When it comes to erotica, the raunchiest sex scenes tend to be inspired by the writer's bedroom fantasies: be it the sex scenes in Bridgerton (yes, they still live rent-free in our heads) or the intimate moments from the best romcoms over the years. So you can imagine our surprise (and envy) when we found out that Netflix's Sex/Life is actually based on true events?

The steamy new series dropped on the streaming service in late June and has got a lot of viewers hot and bothered thanks to its whirlwind of out-of-the-box sex scenes. The series follows Billie (played by Sarah Shahi), a stay-at-home mum who is bored to death of her middle-class suburban life in Connecticut with her husband, Cooper (Mike Vogel) and their two kids. She begins to lust for her previous sexual adventures with ex-boyfriends, earning for the passion-filled life she once, prompting her to start reminiscing about her wildest sexual experiences in a journal. We're talking carefree, spontaneous encounters with a punk rocker at a concert, quickies in a car and a swimming pool sessions with music label heads - all of which are apparently inspired by real life events.

That's right. The sex scenes on the show are a re-enactment of BB Easton’s 2016 novel 44 Chapters About 4 Men. The diary-style novel, which is actually more of a memoir, follows a school psychologist and mother of two who begins writing her deep and dark sexual fantasies in her journal after her handsome but incredibly dull husband can't seem to satisfy her. In fact, he does quite the opposite.

Speaking to Oprah Daily, the author explained that journaling her longing for a thrilling sex life helped her through a mid-life crisis. "That was the most cathartic experience for me,” she recalled. “It helped me form a bridge between my current life and the girl I used to be. I was living my current life but I was writing about all these fun experiences and it helped me feel like I was the same person."

On the show, it doesn't quite work out like that for Billie, who ends up blowing up her life with her family to light an old flame with her bad boy ex, Ken. But as Bling Empire's Anna Shay would say, "there ain't no d*ck that good" so could she have made a huge mistake? We'll find out (hopefully) in season 2 of Sex/Life.
