Is this a common thing in Malaysia? Because in the last 3-5 years I was working, I came across and met some old friends who are in their mid-20s to mid-30s. But their parents still control them. Whatever salary they earn, parents take 80%, the remainder 20% they keep themselves. Or when they go out, either their parents have to follow (or ask a sibling to follow). They are not allowed to have phones. Even if they have phones their parents will keep, and the kids themselves can only check the phones every 2-3 days.

Can something like this be so common in Malaysia?

well, many asian adults are still controlled by their parents in a way. if you notice, at adulthood, we still have to listen to our parents demands.

but controlling salary and social life... i rarely heard controlled by parents anymore except for spouses. the only friend i heard about this was a friend many years ago...

But to an extent of having the parents take their phones (2-3 siblings share 1 phone), if they work, their parents take quite a big chunk of their salaries, etc. Even the car, for example, the parents may buy 1 car and ask the 3 siblings to share. Can't have boyfriend and girlfriend, and can only be chosen by parents (read: arranged marriage lah). It's that kind of life. If you text or call them the parents will be the first people to read/hear from you first. If they don't like what you send them, they will delete the text message and not really tell their kids. Some of my friends are like that... The only time when I get to talk to them is on Sundays in person after church. Even then their parents are in close proximity so that they can hear whatever you are saying to your friend.

Bit much, don't you think? lol

that's indeed not a life. but what are ur friends doing then? to us outsiders, it's very something wrong. and if they are already adults, i believe they would have at least strength to change their circumstances. they can choose to say 'no'. unless there is more to the eye can see....
