After the price drop, I managed to get myself an Iphone !

This actually a huge leap since my last phone :

It has been like almost 3 - 4 years since my first handphone. After a long long wait, it feels so good to be able to get a sub RM1500 that won't have much better option than an iPhone.

So I don't know how to review this or anything, but for my first 10 minutes experience I shall say the activation is pretty easy and neat. Enjoy the pics !

My simple review on first few days with the iPhone:

1. software stability : so far everything is flawless. Safari works well, iPod have no complain about it. Other's such youtube, google map, weather everything works fine.

2. ease of use : This is my 2nd phone since 3 years of using the red Nokia (hav no idea what series, perhaps 6xxx ?). With my lowest knowledge in phone I still manage to figure out how to use it in minutes. So typical Apple user-friendly product.

3. signal strength : Signal strength ? the best provider in my specific place is indeed AT&T so it has been awesome. Wifi works almost everywhere I go (there are Wifi all over the place here) except for some places that doesn't have (and I will needs EDGE then). Online has never been so flexible and such addictive.

4. built and durability : So far no complain coz I got no guts to throw or do any durability test. Have seen ppl drop it tho (on concrete/tars). Nothing not even a scratch.

5. battery standby and actual usage time
: Pictures above prove this part. Rite now Usage is about 5 hours 18 minutes with batt half full or half empty. Standby total of 14 hours 46 minutes. Call Time has current period of 2 hours 37 minutes. Average max batt life was told from 6 - 9 hours of non-stop calling time.

6. screen quality : Screen is small (used to laptop) but good enuf for a phone.

7. voice call quality
: haha watch AT&T ads u will know how..

There are pros and cons but some of the cons are not even applied to me personally as I am no phone enthusiast. I will say this phone is good for common users or internet junkies; but still lacking more features for high-end phone enthusiasts. Nothing to worry, 3G iphone is coming out real soon. Seriously for me, this is more than enough and that means good news as I don't have to fork out few hundreds more (thousands RM) just for features I will never use (GPS, MMS etc). The only things that bugs me out is the ringtones. However at their site they mention that the ringtones customization will be available real soon. So I shall say this is a good buy and I am satisfied with it ( I risk it and I was really afraid that it will disappoint me, but so far it keeps on impressing me).

Special thanks to eddy230379 for the review layout

QUOTE
After numerous delays and endless cries of "hoax!", it looks like the iPhoneSIMfree iPhone unlocking software is finally available for purchase from four online retailers around the world. Wireless Imports in the US, iPhoneWorldwideUnlock in Australia, 1digitalphone in Germany, and iPhone4arab in Saudi Arabia (currently down) have all purchased bulk licenses from the iPhoneSIMfree team and are selling individual unlocks for around $100 (Update: that price is just from the US etailer, it seems; looks like the Aussies are letting it go for under 50 bucks American. Also, the Hackint0sh community is already busy at work trying to snatch these sites' code as we speak). Go nuts, and let us know your initial experiences below...

Update: The Hackint0sh guys claim they will not be reverse engineering the iPhoneSIMfree software. Ok, well, whatever.

http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/10/iphones...nlocking-begin/

Video proof

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/iphone-so...p?autoplay=true

UPDATED:

there are more and more simhacks for free out there. To name a few google iBrickr or try nullrivers.com

I won't be posting alot about that because the softwares work varies with the user self-preference. For example one who use AT&T but just want 3rd-party software like NES etc, would only need iBrickr for his/her iPhone. And just for that type of user, he/she still has options whether to choose EDGE with carrier (AT&T) or not. So that means u need to find a software to disable EDGE. I have not gotten into simhacks yet as they are useless for me for the time being; not until I need to do it that is.

Plus, the updates for Wifi stores icon is here by now so, don't know if that will caused problem for like relocking the iphone. So far I am using the iTune 7.4.2 and nothing have change by far.

