Updated Dual PhD and Dual Master in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)

Master of Philosophy (Biomedical Engineering-Double Degree) Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Technical University Ilmenau (TUIL) Germany have started an International Double Degree programme in Biomedical Engineering. The student will be awarded with 2 certificates, which are Master in Engineering (Biomedical) from UTM and/or Master in Biomedical Engineering (MSc) from TUIL. The students are required to spend at least 7 months at the partner university. Limited scholarships from German’s government are available for selected students.

Doctor of Philosophy (Biomedical Engineering) – Double Degree Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Technical University Ilmenau (TUIL) Germany have started an International Double Degree programme in Biomedical Engineering. The doctorate double degree programme enables student to be awarded with 2 certificates, which are Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biomedical Engineering from UTM and Doctor in Computer Science and Automation (Dr.-Ing) from Technical University Ilmenau, Germany (TUIL). The students are required to spend at least 9 months at the partner university.

Updated Dual PhD in Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR)

Malaysia’s University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) has been putting great effort into achieving internationalization, as well as maintaining its reputation for students obtaining outstanding academic performances.
UTAR recently announced that it is now jointly offering doctorate programs with National Taiwan University for Malaysian students.

Both universities recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Malaysia at UTAR’s Kampar main campus, setting up this new program. National Taiwan University was represented by the International Cooperation Division, and UTAR was represented by the UTAR Council.

According to Ir. Professor Academician Dato’ Dr. Chuah Hean Teik, the President of UTAR, students undertaking the four-year joint PHD program will have to study in Taiwan for between one and one and a half years. Their thesis will be sent to both universities for examination and students who successfully graduate will be conferred a doctorate degree by both of the universities.

There is currently one student from the Faculty of Science already majoring in this joint program, and UTAR is also planning to jointly offer a master’s degree program with National Chiao Tung University.

Updated Dual PhD and Dual Master in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)

The UPM International Collaborative programme (UPM-ICP) is a programme jointly developed by UPM with several top universities. The main objective is to promote and strengthen bilateral collaboration between UPM and its partners particularly in the areas of research and joint supervision. The programme provides an opportunity for students to study abroad and simultaneously obtain a degree from UPM and the partner university. Cotutelle Doctoral Degree
The programme is one of the programme structures offered by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) under the UPM International Collaborative Programme (UPM-ICP). The programme’s main aim is to promote and strengthen PhD research collaboration between UPM and universities from other countries. Potential candidates must satisfy each university's admission requirements, including language proficiency. A student who is accepted to join the programme will be supervised by at least 2 supervisors, one from each university and will be required to spend part of their study at each university for at least 12 months. An agreement will be made for every student. Upon completion of their programme, the student will be awarded two PhD certificates, one from each university. This programme is open to both inbound and outbound students.

Updated Dual PhD in Management & Science University (MSU)

Double Degree Duo


While some students may be unfamiliar with the Double Degree programmme, a large number of students have chosen to pursue in it. The programme allows you to accomplish two master's degrees in the same amount of time as it takes to finish one. This way you could double your knowledge, your connections, and your potential.

Conquering the double degree programme at both MSU Malaysia and Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) in Ireland are these Jakarta-born siblings Arin Kamila and Sani Salsabil.

Kamila is currently pursuing Bachelor in Accountancy at MSU and Bachelor in Arts of Accounting at AIT simultaneously, as well as additional 4 subjects during her summer break.

Sani on the other hand, shall be graduating with a PhD in Computer Science from MSU and a PhD in Computer Engineering from AIT.

“Online learning can be very exhausting and what I always do is to find motivation and to keep everything in balance. For instance, I will always go for a walk or do whatever I want when things get hard. Having time for yourself and organizing everything can really help you to stabilize life and online learning,” said Kamila on coping with online learning.

Sani, who is currently researching ‘the effect of myocardial infarction in Indonesia’ added, “To be honest, online learning is more challenging than physical learning. As a researcher, it is hard to gain information using an online platform. Sometimes, online learning can be stressful for me. Therefore, I always remember to eat healthily and exercise regularly.”

For those considering the Double Degree programme, Kamila and Sani share some reasons why you should just go for it.

“You could experience various types of culture, environment, education system and method. Meeting new people in another country is always an opportunity to take,” said Kamila.

Emphasizing on job search Sani asserted, “I highly recommend students to do the double degree. Not only gaining new experiences but it also gives advantages to your CV.”

Updated Dual PhD in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)

UKM-UDE Double Degree Ph.D. and Dr.-Ing Program

PromISE is a bi-national and structured doctoral program between the University Duisburg-Essen (UDE) in Germany and the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Malaysia. Doctoral candidates are offered the unique chance to get a double degree as Dr.-Ing. and Ph.D, execute research in an international scientific environment and become familiar with different cultures between the UDE and UKM. This program is designed as a research project for 3 to 4 years, accompanied by course and colloquia.

The research projects shall be interdisciplinary by nature, combining different fields of science, either within faculties of Engineering or bridging to other faculties. All topics shall also combine strength and support both partner universities and societies. All projects will be supervised by two professors, one from each university; research is executed at both universities, following the so-called sandwich scheme. Such arrangements will be retained in a cotutelle agreement.

Supervisors – Supervisor 1 should be from UDE if candidate is currently studying at UDE, while Supervisor 2 should be from UKM. Vice-versa, Supervisor 1 should be from UKM if candidate is currently studying at UKM, while Supervisor 2 should be from UDE.

This program is structured in three stages with an overall duration of 3 – 4 years. It is compulsory to spend at least one year at each partner university, continuously or by several research visits. The stages for the program will be:

Updated Dual PhD and Dual Master in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

USM PENANG, 21 May 2022 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has recently recognised a Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD) student, Wong Yee Jie, as the first student graduating under the USM-Osaka Double Degree Programme.

At USM, Wong is a PhD graduate in Chemical Engineering, while his PhD title at Osaka University (OU) is PhD in Engineering.

His PhD study was about ‘Theoretical and Experimental Study on Dry Reforming of Methane Over Cobalt-Based Catalysts: Insights Into Carbon Dioxide Activation and Carbon Deposition’.

According to Wong, he was responsible for project planning, research execution, identifying and problem solving, reviewing results, data interpretation and validation, monitoring research progress and academic writing.

“I did my experimental study in USM, supervised by Professor Dato’ Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation), where I get to experience hands-on laboratory research on synthesizing catalyst, building up lab scale reactor, in addition to testing and characterising the catalyst”.

“While in Osaka University, I get to experience theoretical computational work in mathematical programming and density functional theory calculations using super computers, focusing on surface catalysis supervised by Professor Yoshitada Morikawa. Besides, I also had the chance to collaborate with Professor Jun Yoshinobu in his laboratory at the Institute for Solid State Physics at University of Tokyo,” said Wong.

He also added that the double degree programme provided him the chance for in-depth study with computational materials design on surface catalysis, as the knowledge and skills are not available in Malaysia.

“The additional value I gained from this programme is that the chance to work in different working environment, different people and to get to learn the working culture of foreigners,” he added.

Wong continued further by saying that the most important thing about studying abroad is not about the knowledge but the cultural understanding gained, which was told by one of the Japanese professors.

“The most valuable thing you can learn from being abroad is by experiencing how foreign people work, which it is important in knowing how to communicate and blend in with them,” said Wong who is currently working at S&P Global.

Wong was among the 399 PhD graduands who received their scroll from the USM Pro-Chancellor, Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Zulkefli A. Hassan in the second session of the USM 59th Convocation ceremony held here at the Dewan Tuanku Syed Putra (DTSP) this morning.
