Looks like this phone is under rated or it's not getting the attention it deserves ?!

Are there are any owners out there who have issues with the finger print scanner?

It's not the best but it's "OK"

The moment we apply a screen protector, it becomes from "Just OK" to BAD. it does not work 99% of the time even after we register our new finger print after applying a new protector.

I tried both hydrogel and tempered glass. Tempered glass is a little better but it's still horrible. It simply cannot detect my finger print.

I'm OK using the face detection but I need finger print to work to access the banking apps.

Sometimes I feel they shd just use the "tested and proven" method by having a physical finger print scanner by the side or back. I never had a single issue using phones with this type of scanners.

I'm just thinking of removing the screen protector altogether. It has Gorilla glass Victus and I think it shd be fine with some care from the end user side.

What brand of screen protector are you using and are you successful in getting your finger print recognized?

Damn... i just gave up on these screen protectors.

So I've tried hydrogel and tempered glass, it cannot detect my finger print easily.

I'm using it without screen protector.

I need convenience to access my online banking and other apps which rely on finger print.

Get a case that has a raise around the perimeter of the sides.

I'm using the free Rhinoshield case. The perimeter is raised. Don't think that influences the in display finger print sensor.

It's more of a screen protector issue that is affecting the sensitivity of the finger print sensor. Do you know of a compatible screen protector which you could recommend ?

No need screen protector if we use that raised case. The screen will not be affected on drop impact unless a debris of sand or metal or hard sharp object direct hit the screen.

So, without screen protector the FP reader works fine without issues?

If still insisted on TG, usually me will get Nillkin as 1st choice. If not available, try "Gor" for less than RM30 (two pieces)

On the other hand, "some" TG is compatible with the FP sensor as below:

Me believe it is due to how we "register" them. Kindly try to delete and re-register again but this time place the finger for two seconds before lifting to proceed until 100% mark.

Yeah without SP, it is OK. I'll have to be honest there that it doesn't quite match the sensitivity of a physical side or back mounted FP sensor, but it is acceptable.

Frankly, i prefer usability over the cool factor. Anytime i'll vote for a physical FP sensor. I've used so many of them and they are just so reliable.

Yep a Rhinoshield case comes with the phone during the "promo" period.

Yep no SP for me. The case does a good job, just have to watch out for the point you mentioned above. I think it should be fine.

Yeah I saw that video, not sure what TP he was using but by the shape of the cut out I can see it's not for the Zenfone.

Thanks for the recommendation and tips, maybe I'll try that Nilkin or Gor someday. thumbup.gif

8 flip i also tested a bit but way not as nice as the 8 mini haha. The FP on the 8 flip is terrible when i use. 10 time unlocking 2 time manage to get thru. Then phone is really heavy and uncomfortable for my use. I feel the s21u and rog 5 also better in a way. I was using the z7 pro and z6 before too.

Ya Rhinoshield case comes with it haha as freebies but put liao hard to take out a bit sweat.gif i prefer the 1 that comes in the box good quality case also. The 8 flip FP i find really has some big issue leh. try unlocking 10 times 8 or 9 time fail me haha. Where as the mini 8 is easier to unlock. But also will fail 1 or 2 times with my use.

Nice video!

Battery performance is mediocre.

I disable the always on display, use the phone at 90Hz and enable dark mode.

Sometimes I think what's the use of flagship features when you cannot enjoy it.

Unfortunately the less than satisfactory battery performance of this phone limits us from enjoying its features to its max. All the more, I set max charge at 90% and don't dip below 10% to protect the battery. This means I only have roughly around 80% of "usable" charge of this already small battery. So nothing great when it comes to battery.

Battery and finger print sensor aside, I think it's a great phone and I really love it's simple, unassuming and compact design. It kind of match my personality. Simple and err.... boring.

hence i said even tho it's flagship performance pls dont play games on it. I use it for photos and messaging because the small size is damn comfy. Dark mode is definitely essential. I dont think i know many people who still use light mode.

Just wondering, does the latest ZenUI (Android 11) still maintain the Auto Call Recording function? This is one of the sales point from me's point of view...

For me if it's very heavy usage, I need to top up.
I stop using at 10% and charge to a maximum in of 90%, so that's even less amount of juice I have.