It is very stable. Apple had just released iPod Touch and it's almost the same as iPhone's design infact the phone menus. Heard that we can use 3rd party iPhone apps on the iPod Touch as both runs Mac OS X and they use the same binary on those devices.

I doubt they will, as the price cut for the 4GB is due to them planning to phase out the 4GB version and stick to the 8GB version (or was it because the 8GB version is selling too well and they want to push out the 4GB stock?) ....

I forgot...

LOL

Anyways, anything that is launched officially in Msia will be overpriced biggrin.gif, especially when it comes to mobile.

u shud read more carefully. He said hope it comes with 3G, means he knows that it doesn't have for now. For that purpose it definitely come in the next gen of iPhone, maybe 2nd gen I shall say. We'll see. I have no idea how to review a phone. Anyone can come with a layout or basic that I can prolly fill in or sumthing. Seriously this is my second phone since the red phone. So I am really not a phone guy at all. I buy it bcoz I think it worth the price given its purposes and functionalities.

yeah u got that right. I actually was waiting for the next gen until they dropped the price. And when I did my own analysis and research, I think it will cost me premium price, which I feel unnecessary. Like I said before, I am no phone enthusiast, so I could use the extra hundreds buck (thousand RMs) in my other important interests that I will appreciate and utilize more.

For the price that I paid, I feel it worth every penny that it costs me.

As I was tempted and going to buy one, I was looking forward for the 4gb version. Then the sales attender somehow manage to hasut me and I fall for it. Then I go with 8gb and his mission was successful. I hope u guys like the pics added and the review. Ask anything if you like coz I have no idea what to do when it comes to phone.

I see thank u for the wish. I actually have breaking news !! here it is :

Wireless Imports in the US, iPhoneWorldwideUnlock in Australia, 1digitalphone in Germany, and iPhone4arab in Saudi Arabia (currently down) have all purchased bulk licenses from the iPhoneSIMfree team and are selling individual unlocks for around $100 (Update: that price is just from the US etailer, it seems; looks like the Aussies are letting it go for under 50 bucks American. http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/10/iphones...nlocking-begin/

to eddy230379,

I haven't try bluetooth but I played around with it yesterday. No laptop no bluetooth thing was around that time. I think I shud try on that.

Ok somehow I couldn't find video as u mention or it doesn't come with it ? Still nothing special for me, even my dslr don't have that which I feel should have that as a camera (especially when it comes with a good pixel counts). I saw my friend's O2 or something like that that he bought for like $599 - $699, the video was so-so; for the price he paid I said it sucks.

As the breaking news coming up, we shall see more ppl can use it anywhere including Malaysia. yeah !!

I see thank u for the wish. I actually have breaking news !! here it is :
http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/10/iphones...nlocking-begin/

to eddy230379,

I haven't try bluetooth but I played around with it yesterday. No laptop no bluetooth thing was around that time. I think I shud try on that.

Ok somehow I couldn't find video as u mention or it doesn't come with it ? Still nothing special for me, even my dslr don't have that which I feel should have that as a camera (especially when it comes with a good pixel counts). I saw my friend's O2 or something like that that he bought for like $599 - $699, the video was so-so; for the price he paid I said it sucks.

As the breaking news coming up, we shall see more ppl can use it anywhere including Malaysia. yeah !!

wow ... the iphone unlock tool is official ...

man ... u know what thats means ... ???

we r going to see people starting to use the iphone in malaysia in a couple of months time ...

from the reviews i have read ... the screen quality is very goodso i guess videos shouldnt be a prob ... but it depends on the video quality itself right ???

it seems that they r selling the iphone unlocking tool cheaper in australia ...

but is apple actually going to allow this ???

no lar bro ... Ap set means it is brought in to malaysia but not by authorised distributor ...

thats y AP set cannot go to original service centers to repair ... if u do send it to the original service centers for repairs they will charge u ...

AP sets r cheaper and they dont offer full warranty like lcd problems as an example ...

derred, i don't know u get urself an iphone too. I got mine 2 days ago. 8gb one. Nice heh...

my iphone is still naked. I don't wanna dress it until i found some skin that worth the iphone.

