BURSA MALAYSIA AIMS TO ENGAGE WITH YOUNG INVESTORS THROUGH NEW RETAIL PROGRAMME

Up to RM500,000 to be won in Bursa Pursuit virtual stock challenge

Bursa Malaysia today launched a retail programme aimed to expose, engage and educate the young generation on looking at the stock market as an investment option. This four-month long campaign is the first phase of the exchange's long-term commitment to familiarise and engage the younger target segment into identifying opportunities for investment or career in the capital market. The programme is targeted to the investing population age group of 20 to 29 years of age.

Bursa Malaysia Berhad Chief Executive Officer, Dato' Yusli Mohamed Yusoff said, "There is a strong need for us to engage new retail investors into our capital market. Our ultimate aim is to persuade the younger segment to consider the stock market as a natural investment option."

The retail programme covers a two-pronged approach. The first aims to reach out to the young and create awareness through a hip and innovative advertising campaign entitled 'What If...". The latter focuses on the message of what investors can potentially miss out on should they not consider the stock market as an investment opportunity. The second approach will utilise an online investment challenge game called Bursa Pursuit as a medium to engage and educate.

Bursa Pursuit is a virtual stock challenge with real-life trading experience, minus the actual monetary risk. This exciting stock game features educational elements such as trading tools and analyst reports and most importantly, engages participants in the actual analyzing, buying, selling and monitoring aspects of stock trading.

Dato' Yusli added, "We believe that it is imperative to educate young investors to adopt informed investment strategies. Early exposure in trading will hopefully instill in our young the interest in finding out more ways to tap into investment opportunities available in the capital market. We hope that through Bursa Pursuit, participants can look forward to a new learning experience as they are exposed to the basics of stocks and trading."

Bursa Pursuit, which will run from 1 October 2007 to 30 November 2007, will give participants the opportunity to win prizes valued up to RM500,000. This online game opens with a virtual capital of RM250,000 and is open to participants above the age of 18 years. Those interested to participate can register online and the official registration period is 7 September 2007 till 23 November 2007. Bursa Pursuit will consist of 3 leagues: the main league for any individuals above 18 years of age; sub-league with a minimum of 5 players and maximum of 15 players; and a pro-league for individuals licensed by the Securities Commission. Weekly prizes worth RM2,000 each will be given to top 5 performers from the main league. A grand prize of RM100,000 will be awarded to the player/team with the highest virtual earnings from each league at the end of the game. Bursa Malaysia will also run roadshows at campuses and public spots within the Klang Valley to encourage sign-ups.

The retail programme which was launched in Maison in Kuala Lumpur saw local celebrities such as Serena C, Melissa Indot, Arafah Edruce, Moots of Pop Shuvit, DJ Blink, DJ Fuzz as well as Hitz FM DJs Hunny and Junior, showing support and signing up to participate in Bursa Pursuit's Celebrity League.

Yes you can participate in both individual and league category at the same time.

The league competition is based on average performance of the league members. Should go for quality instead of quantity.

Quoted from the official website

QUOTE
Think you and your friends can make the best average for that RM100,000* prize. Create a league and invite them in.
Leagues win and lose together. The game averages out the league's portfolio value to find the league's market value. You need a minimum of 5 people to qualify for league prizes. You can create and join as many leagues as you want

if you won the money, the only open a CDS account la.. they will deposit the $ into that account. But you have to make sure all your registered info is correct at first place.

Take it as a challenge la.... if you can win the game, some fund management companies might hire you as a fund manager... your future could be much brighter than that RM 100k prize money...

One needs to apply for a license to be a fund manager in Msia. But fund manager assistant doesn't need to be fully qualified. If a fund house were to hire you, you will probably start with a fund manager assistant position and they will sponsor you to get your license.

It's funny why they make the initial capital RM 250k, but not a round figure like RM 100k or RM 1 mil.

If you trade warrants instead of the mother shares, you would've gained that much too.

QUOTE(lukeboone @ Oct 3 2007, 05:02 PM)
i'm trying to even start learinign with the mother stocks, but it seems i am going no where without any1 mentoring me on the basics. i hav tried to read some of the guides and techniques but still fail la. Basically i was gambling for the pass 2 days. managed to get some income on mas shares yesterday but today i had to sold spsetia and i bought guthrie quite late.

a few questions i wanna ask,

1. i understand that i hav to be comfortable with the sector/industry of the shares i buy. And i would need to read alot of news and company backgroup and history of the company, i believe this is called fundamentals right ? but the question is, wat factors actually is included to actually decide on if a share is worth investing.

2. how do u even study technical analysis?  or wat ever it is....  rclxub.gif  this is usually used for short term investment right ? and fundamentals are on the long term?