No problem for me. Both ok. Anyone else have issues?

I had an issue where sometimes the phone charges to 100% eventhough I set to 90%. Not all the time, just happened twice so far.

Actually, I'm impressed with the stereo speakers in the Zenfone 8. Such a small phone can pack good quality speakers. These speakers can output some decent mid range and maybe some bass. I read somewhere it is powered by a Cirrus Logic chip.
All other phones which I have used, even iPhones have very annoying high pitch screeching trebles without any mid range and no bass.

Hey bro, thanks for this. Ya I noticed that but had some doubts. Is that particular seller official Realme MY? I thought the official store is realme_os and not realmeaiot.my?

Does it come with built in dual app feature like MIUI? Can 'clone' most app, 2 instances such as 2 WhatsApp.

Any disadvantages for this phone? Digi support volte for zenfone 8?

Currently the price go down to just 1999. Really makes me regret buying SE2 a month ago.

I've set charging limit to 80%, so going down to 16%, it is 65% total usage. This much usage gives me 4h 50m SoT.
If you do the math, 100% usage should give you around 7h. This is pretty consistent with a lot of reviewers too.
I provided the AccuBattery numbers as well in case anyone is interested, though I'm aware AccuBattery is not accurate.

After watching many reviews, I can tell you that XDA Developers' lengthy written review is the one that most accurately described the phone. They even got worse battery endurance because they have 5G. I kinda regret not reading it first. Some popular YT reviewers can be misleading.

The auto refresh-rate in this phone is not up to my expectation. From the looks of it, S21 has the best adaptive refresh rate, followed by realme GT. As for iPhone 13 Pro, their ProMotion is also facing issues that should be fixed in a later update.

In the end, I set my screen to a constant 90Hz. Going to 120Hz should lose only several minutes of SoT because brightness, background processes, always-on display and usage habits play a bigger part. Since it is hard to tell the difference, I decided to stay with 90Hz.

ZenFone 8 is a decent buy, provided you are keen to tweak the device, and backup your data regularly. I followed the advice to disable some of the battery optimization settings that did more harm than good, manually prevented a few apps from auto-start, set dark mode, adaptive brightness, but left always-on display enabled. The always-on customization is disappointing. Good news is Android 12 will come included with better always-on display themes, but not sure how long we need to wait, unless we enroll as beta tester.

This is not a Samsung or iPhone that you can just leave all your trust blindly to what their default settings will do for you.

Anyway, compared to the competitors in this compact flagship segment:

- S21 - If it comes with SD888, it will be an easy decision, but Exynos... and the limited stock.

- iPhone 13 - Best gaming performance in this form factor, but still don't have always-on display. Already so expensive, yet still need to top up to Pro model for 120Hz ProMotion and better battery endurance.

- iPhone 12 - Price didn't really drop that much. 60Hz.

- Xperia 5 iii - So expensive, might as well buy iPhone.

- Xperia 5 ii - Local official stores still putting high price.

If the screen on time is important, consider iPhone 13 Pro or a bigger phone.

Nice detailed review. I just want a small android phone, but most androids now are 6.5" brick. Too big for me.

Currently I'm using iphone SE2. I can get 4 hours screen on time from 80% down to 20% or 5-6 hours from 100% to 20%. I thought that the zenfone 8 would have double the battery life with its 4000mah battery. sweat.gif Guess I have to stick with this iphone then.. the battery is stupidly small, but I can easily charge the phone from anything and it consistently charges 50% in 30 minutes. And for some reason I didn't notice the Sony Xperia 10 III before purchasing this SE2... really regretting my purchase here lol.

When it comes to iPhone, it's never a straight comparison because their OS are so efficient.

You can try looking at Kimovil website. Can sort phone models by battery score. However the database may be outdated. For example, both S21 and ZenFone 8 in Malaysia have prices slashed by RM500 recently.

Yes, Xperia 10 iii should get the job done if you don't need gaming performance.

We may like it in the 1st 12 months. After that, tethering to powerbank will make us hate small form factor...(?). Soon, when 3G is abolished, the small form factor is the worst to take the hit, especially dual-SIM mode...

Hi Just wanted to share.