I managed to unlock it .. it took me a whole evening from zero to unlock using the newly found free software unlock.

I restored and re-unlocked like 4-5 times already. just to play with it and tried to use different sim.

I'm using regular at&t family plan (20usd permonth) instead of the one with iphone data plan(which cost around 40 permonth ). I dont use edge so much so i dont think it worth to take the data plan.

Unlock experience:
I tried to use maxis simcard after unlock. I can't even connect. maybe because it's under roaming in the US. But i manage to make my iphone work with non-iphone simcard/plan.

lol I get it like the day after the price drop. Hmm I am thinking unlocking it but definitely not now. Prolly jailbreaking first for ringtones. But I have no rush for that. Plus, I won't waste my time doing all the complicated hacking. I'll wait something simpler like iphonesimfree to be really "free". Or hand it in to u for unlocking it.

That means that he won't have EDGE and stuff. His plan will only allow him to have WiFi and normal calling times. But we don't know if he manages to hack that. How come you got all the times in the world? Ah forgot u r from S.I.T, damn u.

So ideoteque, that doesnt mean he skipped AT&T totally, he did that bcoz he still wants to use with AT&T but just the basic plan.

I am aware that he still uses AT&T plan. But do they allow us to skip the data plan and go ahead with the basic minutes. It is not a bad idea to go with that plan instead. tongue.gif

I went to the AT&T shop just to buy iphone without any plan. the next day, after i gather some friends, i opted for usual family plan (not for the iphone one). I got nokia 6126 free with the plan. then i just take the simcard from the free phone and put into the unlocked iphone.

method i use to unlock.

1. Restore to 1.02 firmware using Itunes
2. Use Ibrickr to jailbreak.
3. Use PACAY method to activate
4. Use Ibrickr again to install unlock.pxl method
5. run unlock.pxl from iphone

that's all. after u have done it once, you'll just need 5-10 minutes to unlock another iphone.

I see, it depends on usage. If ur thinking online flexibility meaning online anywhere u like so adding 20 bucks is not so bad imo.

Hmm I wonder. I just spoke to an ATT representative, she told me that iPhone cannot be purchased without 2years contract+data plan. That's weird. Maybe she's a newbie. That's interesting, though.
Thanks irwan for the steps. When I get myself an iPhone, I will get back to you for indepth instructions.

It is just a matter of time they will unlock the phone officially, $$ always is more important than partnership.....

for the Ipod part
if i sync with itunes
does it get locked back?

nope. it seems itunes doesn't care about the plan/carrier once we unlock. It even shows my phone number besides other info like imei.

what's more, at AT&T online account page, it even shows that I'm using Iphone even i'm not taking iphone plan. rclxms.gif

I like to provide my input to clarify upon information about the useability of the iPhone in Malaysia. There are quite a few iPhone users already in Malaysia, employing various methods to allow the use of the iPhone with the local telcos.

You do not need to have an AT&T contract to use the iPhone. You do not need to pay extra to purchase an unlocked iPhone - this can be done locally. All you need is to have a contact in America who can buy the iPhone and have it shipped to you. Pay extra for FedEx or UPS or DHL shipment. Do not use the normal US air-mail service, unless you want to run down to the Customs office to clear your shipment.

I have been an iPhone user for more than a month now. The results?

The iPhone cannot do MMS.

The problem of no incoming call with the Maxis network is a Maxis SIM/network problem. I have - and so have a lot of iPhone users on Maxis - raised this issue with Maxis. For the moment, there is no resolution to the problem - either Maxis is ignorant or too arrogant to consider this as a problem. Only time will tell. Consider this when you want an iPhone, especially if you cannot or will not want to switch from Maxis to another telco.

The software to activate and unlock the iPhone to use with any SIMs is freely available online.

