I open this topic coz all the threads regarding this topic are old. I'm a matriculation(module 2) graduate receiving a pointer of 3.17. I'd like to take Bachelor in Software Engineering at UPM. I'm kinda in a dilemma in choosing uni coz it's my dream to go to research unis and not the other unis.

So, any experienced ones who could share the minimum CGPA to successfully enter UPM for bachelor in software engineering? Or other research unis like um, usm, utm for that matter? I know that people say it's luck when it comes to UPU application. But I just wanna make sure that I make the best decision for my UPU choices.

Can you define what's Research University? What effect does it have on you?

During my time, I do have the mindset, I would prefer to go to recognized local Uni, with the lowest fees. Since I'm Bumiputera, I went to UiTM.
I have been working with a lot of graduates from local, private, overseas, nothing much different, most important is their attitude.

With your current CGPA, I believe you will be selected, but yeah, to which Uni, it depends on the systems

Well, Research University is UM, UPM, UKM, USM, UTM. I wanna study in these unis 'cause well, it's better, have multicultural environment and the graduates employability also good. And it's great for you to study at UiTM. But for me, even though I'm Bumi, I want multiracial uni maybe cause I've lived that way. Yeah, but I'm still not sure if I can secure a place there, given my pointer.

If you said you want to go to the local university because of the multiracial or multicultural, it's fine. I'm living with a diff culture/race environment as well, but so far no issue for me when studying there. Now working with MNC, managing project for local and overseas clients. Oh BTW, I took an AI course.
All local university has a very good employability rate, no worry. Ensure the result, minimum second class upper. For your case, since you want to join UPM, haha just pray for the best.
I'm not sure these tips still can be used or not, because been use this 10yrs back.
Call UPM Admission department/faculty, and say you are eagerly to join their uni/faculty

UPM is considered ok not bad la. If you're from KL, considered not bad, located around Seri Serdang.
Soon to have MRT to the campus soon.
Serdang is a nice place to stay.

I personally have a Tuition Teacher who works at the CS dept. there.
It isn't as bad as you think.

If not mistaken UPM ranking also not considered too bad in contrast to UTM USM UKM.

Hey, I replied you in another thread but I've updated my source.
For STPM, what I know is only 3.9-4.0 for software eng... If it's other CS courses like multimedia, will be lower...
So I'm not sure about matrikulasi...

If you're looking for multiracial environment and all that, UPM is basically 90% bumi, and 10% rest for majority of the courses
But I agree you should aim for RU

Rankings wise don't fret about it too much cuz personally I don't think there's any difference LOL
I think RUs are quite similar, and may have an edge in reputation... they're alright

Location wise, UPM is great. Foods nearby, there are also shopping mall nearby. Best of both world.
However, public transportation sucks, only until 2022. Imagine without MRT, you will be stuck with KTM

I guess that there are more opportunities of being offered grant to continue Master's/PhD in RU than non-RU.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Am offered to continue Master's, but still contemplating on whether wanting to do it or not.

By the way, instead of looking at universities, why not look at the curriculum of the courses from each universities?
My only regret was not analyzing the curriculum before applying. UM has the best CS curriculum among all RUs. They offered a few more subjects on mathematics, which could help in AI and ML.

3.17? UKM is the best bet for you lol.
UPM and UM is kinda risky. Could try apply to USM, not guaranteed though.

Related to your Master offered, I think it depends on what career you would like to pursue.
If you would like to be a lecturer, researcher, then go for it.
If you think by having a master will be increasing your possibility to get a job in the IT industry, you should re-think. It doesn't help much.

Meh, the idea of having more opportunities with a Master's degree haven't really crossed my mind. There are a lot of things I felt that I have yet to learn.

I kinda want to learn more about AI and Deep Learning through Master's Degree though, research-based.
So far, based on my research on academic staffs in M'sia, I don't think M'sia is good in AI/ML subjects. Well, this doesn't mean that those researchers are not good or bad.
Just that their research doesn't really interest me at the moment, except a few researchers which I am genuinely interested in.

I am looking into transfer learning and reinforcement learning researches at the moment. Also, in Generative Adversarial Network researches. Am excited on what can GAN do.
Instead of sticking with computer vision, I am looking to expand my knowledge in NLP + machine learning.