For those of you struggling to get the finger print sensor to work after applying a SP, don't worry. There is a SP available (both in Clear and Matte) and it works flawlessly with the Zenfone 8. It's dirt cheap too!

PET films and hydrogel films are all compatible with FP sensor (Optical scanners and Ultrasonic scanners).

The issue will be significant if applying tempered glass.

https://zentalk.asus.com/en/discussion/5271...ng-full-ramdump

Was tempted to buy this phone from direct d RM 1900.

But theres a few issues
Ramdump (bricking the phone at unexpected times)

Optical FP scanner not as reliable as ultrasonic or conventional physical FP scanner

Top portion of the phone heats up quite quickly (tested in direct d outlet today, it heated up while i was exploring the menu etc.., online forum does mentioned it as well)

Auto refresh rate is not as adaptive.

Almost clicked on the buy button on direct d.. i think the major concern is the ramdump issue.. The only fix as for now, seems to be replacing the mother board.

It is risk you have to take because the closest competitor at this compact form factor is 50% more expensive. Are you willing to lose all your precious data and miss the phone for a few days while it gets repaired, in exchange for saving RM1k? Personally, I wouldn't have taken the risk, because I could actually afford a more expensive phone model (just didn't think those were worth it, e.g. iPhone still doesn't get always-on display) and I'm not getting good vibes about Asus aftersales service in Malaysia. I didn't read the forums before I purchased. Now I know it is inevitable, though thus far I have taken the phone to three road trips and it survived being on GPS and plugged to the car charger, etcetera. Anyway, nobody knows the specific usage patterns to accelerate that problem. It happens to any unit after around two to five months. It could be various problems but all with the same "matrix screen" symptom because perhaps this is the only way this phone knows how to react to any kind of failures.

FP is also indeed a problem. I am already familiar with its "sleepy mood" now and seemed to have found out that I could overcome it by waking the screen first before scanning. The entire week being on road trips, I only had to input my passcode once. I have my right-thumb prints set up twice. Left-thumb set up once.

I watched Twitch for two hours, it certainly doesn't heat like that. Certainly not by exploring menus only. I think that display unit didn't have the latest updates.

Yes, that Auto refresh rate is an imposter. All it does is setting itself to either 60 or 90Hz depending on the app. However, I've been using fixed 90Hz mode and still getting 6~7 hrs screen-on times.

Thanks for your feed back.. I appreciate it.

I really almost bought it yesterday, rm 1900 is just too hard to resist for a sd888 device with 120hz display.
Tbh i can live with the fp scanner being that unreliable. But the ramdump is such a turnoff zz. I guess i am going with samsung s21 at 2k+..

Btw if you leave 120hz on with always on display 'on', can it last a full day for you?

The ram dump problem is something I'm concerned of. I just hope it doesn't happen to me, or if it does, hope it happens during the warranty period. They have rolled up some software updates recently to fix the system stability issues. Hope it's fixed.

I dislike the battery life the most. Sometimes, even setting it at 90Hz, I cannot get one full day of use and I have to top up in between.

You're right - it would be ideal if the phone can just shuffle between 60Hz and 90Hz to save battery power.

The optical FP scanner works just fine for me, no issues with that.

Other than that, I don't think you can find a small, simple phone in the market in this price range.

I really love how the phone looks (simple) and the size of it and Zen UI is as close to stock Android without any bloat wares..

Roughly I can guess where you are buying that. I also tried to buy S21 US/China model but stock didn't arrive after one month until I had to initiate refund and settled for Asus instead. I think global chip shortage heavily affected shipments from US. Many of them in the hunt for xmas gifts since September.

Difference between 90Hz and 120Hz probably just several minutes. I recorded two usages of going from 90% battery level down to 10%. On both usages, Dynamic mode and all battery/power optimization settings turned off unless stated.

First picture shows more aggressive usage of driving to and hanging out in a mall, with GPS and streaming music over mobile data for over an hour while in the car. Turned off Adaptive Battery (Limit battery usage for infrequently used apps). Notice that Lazada is a very poorly optimized app.
With 4h 34min screen-on time for 80% drain, doing the math should estimate to 5h 42min for 100% drain.

Second picture shows more conservative usage of watching youtube videos and general surfing over wifi at home, with much lower brightness. I also disabled Lazada from auto-start. Turned on Adaptive Battery.
With 6h 13min screen-on time for 80% drain, doing the math should estimate to 7h 46min for 100% drain.