Now there are GUI version (which is geek/hacker-proof) meaning u don't have to know stuff, all u need to know is how to follow instruction and click2. That's all. My laptop crashes and having hardware problem at the moment, so no direct link that I can give to you fer now. But google iBrickr or iphone hack or whatever. It will lead you to the solution anyway. Just be assure to ask before doing anything you are not so confident doing of. So far I tried to "hack" mine but laptop is having problem, keep getting errors. But I have no rush for simhack as I am currently using AT&T anyway, so I am settled with ringtones hack by far.

The bluetooth profile in the iPhone only allows for the pairing of bluetooth headsets. It does not pair with PCs or other phones. Not tested if it will pair with stereo headsets. There is no word from apple whether they will update their firmware to include other bluetooth profiles to work with other devices. Only time will tell.

The iPhone is intended to be a constant-on device to the internet, either through WiFi or EDGE connections. That is why when Apple signs up a new telco, one of the conditions is that they provide unlimited data connections within their plan offerings. EDGE is a data connection protocol. The brief history of data connections for mobile phones is approximately as follows;

GPSR >> EDGE >> 3G >> 3.5G (new HSDPA)

Basically, from the slowest to the fastest, in data connection speeds. EDGE on the iPhone is a constant on. It will always check for EDGE connections and WiFi, and will give priority to WiFi over EDGE, when WiFi is found. This means that, if you are not on an unlimited plan, your iPhone will send and receive data constantly. Perhaps 0.5 to 1 k every few minutes, and this will eat into your Prepaid account. Currently there is no way to completely disable EDGE - although - it is rumored that this feature will be implemented in the next iPhone firmware update coming soon. For the moment, entering a wrong APN name will disable EDGE of sorts.

I have been looking for the software that could disable edge on hackintosh but couldnt find textedit thingy. Tried other things such as deedge which i found on google website, but had a problem half way through.
can anyone give me a specific url? Thanks.
(I'm typing using my iphone hehe its pretty neat)

Added on September 22, 2007, 10:26 pmNevermind, I found a way to disable EDGE.
Just for future reference, whoever unlocks his iPhone and refuses to subscribe to any data plan, you might want to disable EDGE on your iPhone so that they won't ridiculously charge you per kb of data sent and received from your iphone.

The steps:

Using any GUI (contohnya Ibrickr atau textEdit on your iPhone.

1. Open /var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist in your editor (Notepad) of choice.

2. Look for the string "apn". This will be followed by "wap.cingular".

3. Delete the "." in "wap.cingular".

4. Restart the phone.

5. When you try to connect via EDGE, it will fail.

6. To reinstate EDGE service, open the file again and insert the "." between "wap" and "cingular", then restart the phone.

The end. Phew, now I can do my homework and watch football.

Incoming calls being blocked may not be Maxis' fault. My wife's Hong Kong SIM card, which is 3G, doesn't receive calls either when used on iPhone. I have 2 iPhones here in Penang. We played around with the SIM cards from Maxis, Digi, CSL from Hong Kong. Only Digi can fully utilise all the functions of the iPhone, except the visual voicemail. We switched cards between iPhones, a Nokia and a Razr. Since iPhone is a 2.5G phone only, maybe 3G services do play havoc with the iPhone. Don't blame Maxis. Customers of Maxis can receive calls if they don't use iPhones to do it.
Anyway, I use Digi, so it works for me. Unless I can find a Maxis SIM with no 3G activated yet, it just might work. I'll keep you guys posted.

I`m still wondering would the newly released firmware automatically install itself to the iphone when it connects to the Internet as most MAC systems do. Since I`m not a Mac user, I can`t say I know for a fact but some ppl have been telling me that certain critical files don`t even ask u for permission to download and execute. If that`s the case, with the new as-yet-unhackable firmware, wouldn`t it lock the phone again .... especially since Apple is sure to learn about the hacking of its previous firmware.

hi there. There is no short answer for that and if there is one, it won't be do any good just in matters of days. Right now the topic is so hot there are several ppl bricked their iPhone, so my suggestion would be keep on track with the news. You can always keep urself update @ gizmodo or engadget.
