Because its easier to get start up financing there. You pitch a good idea and people will invest.

Pitch a good idea in malaysia amd people will say property is better, or ask for ponzi game 'guaranteed returns'.

Because SG practically has the same culture as us just under a different government, with a shared history. Australia and Japan is not the same. Different mindset.

The “protek” / quota mindset (for funding) is killing our startup ecosystem

Temasek be like “yes, good idea, come to SG and we will fund you”

Have you realized that all the e-commerce companies are from Singapore? Carousell, Qoo10, Lazada, Shopee, Zalora etc. Why?

I know Indonesia has Tokopedia, but they don't seem to be influential or even well-known outside of Indonesia. Meanwhile companies such as Shopee are present even in countries outside of Asia. It's like they are trying to compete with Amazon as an alternative in the long-term.

Should Malaysia also have an e-commerce company just to serve our interests, both as customers and sellers? Why rely on Singaporean companies? All we're doing is propping up their fintech economy at our expense.

malaysia doesnt really have a culture of angel investing. many years back the govt introduced tax incentives for angel investors, but there's really not a lot of them. start-ups need capital, but need to have the stability of having the funds locked in a few years at least, and if you can provide industry advice then even better.

malaysians tend to have a different outlook. "how can i make as much money, in as little time, with the least effort". i suppose you can kinda look at all those 'money game' ponzi schemes as a sort of start-up, then in that case malaysians really like those.

Grab from Malaysia, they moved to SG.

Nope. Myteksi founded in malaysia. Teksi ppl say they stealing money boycott.
Ask khazanah for investment tak ada bumiputera director and no future.
Grab was founded in Singapore after getting financing for temasek.

GrabTaxi initially applied for financial grant from Khazanah Nasional, the sovereign wealth fund of the government of Malaysia. However, long internal checks and processes had caused Khazanah did not agree on a deal.[32] It was the Singapore government investment fund Temasek that had agreed to finance US$10 million into Grabtaxi. In the same year, the company moved its headquarter from Malaysia to Singapore.

i suppose that is a consideration when you want to get listed, but they would be injecting capital just the same as other non-bumi investors.

main issue is it doesnt even get to the stage of listing. even asking people to invest in an unlisted company is difficult. that's why there's a common theme of successful start-ups - they come up with an idea, go to cradle to get a grant, tap a rich relative for more funding, then when that's done go to singapore for more funding.
