what is your model version? My dad old car was W211 E240 Japan Recond, quite reliable back then, sold it after 5-6 years usage with wear & tear services.

meanwhile my bro in law had W211 E270 Diesel, this thing had features as E500, Airmatic ride, sensonic front thingy, massage seat and sunroof. However, last months just spend about 15k+ for engine overhault and gb repair. The airmatic cost him almost 12k last year

Great question, i think its just because job might be easier to replace the whole thing and less room for error.

No 32, has cracks which caused the coolant to mix with the oil

E200K 1.8 UK Import, my dad kinda regretted not getting the 07 when it came out and cheapen out on the 03 (which he overpaid at the time). People usually just swap out the airmatic for a normal suspension hahaha i believe for the S-Class of the same time, people were like "nope not paying 12k for those!"

the sbc thingy, iirc there are few forumers in merz malaysia forum had shop able to repair the sbc pump/ modules. but as it related to brake, i don't suggest to cheapskate on it.

sorry it's M272 engine .. mine had check engine light and did a scan and it will tell you camshaft error or something .. forgot the code already .. but I changed my solenoid coils and manage to drive it for awhile more ..

the symptoms will be some faint chain sounds when you cold start .. it will come occasionally during accelerations too.

This is manufacturer's defect issue and only affected those m272 engines built in 2007 or earlier.

If your friend is eyeing the E230, malaysia only sold it around 2008 and this issue already have been resolved so don't need to worry about it .. generally it's a pretty reliable engine. mine i drove it till 165,000 still silky smooth save for the occasional CEL from the camshafts

Yeah i studied it as well. Price is considering ok now. It last batches of w211 in Malaysia and get the best version of command aps (still cannot compare to nowadays hu which much better).

The e240 2.6 v6 kinda use old tech while this e230 2.5 v6 had vvt both iinm and 201 hp vs 170+ on e240.

So overhaul was done quite awhile ago, changed the brake discs which was rusted as hell. Fail to find the SBC unit to replace and now i have problems with my gearbox, might take another 10k to solve. Currently i've clocked over RM15,000 and have driven for 450KM~

Pictures as requested

i think i assumed the latter, Sometimes now when i drive it would go into neutral or wouldn't shift.  But in the last 2 weeks it has been ok which was more alarming lol

the old car is sometimes stuck at 3rd gear and remains there unless I do the manual gear select at the gearstick. change the ATF after that just minimizes the issues, but I think the problem had been stuck due to the old ATF.

SBC is definitely a good braking system. The only thing is that it has a lifespan. Same as air suspension which you should be thankful that the W211 doesn't have. If not, it'll be another costly repair.

Honestly speaking, I have both German brands and I can say that merc's maintenance cost is slightly higher than BM.

My bro W211 have that airmatic suspension, E270 which have features as same as E500 iinm. 2 years ago, the airmatic gone, so spend about rm12k for recond unit on replacement.

Wow... You really spent a lot on your w211. Why never consider to refurbish your airmatic instead of replacing it?
*
My bro love the car so much. One reason why not going to refurbish is warranty offered. Most refurbished shop only give 1-3 months warranty while he is getting 1 year warranty from the shop he went for it. Well he is already hit 2 years plus now

For your transmission issues, changing the ATF + filter would be a good first step. Changing just the fluid isn't going to be enough. If you can take it to a shop that has more advanced diagnostic equipment (e.g., someone with a Xentry kit) they should be able to read the stored codes in your transmission computer & live data to see if anything's off.

For your SBC issues - are you getting error/warning codes on your dash? You really should go to a shop that can read the exact codes. Some codes may indicate that the unit could be repaired. There's an electric motor that builds up pressure in the system, and the carbon brushes in the motor can wear out. Worn brushes (as long as the rest of the motor are fine) can be replaced. Of course, if the fault relates to an internal sensor, or the accumulator has failed, etc. then you'll need to get a replacement. It's a real bummer that Mercedes didn't extend the warranty for SBC in markets other than the US (the US got a 25-year warranty just for SBC)...

One Mercedes workshop that my dad went last time in Kajang use gb flushing machine. Pricey but it make the gb no issues after long mileage

Whoa...losing brakes sounds terrifying! You might want to keep the car parked until you can get the SBC sorted out...

There are also some companies in the UK that can refurb the SBC unit, but with shipping costs it won't be very cheap. Buying a used SBC unit is also a bit iffy - they have a finite lifecycle, and you won't be able to tell how much life it has left unless you can plug it in and read the data off it. It would suck to buy a used unit and then have it also fail a few months down the road...

I've been wanting something with an M113K, but I'll have to add SBC woes to my list of reasons not to get an CLS/E/SL55  biggrin.gif .

Good luck!
*
U can buy the last batch W211 E Class or facelift version, it does not come with SBC brake. Or take W211 E230 2.5 V6 with 201 hp

It's the M113K engine that interests me smile.gif. Unfortunately most of the cars that came with that engine that are interesting to me come with SBC...
