use the TNB app and monitor your daily usage since you got smart meter now. Check the meter reading, is it similar or close enough to your latest bill?

We seldom use Aircon because dry air made us suffer from eczema outbreak

That is why we are very suspicious of it, I don't know if the meter is tempered with because it's rental, but the technician didn't made noise about it like our next door neighbour, they told them up front and ask them to sign some letter which resulted in argument

Tempered got many ways one. Some are obvious some are not.

But there is a possibility that another bill is coming. They will study the bills and then they will know if it’s tempered. Nowadays they don’t need to argue with customer anymore.
They even know which road got irregular meter usage.

Before this, meter tempered? Most of the time like this.

Actually u can roughly estimate your usage based on your electrical appliances.
*
Actually it looks very suspicious.. but if on as normal using a clamp meter any electrician can check the running amps to calculate ur kW usage. the h (in kwh) sendiri kira la.

I would also suspect old leaky fridge, or high usage of electric appliances to cook or boil water, or people who like to take hour long hollywood shower. The old meter can be rather under reading for certain type of devices (resistive load in heater) as compared to inductive loads (in motors such as AC compressor)

Pretty easy if u have space in DB box. Else need to expand or branch out.

QUOTE(Solar Calendar @ Aug 10 2021, 04:40 PM)
TS, can u be more specific? Like how many fridge, whether ur light bulbs are energy efficient etc
*
Also how many kowei or kaku or NK magik kind of water heater.
Electric kettle too.

QUOTE(ujelly @ Aug 10 2021, 04:47 PM)
Light bulbs are mix mostly t8 led, with t8 fluorescent that is not used frequently.
What used frequently has been changed to led, during bulb replacement, including the removal of ballast.

Only 1 fridge
*
Lights dont consume that much, but if old non inverter fridge especially very old ones bout 20 yrs ago those really makan electric.

Yup i know it's hard to make a bill estimation
But we expect to see a drop of charges instead it increases

That made me suspicious

could be a misread of next door's meter mistakenly charged to your address.
there have been such a cases before.
unless you have no neighbour immediately next to you.

mine is reversed

at old house using old meter, average kWh is 200-300, billed rm180-rm250 monthly.

then in june i move in to new house, using smart meter. july no reader come check since the neighborhood is very new (infact only 3-4 house were occupied including mine). early aug, 1 day after i ask tnb to send meter reader, a guy (tnb meter reader) come and check the meter. but didn't leave any bill.

then i check using tnb app, shows there usage is 500+ kWH but billed only RM179.. i mean that was too CHEAP if following my previous experience. yesterday paper bill left in mailbox, and total amount need to pay is RM238 (rm179 for june usage + rm58 for july usage).

using 1 1hp aircond every night turn on 10pm-8am, then my gaming pc only off once in a week.

First 200 kwh is only 43.60. Next 100 is 33.40. Total 77.00 for residential. Total 137.90 for commercial tariff.

You are a very generous customer or is an accumulated bill.

I have been hearing all these bill spikes after changing meter and was worried myself when mine was required to change. To my surprise nothing much changed, everything is like usual. 3 people, no aircond, around RM80-90. Recently sister started WFH so only then it rose to RM100+

You can install your own meter to check TNB's meter but that is only for your own information. Don't expect to use it to challenge the bill because TNB will not accept your meter's reading. In the end you will still need to get TNB to check their own meter by making an official request at the TNB office stated in your bill.

One reason why the new smart meter may incur a higher bill is that they are more sensitive than the old mechanical meters which may not move when the consumption is below a certain threshold. However the bill should certainly not be doubled so you can suspect something is wrong. However there is also a possibility that your old meter may have been tampered with if you are not the first owner or you are a tenant.

Having a sub meter is never to challenge smart meter reading. Is an indication to inform tnb that there is an error in the reading. One has a better chance of tnb checking instead of mere lip service.

Evidence is not to challenge but to show that a person has a case for further action to be taken....similar to police reports.

That Rm10 increase at 0.338 second tier TNB rate is about 29.5unit (kwh)
say laptop use about 65W la x 8hrs x 22d is 11.44unit

rest of it (18unit) should be other stuff ur sister use that would not be used if she was in opis..like ceiling fan table fan lights etc?

Second tier tariff stops at RM77 (200 kWh * 21.8sen + 100 kWh * 33.4sen). Anything above would follow tier 3 tariff that is 51.6sen, which is the rate I'll use for this particular case since our baseline usage has already been well within this tier before the additional power usage from WFH.

Her setup is 1 laptop + 2 24" monitor. I take laptop as 30W (my gaming laptop usage when doing office work), whereas both monitors total at 40W (average consumption for the model found from web).
Lights would be 36W. Ceiling fan can be negated since otherwise she would be using it in her room.
So total extra wattage = 106W.

I think she's working longer than 8hrs x 22d but we'll just leave it at that.
0.106kW x 8hrs x 22d x RM0.516 = ~RM9.63

Pretty much tallies up despite the abundance of variables at play and estimations I have made.

Contacted electric commissioner
They came with a tnb staff and installed another meter on the MCB and another beside tnb
Well at the end of the the readings doesn't match
So they come up with a fixed amount based on my past bills
And the extra will be used to offset the future bills

But still electric commissioner want you to complaint to TNB first
Then you complaint to electric commissioner about TNB's competency

what was the difference Kwh between tnb meter and the commissioner meter
how many % usage higher . tnb vs comm meter?

so means the new tnb smart meter is faulty ?

Around 1.8 to 2 higher on the new TNB meter
TNB Said it was calibration error, not faculty

so lesson to learn is TNb smart meters are NOT error free.

whatever TNB explain is ... in short they installed a Faulty meter .
how did this escape the factory Quality test ... points to poor factory process.

my opinion . if your bill jumps more than 30 % you may have cause to complain . nod.gif
