not sure if im the unlucky one this year.

so the email content is:

- requesting me to email back a xxxx, yyyy year documents/receipts/EA forms
- requesting me to submit a photocopy of my parent's ICs
- it also asks for my mobile number (i thought LHDN will not ask for this?)
- there is no due date, the exact reply was "Tindakan segera di perlukan"
- email is definitely from @hasil.gov.my, but just wondering if lately got any spoof attempt to make it look legit?
- it is sent from a staff email, not like the official noreply@hasil.gov.my, etc

edit: oh yes, forgot to mention, the email title is my income tax account number, the title is legit just "SG xxxxxxxxxxxx"
without any other information. lol

but is it legit?

i thought they only send physical letter?

going to call to verify on Monday but thinking there's no harm to hear some input here before i do nod.gif

Check the original email and see if there is this line:

Received: from seg-a2.hasil.gov.my (mx.hasil.gov.my. [113.11.236.135])

Suggest you print out the thing and then go to LHDN office to verify.

I've received this once, from an official letter delivered to my house.

Wow, if documents, receipts are too numerous to scan, especially for business people. Perhaps arrange for them to come to the premise.

Are you working or a businessman?

Second this. Email looks legit but still I wouldn't scan and email it to them. Better go to their office and check the status. Print the email or just show it on your phone.

thinking to do that.

because i thought if kena audit, they should be sending a letter instead?

yea im going to call on Monday. because this is the first time i see a staff directly email to me asking for info.

it would've been believable until i saw that there is no due date mentioned, and they asked for my number.

also a bit of grammartical error in bahasa

like gaya hidup is written as "gayahidup"
dates not consistent, some are written as 01/01/2020, some are written as 1/01/2020. lol.
and signature got different "quotation" font.

so not sure if these are red flags. but will verify on Monday.

Did you max out some portions in the claim? Usually they call for audit when this is done.

The official LHDN email inbox has laughingly small size. I think 1 or 2 only, can't remember the exact size. So even if you scan, you can't sent by email.

Yah, TS need to call LHDN first. If it's confirmed, then can proceed with registered mail of required documents. Make it formal and have adequate proof that TS already do his / her parts as requested.

CP38 - I got one a few years back. They did send me a physical mail and I purposely ignore. Not contesting / disputing their recalculation. Walla... salary deduction for 6 months. sweat.gif My boss dispute their recalculation, and lost. Was slapped with higher due. RM14k that need to be paid within 14 days. whistling.gif Originally it was less than RM10k.

A tax audit will most likely lead to a higher revised tax. Many tax payers think lhdn are govt employees and dont do their job.

Many under declared income and over claimed reliefs. A quick check on the pcb against income declared will reveal whether is a correct tax declaration ... dont even have to go into details yet. Once it shows suspicion, the file will be called out and 'love' letter sent out.

Better to visit them and have all documents acknowledge receipt.

Provide a copy of parent IC
Provide contact number
No due date

Seems red flags to me

Normally for desktop audit or full audit, LHDN will issue the request using thier LHDN letterhead.

If me, i would call to LHDN to check and confirm

They did not request her phone number, but i did recall last few months LHDN officer called my handphone number just to verify did i receive CP500 from them.

Most of the time the officer will provide a direct line under their email, or at least a official letter in the attachment.

Could be a scam. I don't see why lhdn wants photocopies of your parents' I.C. and not just their I.C. nos. I don't see why they even want their I.C. at all. If you have claimed medical expenses for your parents they will just ask for the receipts.

If the email is legit, there is always an officer and phone no. to call to get extra clarification. LHDN will also give a definite date to comply with their request. Asking for photocopies of parents' IC is also strange. Could be a scammer trying to target your parents. Did you fill in your mobile no. in your tax form? If you have, lhdn has no reason to ask for it again.

just checked my pdf receipt. i didnt put in my phone number there.

but might be a scam since its not a complete data submitted. thats why they want my number. lol

cuz the fact that they want my number alone is weird enough.

if really want to audit, should be asking for all the details either make appt to pass on the receipts/docs, or send by email.

have to call tomorrow to verify.

Some siblings claim 100%. Should be, eg 5 siblings each just claim 20%. That’s why need parents ic.

To save me all the trouble,( dunno what my siblings would fill ... ) i nvr claim. This year I x even claim internet bills. How much savings is that? Nah, I derma utk membangunkan negara! cool2.gif

Just make another copy/set of whatever you're submitting, especially a covering letter, for yourself.

Bring everything to LHDN, go to the kaunter saringan/front counter/the counter that give the queue numbers, and tell them you want to submit said document. They'll definitely go through them to see if they can take it from you or they send you someplace else to submit in person.

