Hi there.

I'm about to place an order for the Mazda CX5 2.5 Turbo soon. Unfortunately, gotta give up my hot hatch for something more practical and spacious as I recently "upgraded" to become a father.

Would like to know if there are any drawbacks to this particular variant? Any reliability issues when it comes to the turbo? And what are some good things about it?

Due to the MCO (again), I won't be able to test drive the car at the showrooms. So my experience with it is as much as I've gotten from watching reviews on YouTube. My wife currently drives a Mazda 3 so I'm already quite familiar with the brand, and to be honest, would've loved to have a CX5 with the updated interior (like the CX30 and the new M3) but I can't wait anymore, as my wife's SA said a new CX5 will likely only come end of 2022, plus it might take years for the new CX5 to be equipped with a turbo engine.

So yeah, any thoughts on the 2.5T variant? I'm going to book this purely out of blind faith. I was actually considering the X70 as well but I think despite all the bells and whistles that the Proton offers, it's probably still not as refined as the CX5. Was also looking at the VW Tiguan Allspace R Line, but the safety features are sorely lacking and it's also more expensive. Another option would be a demo unit XC40, but the interior is a little too small for my liking plus I heard the maintenance is gonna bleed me in the future.

Thanks for the input guys!

Just get it without sacrificing your hot hatch 😬😬😬 but seriously, it’s a great car. Handling is great with more than enough power output from the TC-ed engine. You won’t regret it.

Should be the best SUV to buy at that price range. Other SUVs would not be able to keep up with it.

Agree, if want fuel economy with power the diesel 2.2D should be the better choice.

Will you consider the VW Passat Elegance? The 2.0T EA888 engine packs sufficient punch, it's spacious and comfortable too, even though not as practical as the CX-5's taller cargo area. And it can be had pre-reg from as low as 145k.

One downside I can think of for the CX-5 2.5T is definitely the fuel consumption. Purely city drive may give you a consumption of 12-14l per 100km.

Should be quite an impressive ride.

My wife opted for the 2.5 non turbo spec and so far it's been good.

Performance is generally reasonable and power is there when needed. The 2.5 High seems quite decent. So if you have the means to get the Turbo variant, just go for it bro.

Recon nx200t/nx300 or recon harrier 2.0T? Reliability is not an issue for both brand. Size wise Harrier 2.0T wins while nx is more or less similar to cx5. Unless of course u prefer new.

Cx5 - side mirror and battery common issue not too sure if 2.5T is facing similar issue. Power is great for 2.5T.
Tiguan - Major service is freaking expensive unless u service outside, parts are above average cost wise, power so so.
XC40 - Volvo are not know for reliability unfortunately, parts are above average cost wise.

A Mazda spacious ? You gotta be joking right ?
Their cars and SUVs are made for dwarves... doh.gif

I go in their model, always langgar knee and head.

The GF always wanted a CX-5, but never test drove, and even wanted to order one on blind faith.
So i brought her to test drive the various SUVs available.

She doesn't need the handling or a 2.5T power, so finally settled on the X70, plus it's way cheaper.

I'm not gonna give up my hot hatch... lol... but i do have another D-segment sedan for the space to bring the old folks around.

i bought x70 as well and bro in law cx5 2.0 high line. things that i jealous with cx5, android auto/ apple car play, a better fc considering it is less power and NA and free service. things that he jealous of mine are bigger rear legroom, Nappa brown leather, turbo engine, and much cheaper price.

and same as u, I still had my 5th year's old accord to drive for kampung drive if required more space, especially the boot space and rear legroom

better the 2.2d, many tested 2.5t coming from 2.2d and found the 2.5T lacklustre due to detuning for local fuel quality , 2.2d not detune since euro5 diesel as standard

I have a 2.5 CX-8 and a 2.0 CX-5.

I will suggest you to go have a look at recon XU 60 Harrier, especially the facelifted one with the 2.0 Turbo engine, the same engine on the Lexus NX, and plenty of stock for you to choose from. My discussion below is based on the facelifted 2.0T

Why ?

CX 5 is not spacious enough, ride quality is not that "Premium" the NVH is really subpar if compare with CX-8 and the price it cost you. On the harrier the rear seat have 5 or was it 4 level of incline adjustability which is Maseli Ben S class territory, and if i am not wrong the only 200k+- car to be able to do this, and also quite a large rear boot. And also black roof lining, and a large slab or leather on the door panel, dashboard, again which add Atas/Premium value to the money you spend, and also Lexus style sweeping signal on the front headlamp.

And being a Toyota durability is not be a problem, part wise too as there is quite a large number of harrier running in Malaysia.

And you get a true CBU car, which is also a con as the menu is in Japanese.

But you lose out on Carplay / Andrioid Auto if that is your thing.

Test drove a few unit and was very impress. Basically it is a higher quality XV60 Camry but in SUV form. Ride comfortable, good NVH, the turbo engine is more then powderful enough for city commute. And you get one giant slab of panoramic roof. Go for the one with the big JBL headunit as they are the top spec Harrier.

Long story short nearly get a Harrier myself before the waifu intervene for another Mazda. Oh well.......
