Yes, buy one and throw inside your car. No installation and installing stupid app are needed.

Is this even possible?

Because typical GPS remote sensing device require at least 2G signal like using your old dumbphone and transmit data.

So does this airTag work with similar concept?

If so, instant buy for me! thumbup.gif

AirTags do not have GPS, it uses crowd iPhone GPS via bluetooth to locate its location.

AirTags also uses UWB for precocious location.

Ultra Wide Bandwidth? Effective range is up to 25 meters only.

So let say if my car is stolen and it’s 5km away, still this airTag wouldn’t be able to track my car last location? hmm.gif

I think this airTag is more like locating nearby items only

Switch mentioned that it is due to Sirim requirements, only single pack will be available

What kind of requirements?

I prefer 4 in a pack as it is cheaper than buying single tag x 4 doh.gif

Just ordered 1 airtag via switch online. Rm129.

Wanted to test out this on various occasions (put inside car, stuff, etc) before buying more airtags for future usage.

I’ve done a simple experiment to track my car via AirTag today.

Just sent my honda car to a SC to replace the leaking drive shaft boot last 2 days ago. Picked up just today.
Before sending my car, i put my airTag at the back area, inside the compartment where you have all the tyre jack & stuff. Hid it quite well so that people won’t be able to find it.

I did an improvision of putting my airTag inside a Watson’s round shape tooth floss plastic casing. It fits well surprisingly. Had to cut off the small roll cyclinder inside to properly accomodate the airtag.

Sent the car and went back to my home.
Did monitor via Find My app. So far so good. It did pinpointed exactly where my car is. Before it was parked near the guest area. Then after few hours, i discovered it was parked inside the workshop.

Today i went to pick my car at SC. Went together with my wife on another Honda car.
So we went back with two cars now, with my wife on that car. We went a different route and eventually meet up a local gas station before continuing our journey back home.

But then things get a bit off with the airTag.

Limitation
Airtag didn’t gave the EXACT location of where the car is as quickly as possible.
In other words, airTag SUCKED in giving REAL TIME tracking. I tried checking via Find My app, and the car is still showing up at a roundabout we passed through earlier. I waited and it finally UPDATED the location for almost 28 minutes LATER. doh.gif
I DID NOT TURN ON Lost Mode because if i do that, then “the thief” would be alerted to its presence if he has an iphone as well right? hmm.gif

Hypothesis
I guess AirTag is not based on real time GPS TRACKING and only based on Bluetooth & Ultra Wide Band (UWB) where this technology is quite limited.
My wife is using iPhone as well with the latest iOS 14.7 version. And here i thought, my wife’s iphone would constantly broadcasting the signal to give out the location in real time.
So if we have MULTIPLE iphones or i Devices surrounding the airTag, then better signal would be emitted & thus real time location update would be improved? hmm.gif

Conclusion
AirTag is still a very good device to keep track of your items but don’t expect it to give constant, quick real time location update.

Perhaps other sifus can share your findings here as well. notworthy.gif

I did 3 tests so far. 2 which I posted here:
https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...ost&p=101057375
https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...ost&p=101227826

All tests were done with no iDevice in the car. I wanted to test how good is local Find My network. AirTag was in my bag. My car has CarPlay but I don't think it participates in Find My. In any case, there was no iPhone for CarPlay to connect to.

I think I was most impressed with it sending out an update while I was cruising along on NPE (3:33pm update in the 1st test.) Also this was during MCO so not many cars/people around. 2nd test was late and in the outskirts so an even more quiet time.

Yours is giving a fast update might be due to you are living in klang valley, which almost 90% people are using iPhones ya?

Me in the northern region especially in Kedah, not so many people using iphones. Mostly androids. That might be one of the reason why my airTag is giving very slowww tracking update even in the bustling town.

Great experiment by the way. thumbsup.gif

Hope others would give their feedbacks as well. Thanks.
