QUOTE(boca120879 @ Oct 8 2020, 08:42 PM)
Assalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh to Muslim
& Good day to the rest
Muslims cannot say assalamualaikum to Nons? Need to have separate greeting for Nons?

I was in UAE before they simply say assalamualaikum to everyone though?

Just curious.

The origin of the phrase is from the Semitic languages and is found in both the Hebrew bible and the Talmud. In short, it's a common greeting for Semitic people. However, after the Arabs adopted Islam it came to be identified with Islam. In Malaysia it is exclusively identified with Muslims as they're the only who ones who think to use it. In truth, it's just a neutral Arab greeting.

The reason the phrase is structured that way it's because normally only Muslim will know what does it mean.

It's like you are talking publicly and then you said
"ni hao to the Chinese"
you add chinese in this sentence because normally only chinese know ni hao.

Its a religious greeting to begin with.

I won't expect nons to say "om shanti om" to me or any other religious greeting.

What's wrong with salam sejahtera/selamat pagi?

Both assalamualaikum or walaikumsalam are ok.
https://islam.stackexchange.com/questions/2...ssalamu-alaikum

However, if you do not know the other party here in Malaysia, better to keep quiet.

One fella took a plane from UAE.
Its normal for pilot to greet and inform the passengers before flight, and he was speaking Arabic.
Fella kelantan thought the pilot was chanting doa and lifted his palm. sweat.gif

I think the full greeting which includes the All mighty blessings is a no no. Just the first part peace be upon you is fine. I did a one month stint in Dubai before and got so used to it I came back saying it for a while haha

Inb4 cultural appropriation