3. how to decide on the optimum amount of lots to buy given the share price and taxes involved ?

4. i thought brokerage fees is about 0.42% how come in the bursa pursuit java cal it's 0.72% and how does this numbers come from ?

5. how come that some companies announce some good news, and the share doesn't really go up? for instance IJM, i read in the business section of the star, it says it's launching a new project soon and the shares should go up. how does it affect and why ? which lead to my next question.

6. what affects a share price to go up/down? as in techncally. the more ppl buy, the higher it will go ? vice-versa?

7. the whole big objective is to buy low and sell high, and how will we know that it's a low/high time ? or to smartly predict that the shares will go up?

8. i noticed i am starting to be a stock freak by sitting infront of the pc and monitor all the stocks, am i suppose to do tat if i was really investing ? or i hav a choice to buy/sell each time during lunch hours and after market close ?

9. i believe alot of oung adults like me like to play very short term shares (buy/sell within 3 days), many brokers and exp investors actually advice agaisnt this investment method. is it only for the experience to play this kind of game or generally this method dun really work?

10. i'm going to get the book titled "stock investment for dummies" this coming weekend, i browse through it last sunday and it was quite easy to read and understand. is there similar books out there that are better or whihc u guys would like to recommend? even e-books or websites would be good. esspecially those that have good examples/illustrations.

i actually hav lots more of questions i wanna shoot after 2 days of playing and manange to rugi about 3k.

wise man of KLSE ! shoot your enlightment rays on me !!!

I'm actually willing to buy u guys a drink or 2 juz to come out and share some advice or educate me more on this subject. but i doubt any of u might actually go tat far.

1. Not really correct. News and background of a company are just very small part of it. For the formal definition of FA, refer to http://www.investopedia.com/university/fun...ndanalysis1.asp.

You will need some finance + accounting background to do the analysis. The most important factor that determines a stock price is earnings aka profits. Not just past earnings or present earnings... but on how people predict future earnings of the company.

2. TA is study of the stock market via charts. TA vs FA...... Feel free to google it. Personally I believe it doesn't matter what method you use (you can use both if you wish), as long as you could consistently make money with the method.

3. The present rule is 0.4% or min of RM 12. So RM 12 / 0.4% = RM 3k. Thats the minimum amount.

4. It's set by brokerage firm. There will be some changes for next year fee as well (due to budget 2008).

5. Some companies already got heavy rumors before the announcement. Before the official announcement, the price somewhat already reflected the effect already.

6. Supply and Demand

7. You can't tell. Nobody can tell. Perhaps for a company stock price, the insiders could be able to predict better.... but insider trading is illegal FYI.

8. Sure you can. You can do the research at night and place order on the next day morning / lunch break. Queue your orders. That's what I do with the game also.

9. Nothing is guaranteed work in stock market. If you discover a method that can work 80% of the times, you can already making big bucks. There are people who do that.

10. If you are into FA. I can recommend you one to start with - The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. Warren Buffet learned from him, he added some twist to the basics and eventually became the one of the greatest investors of all time.

I formed a small league for my friends and investors, people with various backgrounds, none of us are pros in stock market yet, just a few CFA/CFP/MBA students all learning together. If you like to learn more, drop me a pm, and I give you an invitation.

<<i believe those who predict are usually the company and the parties involved. however this prediction does not come very often right ? and if so, wat else is to determine worthiness of investing ? >>

There are 2 ways to look at it, top down approach and bottom up approach. Top down approach is more on macro term, where you look at the big economic picture, select the fastest growing sector, then pick the best stocks from that particular sector. Bottom up approach is more on micro side, you look at a firm first, then only progress to the industry/sector. There's no right or wrong with investment, just wise or not wise.

<<fair enough. wat are the advantages of both methods? of cos i can google it but it will give me all sorts of text book answers. >>
Well, practically TA is more suitable for traders, and FA is more on investors side. Regardless of which method you plan to use, you should do enough research before market open or placing your order. From what I observe is those who enter with solely TA usually cut loss very fast when anything goes wrong. That's why the are in front of comp. screen all the time.
Brokerage firms make a lot of money because of these traders around. Each time you buy/sell, they make money from you. It doesn't matter whether they win/lose, they still have to pay the brokerage fee.

Check out this ratio
Portfolio turnover ratio (aka PTR) = (Amount you buy + Amount you sell) / Your Total Portfolio Capital
TA followers generally have higher PTR, and FA people have lower.

<<so how do we make sound judgements to enter or exit on a particular stock ? >>
By applying FA and/or TA ?

<<thanks for the tip! will look into it this weekend.>>
I posted a few more books. If you are interested, check it out.