I doubt turning off Adaptive Battery and higher refresh rate impacted the times. It should be more heavily impacted by mobile data connection, brightness, and poorly optimized apps. Moving forward, I will even keep the 120Hz setting.

So far I haven't received Android 12 update notification on my phone yet but you can download and update manually I believe.

I'll just wait for the update once it's officially available.

I already upgrade to Android 12. Download it from Asus Singapore website.

Put it on root of your file... And restart your phone. It will automatically detect it and update your phone

Thanks for the guidance smile.gif

I'm in the process of upgrading now.

For others you may refer to this faq on how to save the file to the root.

Already upgraded to Android 12 manually.

Smoother too. Noticed that when using GPS via Waze Google Maps, its gets warm which is good, which done the same with Mi 11, damn its HOT and its shows Warning Sign that device is Hot.

now just monitoring on battery life.

mine is generally OK. occasionally, it lags when i am launching the mysejahtera app and made me annoyed. it has a SD888 and this shouldn't happen.
maybe it could be an issue with the app rather than the phone itself.

Anyone had overheating issues when making calls over a long period of time? Mine overheated and shut off itself after just 30-ish minutes on a phone call. Zenfone 8 (8GB+128GB) with latest Android update, ultra durable mode on too. Just used for 2 weeks plus. cry.gif cry.gif

If "bricked" due to hardware failures (eg. mobo, screen), for sure under warranty...

But bricked due to OTA is very unlikely....

Asus doesn't have extended warranty... so, better get Sammy if we worry about durability and after-sales services for 24-month...

currently using OnePlus 6 (4 years old), but last week bricked (Qualcomm Crash Dump mode). sent for diagnose see whether can fix or not. If cant, have to buy new phone.

now temporary using oneplus 1 (8 years old) while waiting for OP6 update. In between OP1 and OP6, i had the blackberry Priv, kind of 'cool' phone.

Just 10 months old.
1 month in the service centre and still waiting for spare parts.
Finger print sensor hardware faulty.

256/16GB Zenfone 8 user here since Jan 2022. Currently suffered with fingerprint slow / not matched (especially on public / crucial time vmad.gif), voice call issue (using Digi, no VoLTE sad.gif), and recent face unlock issue after latest OTA (kinda fixed, but temporary). None of this issues occured with my old 2013 and 2017 phone.

Too bad since I really like this phone so much: compact size, great price/performance, sd888, big storage, overkill RAM, decent camera, 3.5mm jack, IP68, stereo speakers, aptX, big battery, FM radio, notification LED... cry.gif

Got other issues as well:
- Smart Lock (Trusted places) always not working, combined with fingerprint and face unlock issues makes this more stressful
- Accidental touches while in pocket, even when Pocket Mode enabled (happened few times and there's one time it accidently shared my destination to multiple WhatsApp groups via Waze doh.gif )
- "Hey Google" to wake Google Assistant sometimes not working

Currently selling this phone. Hesitated, but yeah I can't tolerate it any longer. bye.gif

The only device that I'm currently looking to replace with is S22 256GB (not S22+ / ultra) due to it's compact size and overall similar/better spec, though I'm still missing some features from Zenfone 8 e.g. no 3.5mm jack, a bit smaller battery, no aptX, smaller RAM (though 16GB is indeed overkill lol laugh.gif). Any other recommendation? Or should I hold a while until those major issues fixed? hmm.gif

the finger print slow / not match - this is because of your screen protector.

you may search this thread, i posted a link where you can buy a suitable SP.

After using this SP it works like a charm.

I didn't use screen protector.

The fingerprint issue is random, sometimes it is really fast but other times it's slow / not matched.

I've searched around and one of the suggestion is to add same fingerprint multiple times, still same result. sad.gif

Before selling the device, try hard reset it 1st.

Backup all data to GDrive ---> Hard reset.

DO NOT restore from that backup. Start with fresh new setups. Check for latest OS/firmware updates. Next, install all vital apps and test for 7 days. If there is no improvement or bugs still exist, sell it off...