If they take your stuff there and then, ask them to cop terima/acknowledge receipt your set of documents can already.

Quick question guys,

Do you think it's fine to explain I've lost some receipts towards the counter staff?

Or wait for the staff who handles my case to call me then explain I've lost it?

Just realised i lost some so... im prepared to pay the penalty nod.gif

In my case, I received a letter from LHDN to submit supporting docs and receipts for parents medical claims relief, medical insurance and EPF, as well as gaya hidup relief. There was an email address in the letter, so I scanned all docs/receipts and emailed to the officer.
It was not mentioned in the letter that the required paperwork needs to be submitted in hardcopy, in person to the LHDN office where the letter originated from.

UPDATE 12/4:

so i just called, the staff picked up and said its legit

i proceeded to ask why is there no official letter, the staff said sama saja hantar email

then ok, i proceeded to say i will go to the office branch to submit, is it okay

the staff said can also.

so i guess its legit. nod.gif

Better to email the supporting copy and send the photostat copy via hand/courier (registered post), in case they said didn't receive.

no because we're supposed to keep all receipt for LHDN purpose for 7 years

it's already list and reminded us long time ago, and probably every year during our income tax submission

one of the reason why i rather forego the rm1k (or is it rm2k now) of claim under books/reading material...as usually i misplace receipts for frequent purchase.
*
yea i think next year onwards i will choose pay more than claim more.

even if i did buy the item and its claimable.

dont want the hassle. since we can never run away from random tax audits for the rest of our working lives..

hmm you are right.

actually was thinking if i really need to go to the branch to submit hard copy.

as the staff did verify its a legit email.

should i just explain that i lost the receipt in the email? or explain in person is better over the counter?

yea but im just wondering how much penalty i will kena this time sweat.gif

hope its not over 1k-1.5k

my tax range 14% only for 2020 and 8% for 2019.

thanks to the pay jump.

do you have any idea how the penalty works?

lets say you claim RM520, but no receipt

do they charge 520 + total taxable income that year (assuming 14% max at 2800) * 10-40%?

means (520 + 2800 + 300 fine) * 40%?

not sure how it works.

also will they be lenient to first time offenders with ciput salary? sweat.gif

Yes you can ..... the officer just add back tbe amount to the taxable income and new revised tax imposef plus penallty.

It is the most common reason by a tax payer under audit.

Normally, a tax payer will oredi know himself why his tax file is call out for an audit.

Is better to see the officer personally. It shows your seriousness is sorting out whatever issues.

You can try to plea for his kind consideration not to impose too high penalty if is some 'mistakes'. Show a sad face ... you might have a considerate officer to handle your case....lol. Not all tax audit officer are penalty face type if you can explain.

Email is ok too but to them, is just another 'tax evader' file ...not much consideration...I would say. He would just imposed the max and wait for you to show up to appeal.

Why do you want to see the officer? Just submit the documents requested and if they are in order she will issue a letter saying you have complied with their request. At this stage there is no need to see the officer.

Do you aware what is the triggering point for your audit ? i.e claim where shouldn't in the first place

If you purchase via Credit card; do they accept if receipt is lost?

There may be no triggering point for an audit. Sometimes they select at random. But generally I find that most of those who are audited have claimed relief under lifestyle.

not sure how they calculate..but if i remember, it should be the amount you try to claim x 4-8 times.

so if its RM520 x 4 times, then around RM2k....

but not sure got change or not..i remembered reading the penalty like 5-6yrs back..then decided fck it! not worth to claim..and didnt submit claim since unless i have the receipt kept somewhere secure (and i remember where it was).
*
Don't cause fear la. I don't think it is as high as 4-8 times. Or they may just add back the disallowed expenses and recalculate the tax if it was just a misunderstanding and not an attempt to cheat. Speaking from experience.

The penalty according to the act is between 100% - 200%.

but if u can prove your mistake is genuine, in good faith and agree with the issue raised by IRB u can always ask for reduction in penalty to a minimum of 45%.

so assuming your tax rate max is 14% and and u cannot provide proof of claim for RM 520.

the max penalty is RM 520*14%*2 = RM 145.60

the min penalty u can try to ask RM 520*14%*1.45 = RM 105.56

Aside from the penalty , the problem when u get selected for audit is they tend to do full audit not only for that year but also for the last 5-6 years of tax submission.

super late reply

education = offer letter by uni / college or existing student id card

insurance = insurance annual statement for tax relief purpose

lifestyle = receipt under your name
