i asked my contractor to do 7 inch coring for kitchen hood ducting, end up he leave a gap of 5 inch from the ceiling then + 7 inch coring,

so my plaster ceiling have to be 14inch which is out from my plan to keep the plaster ceiling height at 10 inch.

why did he leave a 5 inch from the ceiling? due to machine the contractor used or for safety ?

my contractor didn't explain much, he just said it was done according to coring expert advice.

Could be due to the load bearing beam

Should not core an RC wall, but presumably he did it due to beam location.

If not load bearing technically no issue..my management office say i can even drill a watermelon sized hole in non structural wall.

Is your contractor armed w all the drawing/plan for ur unit? If there is no beam in the location ie all brickwall it makes no diff.

If not an RC wall then coring at any level should be fine. Usually the hole will be at least 1 feet above the level of the cooker hood. Then you can cover with your hanging cabinets; extended to full height.

I need to core 2 6-inch holes on the balcony wall for fresh air system ducting. It took the project team 3 weeks to reply in a letter that there’s a beam there hence coring isn’t allowed. At least 3/4 of the wall is sliding doors so I’m assuming it’s not load bearing. I wonder if I can core lower to avoid the beam and how much lower usually. I’ve sent a follow up enquiry which might take another 3 weeks to hear back.

How do you intend to counter technical specs and want to take risk ?

No that’s not my intention. I understand the beam can’t be cored. Can’t we core below it (the non-beam wall)?

Each building is constructed differently. How to advise you other than the project team.

Have you managed to install the fresh air system ducting?