Yup, already did this. Those issues happened from earlier days which is before upgrading to A12. So when I received the OTA, I factory reset the phone and download important apps only. No improvement. laugh.gif

The fingerprint issue, Smart Lock, Google Assistant (not to mention the VoLTE issue, but it's different story) still there before and after upgrading & reset.

Well, the issues are not frequently triggers though so I can still use the phone as normal, but it annoys me when it does especially during crucial times.

Might test again later once I received the new phone.

If we wanna be on the safe side and receive full features of the device, invest on Galoxxx series...

Galoxxx series have 4 years major OS OTAs. So, if 5G is going to "really" happen within 4 years, we are surely be able to enjoy 5G (if it's affordable...)

Could you recommend me a SP which works well with the fingerprint scanner?

I tried a few but it does not detect my finger print.

If you have the link to purchase it do share with me.
*
mmm...i dont have any SP for now and dont think will apply one. my previous Oneplus 6 was on stock SP (i think just a normal film) since day one. no problem until it died on me.

for me, good case and higher all round bezel tat covers the screen and corners is minimum la.

I didn't use screen protector.

The fingerprint issue is random, sometimes it is really fast but other times it's slow / not matched.

I've searched around and one of the suggestion is to add same fingerprint multiple times, still same result.  sad.gif

Surprisingly mine has no issue with the fingerprint scanner. Could it be your finger is oily or too dry?

QUOTE(cschuang @ May 26 2022, 02:55 PM)
Any owner out there is happy with this phone with no major complains?

Still keen to buy this phone....but....
*
My major complain is the lack of high quality thin case. I mean really thin, carbon fibre case. This actually slightly negates the compactness of this phone.
Another thing is, the UI is not as smooth as I liked. It has micro stutters from time to time. Not sure it's because I use the lowest power CPU setting (manual).

mine, so far no issue on the fingerprint.

called asus hotline, for any phone repair, have to go to lowyat service centre, other centres not be able to service. sending my device to replace the camera lens glass, hopefully wont take long and not cut throat since got no choice. barely 2 weeks old phone.

...once in a while, on chrome, screen freeze when browsing...swipe also not moving, dont know wat is the problem, chrome or the software, or touch screen or ram issue....

Chrome has been problematic for some
Better use alternative browser in this case

Definitely not since the display was clean without oily smudge when repeatedly tested. Heck, oily finger was obviously my first assumption lol so I've ensured that was not the reason. laugh.gif
Yes, the issue still occurs randomly regardless in dry or wet condition.

Since most of us didn't have similar issues like mine so most likely defect I guess. A bit unlucky here since the sensor is not straight away broken but random, so it's difficult to prove for warranty claim. Even my new Samsung S22 with their inferior ultrasonic fingerprint sensor compared with most optical under display sensors is way better detection rate than my Zenfone 8, so that's should tell something. rolleyes.gif

Honestly i wouldnt even mind if the finger print sensor was at the back or side.
These traditonal sensors are way better than the so called sophisticated under display sensors.I have a hard time finding a suitable SP and my sensor developed a hardware failure once.

gotten back my phone yesterday. replaced with new LCD cover (back cover with glass lens cover & flash light set), cost RM164. So far, so good. I guess got ready stock for LCD cover, thus repair time less than a week.

BTW, what is your latest firmware number? 31.1010.0410.72 ?

I set mine to auto. With auto or 60hz you have more than enough juice to do what you mentioned above.

Too expensive to justify to be honest. At that price point, I expect it to be near perfect, at least matching the S22 bezel uniformity, tele lense and wireless charging.

oh ya, i checked website for update log for zenfone 6 released in 2019... only 2 years supported. lol. thought it was 3 years.

but then again, it's not like the phone stopped functioning after 2 years. hmm.gif i used budget redmi before this, so it doesn't seem to be that bad.

Hey all. Wanna ask about the Zenfone 8. Wanna pull the trigger coz of of the price but saw the ramdump problem popping up when searching for common problems. Does the problem still exist? And is it covered under phone warranty?

Using for a year already. No issues.

Pocket-friendly. Let's you set charging limit to 80 or 90 percent, so I can hook it up to my wired Android Auto without worrying about over-charging. Since upgrading to Android 12 the RAM consumption reduced. Never used more than 5GB RAM so I think the 16GB option is a waste for non-gamers.
