Hey guys, I hope this is the correct subforum to ask this.

So I have a free webpage created through Wix. My current goal is to get a proper webpage address for it so that it looks more professional. So I am looking for ways to achieve that with the lowest cost. tongue.gif

Based on what I read online, I will need to purchase a web domain and subscribe to a web host.

First off, regarding the purchase of the web domain, does it matter where I purchase it from? Cause different web hosting website seems to offer different price for the same webpage address that I want. So I'm sure there must be some relevance.

Secondly, finding the web host domain. Since I already have the free webpage on Wix, subscribing through Wix is straight forward but the price seems to be a lot more expensive. The cheapest package is USD 4.50 per month. On the other hand, web host like hostinger has a package with price around RM 8 per month. Jimat hosting seems to have a budget hosting package with RM 30 yearly, which looks super cheap to me.

As someone who is not from the IT field, I really am clueless with all the technical terms that are being thrown around. For example, MySQL, SSL, subdomains, wordpress, etc. Therefore, I would really appreciate any advice at all regarding this.

On a related note, if I find an alternative web host from Wix, I believe I will need to build a whole new website? Since the Wix one can't be used anymore... I am not confident I can build it on my own. So I guess I will need to hire a freelance web designer to help with that (added cost). On top that, I am also concerned about future editing. If I need to change some text in the website in the future, will I need to hire web designer each time I want to edit something on the website? In the current free Wix website, I can make changes through Wix.

I am so lost since I have zero IT knowledge. I will welcome any advice you guys can give.

Thanks a lot. notworthy.gif

Wix is expensive, I also noted that USD4.50/mo just to connect a custom domain to it.

Why not try Google Sites (sites.google.com) and build one using drag-and-drop style (instead of writing code yourself or pay for web dev. service), then simply buy a domain name from Google itself (.com maybe for RM 50++) and connect to your Google Sites .

Google Sites - FREE
Connect custom domain to Google Sites -FREE
You pay for your Domain - RM 50++ annually. (That's it)

EDIT: Attempt to answer a few of your questions:

MySQL is database to store your blog article, images, catagory, tags, etc.
SSL is something like your HTTPS:// instead of HTTP:// (more secured, but means you need to pay more)

QUOTE
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer and, in short, it's the standard technology for keeping an internet connection secure

Subdomains are just subfolder of your domain name. dragontongue88.playground.com, fliermate.playground.com, in this case, dragontongue88 and fliermate are subdomain, not just www.playground.com only.

Wordpress is a readily-made CMS software that helps users create, manage, and modify content on a website without the need for specialized technical knowledge. E.g. Blog / Portfolio / Resume ,etc

QUOTE
Wordpress is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) written in PHP and paired with a MySQL

Normally in web hosting, you will find Linux and Windows hosting. Windows is more for ASP.NET web app, while Linux is more for PHP web app. (If I am wrong, someone please help to correct me.)

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation. I understand a bit better now. notworthy.gif I will check out Google sites. If it is drag-and-drop I should be able to do it. That price point is very attractive too.

Thanks again!

Hi,
Different websites show different prices for website domain and hosting. You can compare the prices on different websites and purchase the cheapest one. I found Hostinger cheaper than GoDaddy and also along with website hosting, Hostinger will provide you with Wordpress website themes and custom Email ID.
Let me explain some technical terms
Free Wix websites provide subdomains like abc.wixsites.com and wixsites.com is a domain.
Wordpress is a website builder tool where you can find pre-made website themes catering your business needs.
Also, you can hire website development services if you are not sure how to go with this by yourself. They can also guide you to suitable solutions for your website.

Domain name is actually quite cheap depending where you are buying from. Namecheap is only 10 usd for a year compared to company who maybe is a reseller (buy from companyn like namecheap and sell to you, like middle person)
I personally dont recommend getting your domain name and webhosting from a same provider. After your contract ends with the provider, or thing turned sour, at least domain name control is still under you.
Webhosting companies will always offer you 'best price' package to first signup. After the contract ends they will hike up the price a lot that you either have to pay or go through the hassle of moving your webhosting. What i did is sign up for the longest time package and once contract ends i search for new webhosting provider. Though there s a chance that your current webhosting provider will make a lot of trouble for you to move the files over to new provider.
