I'm looking for suggestions to replace my 2012 BMW Z4 3.0 (E89) as it's starting to show its age and am tired of driving a manual.

I primarily use the car for leisure trips, the occasional bringing a client out and to do vlogs on various topics.

There's 3 cars I shortlisted but all 3 has its issues and somehow it didn't click the same way when I saw and test drove my E89 the first time.

The cars are :-

2020 BMW Z4 sDrive30i, this was a press car and has absolutely every option possible. Liked most things about it but I didn't care much for the soft top and I didn't like the feel of the 4cyl turbo engine in it as it just lacked that feel that my current E89 delivers.

2015 Mercedes SLK55 AMG. This is a mint condition car. Originally brought in by a Swiss businessman who bought it new in Switzerland then shipped over when he relocated here. Meticulously maintained though it needs a new seal for the roof and new tires. Other than that it is a true buy and drive car. Loved the engine but overall didn't really like it as it lacked the driving dynamics of the E89. Also felt rather cozy in there and somehow it felt like a car that I should have had when I was 10 years younger and finally in a way it does feel like you have one because you can't afford the SL or SLS.

2017 Mercedes SL65 AMG. This car belongs to one of my directors, he purchased it new in California and then shipped it over when he relocated here. Now no longer his favorite car as he recently bought an Aston Martin and therefore letting it go for kinda cheap. It definitely needs some work, new tires, brakes, suspension parts, the turbos probably need a rebuild, think it could do with a top overhaul as well and it is now permanently a coupe because something is wrong with the mechanism that makes it a convertible. I've driven it when it was in better condition and also driven another example of it recently. This car gives me mixed emotions. Isn't really a car to enjoy the drive but more to enjoy the journey. Fun to drive? Yes in its own way but not engaging like the SLK or the Z4 and unlike the SLK that feels a bit nose heavy this one the entire car feels heavy. I like it and many years ago it was my dream to own a SL (R129) but never did. Quite rare to find a SL65 as among the 320mil cars on the road, supposedly there are less than 10 in the country that is a SL65 and certainly none of it are for sale. Also aware that an all new SL will debut either this or next year but it wouldn't be with a V12 engine and I doubt I'd want to put that much money into a new car.

Recommendations?

Cars that I've crossed out? All Porsches, Ferraris and Lamborghinis.

The car I really wanted to own is an Alfa Romeo 8C and a 4C, however none are for sale here and this country no longer allows imports of foreign used cars under 10 years old unless you were its first owner therefore importing one on my own isn't a possibility.

The 2 Mercs mentioned above are LHD cars ? Since those were purchased new in Schweiz and California.
Are you ok driving a LHD car in Mesia ?

I'm curious. Why are you asking for recommendations on a Malaysian forum if you don't live here. The Malaysian car market has a lot of peculiarities that probably aren't the case in your country.

The only new car that is a BMW i could think of is the 2021 Supra. Which essentially is a Z4 Coupe/ hardtop.

Anyway the 2 series coupes are looking very good as an alternative to the Z4.

Else have you ever thought of getting Lexus? Something like RC? Or maybe an LC with higher budget?

Anyway whats the USD budget anyway?

The natural upgrade would be a Porsche.

I want a convertible as all my vlogs are done with the top down.

This is just one of the forums I asked.

Was hoping someone here may have owned either a SLK55 or the SL65.

The Z4 is being sold for the equivalent of US$62,000 the SLK US$68,000 (asking price) and the SL US$95,000 though after asking a Mercedes dealer and specialist on how much is needed to sort it out I might need to ask for a further US$10k off the price as the parts needed is even more expensive than I thought it would be.

Ideally don't want to pay more than US$90,000 for the car especially if it is in a condition that requires work done on it.

All the Porsches I'd like to own are well over the budget.

Its crazy that Porsche prices are slow to depreciate in US. In fact most of the older models are appreciating!!

Too bad Lexus only have 1 convertible for sale now and its new in the LC500.

The Jaguar F Type is nice. But hell... i followed an owner that had the SVR and its reliability is really down the drain.

How about the 430i Convertible?

The price looks about in between your willing to pay max price and
used price. Its a new car even.

After some looking around, kicking tires and more test driving I decided to take on the SL65.

The bad news is the car is mechanically totaled.

A few things died on it since I last saw it. The head gasket blew. What I thought were bad seals and O-rings as well as the dampers going bad turned out to be more serious than that as the ABC pump went with it too.

A local MB dealer quoted the equivalent of US$95,000 on a preliminary estimate basis to rebuild it to factory specification for the engine and suspension as it’s an engine out job. They haven’t come back to me as to how to fix the convertible top as the parts are a factory order.

Trying to look for a more economical way to it.

Never realized MBs are such fragile things these days.
