, is this means they pee alot when eating this fruits? hahaha funny la  rclxub.gif
*
Coz melon got alot of water. Fruits mainly got lots of water. Mine pee alot also till now have to buy those super absorbing bedding for them hahaha.

Yups, Tofu is a no for gliders. Alot of foods gliders should not eat, best is feed them natural stuff like fruits, preservative free food and no added sugar foods.

Gliders can only drink 2 brands of milk.... First Born Puppy milk and Pets Own Lactose Free milk. Never give cows milk or goats milk.... it will make them sick coz some gliders have poor guts and cannot tolerate the 5% lactose in cow and goat milk.

Getting joeys that are not the right one for you or untame ones sure lah crab and cannot sit still. This is very normal since the suppliers cannot hold and tame for you, takes too much of their time.

Please read the 1st page. You really gotta learn that having gliders take patience. All of us here really took weeks or months to get our joeys tame. It cannot happen overnight.

QUOTE(krynzpeaches @ Oct 1 2007, 12:22 PM)
Sad as it is, if we want to save the SG,

1- We need find the money.

2- We need a proper home that is willing to care for the SG forever (No point getting him out of that junk, just to be placed in another junk right?).

3- It will somehow encourage the shop owner to sell more SG since a skinny one like that also can get sold off easily sad.gif

KP
*
Yups, agree. No matter how pitiful we find a glider at a shop, we must think of the consequences.... 1st, it would be supporting the shop. Cruel as it may seem, we have to let the SG be. If we buy, the shop will just go find another poor SG and put it for sale again till someone pity it and buy it. The circle will go on and on. Why? Because we are giving them demand and supporting them.

QUOTE(kayz1e @ Oct 1 2007, 05:17 PM)
i've been scouting around on where 2 buy SGs.. it came to my surprise when i actually found a shop that sells it for RM120ea..

so my main question is, could it be that cheap ? WHY ?
*
RM120? Should be adult lah..... if not adult, untame juvi. Shop won't sell joey at that price. It is normal for shops to sell adults below RM150. Which shop was it?

the shop that sells SGs for rm120, their size is quite big.. should be adult size, cos when i went there, all of them were sleeping...none could be seen loitering around

the shop is at petaling street... do u think its posible for me 2 purchase 2 of it, then try taming them ?
*
Ah, that shop ah... I know the owner.... better not loh. I have checked their health, not worth it. They are adults, meant for breeding purpose.

It is much better for you to save up some money, purchase 1 joey first.... or at least a sub-adult.....
