okay, i am here to confess, my chinchilla had died today at 1.30pm i managed to rush home from work after receiving distress call from my mom. he was a cute little guy that i thought would bring joy to the family but it did not, it bring more pain then joy all i can say because my mom is still crying now. my dad had passed away this year which is unreal so i thought of keeping my mom busy by having a chinchilla. we had 2 dogs before, both shih tzu and one died last year at the age of 13 and the other was 4years old which is still with us.
lets get on, i am the cruel one who caused my chin to die, improper lack of education and no experience. i tot that keeping a chin is as easy as keeping a dog, well, just aircond, hay water and pellets, no treats, fulfil their basic requirements thats it. its not, i dont know what causes my chin to have diarrhea, but i suspect too much alfalfa maybe i might be wrong. ive bought alfalfa and timothy hay plus kaytee pellets since we brought him home, but i notice he does not touch the timothy hay, only to realize that because the timothy is "1st CUT" when he had the diarrhea problem, that means all the time he was only eating alfalfa hay 100% and and the pellets which consist of alfalfa as well.
thanks mr chinchilla for rectifying the problem for me, but i guess it was a little too late, he definitely loves the orchard grass and timothy that i bought from oxbow, his droppings are getting harder but hes having weightloss still, i went to work this morning and he was okay still, still eating and running around, until my mom woke up and saw him lying on his side, gasping for breath. which is just a short 3hrs after i went to work, i was so shocked when my mom called me. i rushed home only to see that he is fighting for his breath and on his sides, he tried to move but he cant, then after 10mins of difficulty he made a sound, and then he moved but a minute later he died. no more breath.
i will definitely never get a chinchilla for now, unless i know what i am doing, and if only i know there is a vet for me to go incase of emergency. i still couldnt believe it, just a month plus after bringing him back from ikano, he was timid that time and hiding wouldnt let us touch, but for the last two weeks he was so nice us, he always come near to the door of his cage when we walk near to his cage, letting us massage his neck, feed him with hay. and i have not let him out of the cage ever since he had diarrhea , which was for a week. so i did not notice how bad his weight loss was. it was another big mistake. i will post up some pictures of my cute little boy by this week. well, pls share your comments and post here if u know any vets that could treat chinchillas. surely will help others. jjoy to see a new chinchilla being introduced to the world but sad to see it fall under the wrong hands.
Sorry for your lose. It may be the diarrea that cos dead, but it may not, could be respitory infection or a cold virus etc. Your enviroment hygiene play a big part.
I would like to point out one thing as I have said many times in earlier post when people want to buy chin from IKANO or places that is selling chin at the pet shop at any time. I am breeder, I certainly can judge the size, the age and the health of a chinchilla by see the a real chinchilla in front of me, as I mention those chinchilla available in the market is TOO YOUNG, is less then a month old or less then 40 days. Is too young to be sell due to the immune system and the stress level they cant take. If they selling something a bit older, that will be very safe for new owner to purchase. Diarrea is very very common happen on chinchilla, and is very easy to treat with simple care, but it will bring to fatal become serious. Chinchilla is very very good in hiding sickness due to avoid begin a prey in the wild, it can be that on the pet shop he already sick but just hide it.
I believe you have feed it right on the diet, I am feeding my young chins EVERYDAY with alfalfa 80% + timothy 20%, they grow healthy like no body business. They even can take alfalfa every day even when they are older with no problem, but some chin I bough before can't even take a tiny pinch of alfalfa at all, but it can be improve the healthy digestive system with right care, now they eat alfalfa with no problem every day with small amount. Please dont follow my example feeding them everyday, cos i know my chins and what they need, how much and when to withdraw, i just want to share this to said that alfalfa is not a killing plant, but need to use it wisely with care it will bring excellence result.
