WTA my laptop randomly freeze 1-2 times per week after upgrade RAM (2GB x 1) to (2GB+4GB). The screen, mouse, usb keyboard, all freeze.. at last only can force shut down by pressing the power button for 5sec.

Action taken to test:
- change back to 2GB x 1 or just install 4GB x 1, still will freeze randomly
- Have RAM, CPU, GPU, Hard drive test no issue.. If all these have problems, shouldn't able to start windows right?

I think RAM type should be no problem? Just diff in term of brand and size

1. Try with temperature monitoring app.

2. Try install the ram on slot A only, if the issue still there, try install on slot B.

RAM what type? Must the same speed/type. Cannot mix.

My old Dell L502X also kept hanging and crashing. Upon inspection, the previous owner installed both 4GB PC3-8500 and 4GB PC3-1333 sticks. I replaced both with PC3-1333 sticks and no more hanging or crashing.

Very high probability the crash is due to the RAM's being incompatible with each other. Change a new pair of the same type.

Hard to say. Some laptops don't like it.

Try taking out the 2GB stick.

Works for me.

8500 vs 10660 big difference if the mobo cannot handle it.

The new ram is installed in a slot which was left unused for long time?
Use the corner of the ram stick (find a spot without any transistor etc) to scrape the ram slot contacts few times.

Then use pencil eraser rub the RAM gold contacts few times so that its all shiny.

Most of the time problem solved by polishing back the oxidised contact shiny shiny.

Yup just a quick cleanup of the contacts. Can also clean up the old ram as well.

Thanks. I have just rub and clean the gold contact, on both old and new RAM. Let's see if the problem still persists before i upgrade to SSD soon thumbsup.gif
