I think you will have to get referred to PPUM, then get an appointment with a specialist there. With the appointment, then you can go to the police station and get a cross border permit for the required number of days in PJ.
However, I'm not sure about the hotel room part, got to check if any are open.

But why? If you have to come back for multiple visit, imagine travelling every 2 weeks from PJ to Kedah.
Also now no hotels are open other than for quarantine.

PPUM Specialist Clinics DONT accept a referral from outside for walk-in unless is an emergency.

You need to see the outpatient clinic (RUKA) first and the dr will treat the patient first. Only if the dr find it necessary, then only he will refer the patient to the Specialist. Otherwise, the patient will be cont treated at RUKA.

If you are refering to UMSC, then is like normal private hospital.

PPUM Specialist Clinic is a clinic within PPUM and is not the same as UM Specialist Clinic. One is semi govt, the other is private.

Patients seek treatment at PPUM Ruka is similar to any govt hosp. The different is the crowd due to limitation of patients.

Have to go early to collect the Q number for those without appointment. Limited numbers due to half day consultations. Afternoon is for patients with appointment and NO walk-in allowed.

During Covid, only patients seeking treatment are allowed to go in. Patients who are old and need physical support from caregiver are allowed.

I am not sure the seriousness of your mother medical condition but if you are from outstation and without ready accommodation and seeking long term treatment, I advise you to reconsider as it will NEVER be a 1 time consultation. The waiting time for next appointment or surgery can be long due to the numbers similar to govt hosp or it can be within days or weeks if the dr see is urgent.

Since all my previous tests/procedures are not urgent, I can wait. I also do my yearly check there. My records with them are more than 20 years.

The cost of seeking there is nevertheless cheaper than private. A Ruka consultation is RM5 and Specialist is RM30 (previously RM15) exclude medication and other tests. Overall is still cheap.

I just did a minor operation for my triggered finger there for RM180. Private is RM3k+ and I have medical insurance which I can claim but because of the compulsory covid test, I opt for PPUM. I waited 2 months for the surgery date.

My yearly check up appointment will be next month. 1 week b4 dr appointment, I have to go for blood and urine collection. There are always travelling to and fro including medication collection.

Her case is not critical...

But, we need to seek a better opinion. And PPUM is maybe more professional....

If you are going for 2nd opinion, you must decide whether you want to do follow-up treatment.

1st consultation will not yield any result as patient is required to go for basic blood and urine test. Results are not immediate unless urgent casses. This will take several days or week. While waiting, are you gonna travel to and fro or stay at hotel ?

As for my trigger finger operation, I have to see the dr at Ruka first. He will then refer me to ortho specialist dept and will schedule another date to see the specialist. After seeing the specialist, I will be given another date for the surgery. All iin, the whole duration from start to finish is 4.5 months.

2nd opinion is not helpful to dr in another hospital without a full medical report (test included) and you cant tell the dr that another dr says is this and that. Every dr treats patient differently.

A patient can see few drs for opinions but normally the last dr is the one a patient will seek treatment as he is too confused and tired with the medical jargons and time.

The thing you must know in PPUM specialist clinic is that one is not necessary be treated by the same dr for every visit. From seniors to juniors, they work on rotation basis. You dont have the personal touch similar to private. I have seen a specialist b4 as young as my children.

For your mother case, if cost is a factor, I suggest you can consider UMSC. Is cheaper than other private hosp. The drs are all seniors from PPUM specialist clinics. Some are retired thou. Medical procedures like operations, Xray, scan or whatever are still done in PPUM. The different is time ... things can be done faster because of cost.

Having said that, the cost of travelling and lodging is enough to pay for another private consultation in your hometown or Penang which is nearer. If your are from Seremban or Ipoh, is tough but still manageable.

Seeking treatment in PPUM is similar to other hosp drs. If you are lucky, you are treated by a 'good' dr. The happy part is without having to pay a high price.

Sori to hear about your mother case.

I have shared what I know with my 20 years experienced with PPUM.

If you think you wanna give it a try, be prepared for the inconveniences.

But take into consideration your mother's health before you decide.

If you need to know more, pls update this thread and I will try to assist.

UMSC is private hospital price. Somewhat mentioned already. So dont hope for cheaper.

But i think someone here already guided. So, you got your steps. I believe some hotels are still open. Call and ask or online lo.

But on a more serious note, with covid cases going up, visiting UM, does sound scary.

The quote definite will be higher as no consultation/test were done. They are worried complications happen and more need to be done.

This is to let you know in advance how much money you need to have for the procedure if you decide to proceed.

But I do know they are generally cheaper than other private hospitals as my family members are also seeing the specialists there.

As for facilities, PPUM have almost everything inhouse compared to govt hosp. Some GH only treat certain medical conditions and they refer patients to other GH that specialises in others.

Eg is dental. PPUM have a clinic. Not all GH have dental clinic. You will required to go outside gh govt dental clinic.

PPUM generally a good hosp for the price one pays. Just too bad you are far away.

If you want to make an appointment with a specialist at UMSC, just go to their website and fill in an online form or call them up:

https://umsc.my/take-a-request-appointment/

+603 7841 4000

I think it will be difficult for you to get an appointment to see a specialist at the public wing of the hospital because resources are being diverted to deal with covid-19 cases. One option for you is to take your Mum to UMSC first - you can get an appointment on the next day if there are free slots, and you don't need a referral letter - and for follow up treatments explain your financial situation to the specialist and see if your mum can be transferred to the public wing at UH.

Also bear in mind, when getting treatment at government hospitals, some are designated as national centres for certain disciplines and those will likely be the best places to bring your mum to. For example, Ampang Hosp for haematology, Putrajaya for oncology, and so on.

You can see if they're taking in guests at this place:
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Council+O...3;4d101.6511097

It's just across the road from the hospital

Or this place, which is just a short trot down the road to UMSC:
