I’ve done a simple experiment to track my car via AirTag today.
Just sent my honda car to a SC to replace the leaking drive shaft boot last 2 days ago. Picked up just today.
Before sending my car, i put my airTag at the back area, inside the compartment where you have all the tyre jack & stuff. Hid it quite well so that people won’t be able to find it.
I did an improvision of putting my airTag inside a Watson’s round shape tooth floss plastic casing. It fits well surprisingly. Had to cut off the small roll cyclinder inside to properly accomodate the airtag.
Sent the car and went back to my home.
Did monitor via Find My app. So far so good. It did pinpointed exactly where my car is. Before it was parked near the guest area. Then after few hours, i discovered it was parked inside the workshop.
Today i went to pick my car at SC. Went together with my wife on another Honda car.
So we went back with two cars now, with my wife on that car. We went a different route and eventually meet up a local gas station before continuing our journey back home.
But then things get a bit off with the airTag.
LimitationAirtag didn’t gave the EXACT location of where the car is as quickly as possible.
In other words, airTag SUCKED in giving REAL TIME tracking. I tried checking via Find My app, and the car is still showing up at a roundabout we passed through earlier. I waited and it finally UPDATED the location for almost 28 minutes LATER.
I DID NOT TURN ON Lost Mode because if i do that, then “the thief” would be alerted to its presence if he has an iphone as well right?
HypothesisI guess AirTag is not based on real time GPS TRACKING and only based on Bluetooth & Ultra Wide Band (UWB) where this technology is quite limited.
My wife is using iPhone as well with the latest iOS 14.7 version. And here i thought, my wife’s iphone would constantly broadcasting the signal to give out the location in real time.
So if we have MULTIPLE iphones or i Devices surrounding the airTag, then better signal would be emitted & thus real time location update would be improved?
ConclusionAirTag is still a very good device to keep track of your items but don’t expect it to give constant, quick real time location update.
Perhaps other sifus can share your findings here as well.
